it's a BIG store (more like a 3 story warehouse) stacked high with 'antique' or high-end flea market finds. go with a goal - otherwise you may get overwhelmed - but if you know what you want you're likely to find it for much less $ than you'd pay anywhere else (except the Fremont flea market which is also great). for example, we found a good looking, sturdy, unique (and i don't mean weird - it's cool looking) coffee table for not much. it was the first store we visited and there it was - just what we wanted. a must for antique store and flea market fans, and those tired of places like ikea.

I finally broke down and decided Gap jeans just weren't doing it for me. They're fine, yes, and reasonably priced but just slightly on the dowdy side. So on a recommendation I went to Lucky in UVillage and plunked down $80ish for jeans. And you know what, so worth it! I went back and bought 2 more pairs - one in brown, one in dark denim. They're comfortable but still stylish without looking like they belong exclusively on 14 year olds. At this point I wouldn't buy anything else.

H&I is a family-owned auto-body business near Seattle U. They fixed the dent in my car and did a bang-up job. I hate hassles, and getting the estimate was easy, they did an excellent job, my car was ready on-time, they were super nice and the final bill was exactly the same as the estimate. I'd go back to them anytime.

I'm a car neglecter (I admit it) and my '95 Jetta is a beater that i more-or-less ignore (which i get away with because it usually runs great). but when it started to have little nagging problems i asked my mother-in-law where to go and she recommended eurocar. they were exactly what i was hoping for. when i called the people were nice, we arranged a time for me to come in, they did a thorough check and fixed most everything in a day for a reasonable price. like a good doctor, what they couldn't fix (and were puzzled by) they were honest about and talked me through what they'd tried, what they could try and what each additional bit of work would cost. the whole experience was easy and now my car runs better (if not perfectly) and i feel like i got good value for money. next time i have a problem (or need routine maintenance) i'm going back to eurocar.

I found Rochelle 2 months before my wedding by asking a stranger with a cute short haircut, "who cuts your hair?" I've been going to Rochelle ever since. Best, most consistent haircuts of my life. My highest accolade is that now, strangers stop ME in the street to ask who cuts my hair. The answer: run, don't walk, to Rochelle at Salon Joseph. P.S. if you don't live on Queen Anne, go anyway. It's worth the trip.

When I read reviews of this collection of essays - written by a former Washington Post and Vanity Fair writer and edited posthumously by her husband - I was concerned that the fact that she died of cancer - and wrote about living with it - would be too much for me to take. That it would be heavy and treacly and schmaltzy full of woe and false heroics. But I'm here to say, it's not. It's wonderful.
Williams' essays - most of which have nothing to do with cancer - are delightful. Her character studies of people like Barbara Bush and Vernon Jordan are enhanced by a unique voice that is witty and insightful and real - like the smart but sassy friend who tells you like it is - tough stuff but with a heavy dose of good humor. I also loved the essays about parenting - a lot of words have been written about "modern parenting" - but this is somehow fresh.
The last third of the book about her cancer diagnosis and treatment is a highlight. Not at all schmaltzy - no manipulation of the heart strings here. It's sad, but in a terribly look-it-in-the-face honest way that's somehow readable, not devastating. They're perhaps the best essays I've read about sickness and facing death, in part because they're not meant to shock and devastate, but to tell what it's like for a person who's living it day to day. It was her reality, and she was very much alive when she wrote it.

i found this to be a great history lesson and also wonderful if you're a bit of a frustrated/former english major type. it's a moving and very readable memoir - a bit wander-y at times - but offers fascinating insights into what it was like to be in Tehran at that time in history. the part that gets all the publicity - her secret book group - is a nice vehicle, but no more than that. i highly recommend this book.

The Big House is set on the cape amid an old-money (but no money left) Boston family with a beautiful old house. It is very well written and is filled with a sense of place, nostaligia, love of family, self-doubt and offers a glimpse into the world of the true WASP. If you've ever been curious about this social universe, or have a big family with an old house, give it a try. It will give you a window on an interesting by-gone world worth knowing.

A great american novel - and you don't have to like comic books

First, get over the issue with comic books. You just don't have to care about them to enjoy this book. Sure it's set in 1930s/40s NYC and the main characters are comic book artists. But K&C so much more than that. A "great american novel" in the classic sense, Kavalier and Clay is an epic tale with big themes, among them the power of the individual to make and/or destroy himself (and the power of love to do the same). Incredibly well written and inventive, with vivid characters and a fast pace that keeps the pages turning, this may be great literature. It's definitely a great read. (Yes, I gave it a 5 - when something is really good, why hedge?)

Empire Falls is a character study and portrait of small town life that's engaging and, despite what could have been a cliched portrayal, original. You'll find yourself caring about the characters and turning the pages to find out what happens next. Plus it's very well written and quirky. that's my idea of a good read.
