i'm a working mom and impatient by nature so when i have to get something done, i want it done right, but also done quickly. recently my 11 month-old son needed his first pair of walking shoes. so off we went to shoe zoo on blakely behind uvillage. it was easy to get to, there was parking out front, when i walked in someone helped me (us) immediately and set us up with parker's first pair of walking shoes. it took like 3 minutes, and yet i felt like they took care to get the size right, lay out our options, help us compare etc. etc. it was thorough AND fast! and for those sleep deprived caffeine addicts out there, the new zoka is across the street. i love it.
fyi, the only alternative i know about is nordies - but it's soooo much more difficult to drag a baby downtown. don't do it unless you just want to go to nordies for your own nefarious purposes (not that there's anything wrong with that).

yesterday i visited jgilbert and it reminded me of why it is my go-to place for beautiful shoes. i visited nordstrom earlier and found nothing - every shoe was a very high heel or super pointy or fashion victimy in some other respect. besides the place was a madhouse. so i went to jgilbert on first (cattycorner from patagonia) and found the perfect pair in 5 minutes. granted, they're expensive and you can't return them. but the shoes are carefully selected and beautiful. they don't follow the usual trends but they have style. the person who helped me (thank you shannon moon) was lovely. also, i bought boots there several years ago (also expensive and unreturnable) but now i wear them every day. if you look at cost per wear, they're a bargain. i say, fewer better things. if you feel the same way, go to jgilbert.

I'm a junkie. Of Peet's. Coffee is nice, but Peet's coffee is habit forming. Maybe it's because I used to live in the bay area. Maybe it's because I like to walk to Fremont or around Greenlake and it's a destination. Maybe it's because the coffee is so strong. But Peet's can't be beat. Try to sour cream coffee cake too - usually the pastries at coffee places taste like cardboard but this coffee cake is worth going out of your way for. Very moist with a delicious cinnamon-sugar topping. Yummy.

As all the reviews say, Portage Bay Cafe is great but often crowded. If you're waiting with a tiny tot in tow, be sure to ask to sit in the extra room. There's a spill-over room (attached to the hotel next door) where they send people when the restaurant is full - but it's also perfect for groups with kids. It's not atmospheric but it's uncrowded and the kind of place where a toddler can roam free (not possible in the rest of the restaurant). Now it's our go-to place when we meet friends with kids for brunch.

Kids on 45th is a consignment store on - you guessed it - 45th in Wallingford. I am such a fan of consignment - the clothes are abundant and cheap (like $2 for a pair of pants or a shirt) and the brands are often very good (Gap, Hanna Anderson, Gymboree). My son is happy as a clam in his hand-me-downs-from-strangers. Even better are the toys and books. Just yesterday I got a great board book and a Richard Scary for like, practically nothing. Run don't walk. The downside? It can be a little disorganized and crowded, but for what you get, who cares?

I have been looking for a primary physician and a trusted specialist I visit regularly recommended Dr. Linda Clark of the Wallingford branch of Seattle Primary Physicians. I recently met her at a "meet and greet" and she was great. I'm definitely signing up to be her regular patient based on that meeting - and that's after shopping around, talking to several people/doctors and meeting a few.
Dr. Clark has great credentials - UCSF med school, UW residency plus she's personable, direct, and good for those who like the data behind the decisions. Over time I've realized I like doctors who are both good communicators and "science-y" in the sense they can cite studies and be specific about WHY they're making certain recommendations by citing data. Finding both qualities in one person is not easy. But I think I've found it with Dr. Clark. Plus she has hours after work and on Saturdays. Check her out.

frenchy's isn't the cheapest probably (although i don't think it's much more) and it probably isn't the fastest in and out. but the general atmosphere and high quality mani/pedis makes frenchy's my favorite place.
the atmosphere is quite madison park, but if you're not into that, don't be put off. for one hour, it's nice! think: well groomed ladies, plush couches and every fashion magazine on earth - it makes you feel pampered. plus the manicurists are very nice and they do good work. sometimes they'll give you free makeup application (so you'll buy, but they don't pressure you).
check out the other reviews for frenchy's in judy's book. it's a popular choice.

If you're looking for (or even open to trying) prenatal yoga, i highly recommend 8Limbs. I just had a baby a month ago and I attended prenatal yoga up until a week or two before my due date. The studios (both on pike and 35th ) are among the best in town and Annefife, the teacher of my class on pike, is an absolutely amazing instructor.
I'm not a 'yoga person' per se so i don't usually go for the 'sharing' aspect of yoga, but i found this class very satisfying physically and also supportive emotionally. physically, it is gentle enough to be appropriate for even someone 40 weeks pregnant, but challenging enough to feel like a workout. plus late in my pregnancy it showed me i could move in ways i didn't think possible at 7, 8, or 9 months. emotionally, i found the 10 minutes or so each week the class spent sharing tips on pregnancy maladies or birth stories surprisingly helpful. i learned a lot about the wide range birth experiences - something that helped me get a sense for what to expect.
so even if you're not into yoga, try it!

it's a BIG store (more like a 3 story warehouse) stacked high with 'antique' or high-end flea market finds. go with a goal - otherwise you may get overwhelmed - but if you know what you want you're likely to find it for much less $ than you'd pay anywhere else (except the Fremont flea market which is also great). for example, we found a good looking, sturdy, unique (and i don't mean weird - it's cool looking) coffee table for not much. it was the first store we visited and there it was - just what we wanted. a must for antique store and flea market fans, and those tired of places like ikea.
