Ahhh, I'm glad I went there! 12/8/2011

I don't understand?! This is the best Cafe I have ever been to, why some bad reviews! Best coffee, best all around staff, and multi-seating style arrangments...I like the couch or outside lounge chairs as weather permits! Students have takin over at times but besides, cozy best and that's that! Just go and check out their coffee sourcing and how much they care and deliver that to you, and the food's great too. I am a Chef (Top 100 in America Dining Establishments 2x by 24yrs.old) almost 30 yrs. experience, and Organic eater now so very fussy. Believe me when I say very good and my FAV. and I am hard to deal with. Godspeed, Chef Drago. Enjoy! more

Victrola Used to be Better 5/31/2006

I used to be one of those people who annoyed the owners by bringing a laptop to use the wifi which they used to have on all the time and haven't gone nearly as much when they started to curtail it. There seemed to be potential for good conversation; I met some interesting folks although I also spent a lot of time zoned out on the internet. But it was in some ways too much of a good thing, and the place has become so crowded that I often go in, and then go right back out because there are no available seats. They have done a lot for their part of Capitol Hill with their events http://www.victrolacoffee.com/events.html because they provide something inexpensive and worthwhile that appeals to a lot of people. more

If you've never been to a pretentious coffee house...then Victrola is a must 5/27/2006

So i really enjoy good coffee and I was first drawn to Victrola because I had read about this new espresso machine company, Synesso, based in seattle and Victrola was one of the first cafes to install Synesso's 'uber' espresso machines (www.synesso.com/) my first experience was so-so....yes the coffee was great...but it was more the experience that I just didn't jive with. The cashier and barista seemed a bit pretentious and rude......and it took a good 5 minutes to get my espresso....yes there were 5-6 people in front of me....but it seemed very odd indeed. but i figured i'd give it another try and i've been back 4-5 times, but it's always the same experience......which is unfortunate as the coffee is great......but there are lots of great coffee shops and roasters in seattle.....that offer a much better experience. on one instance i was ordering a sandwich and the cashier/barista had a pissed off attitude that they had to grill the sandwich.....and then when he delivered it......it was the wrong one.....so he was even more pissed........at what i have no idea, but it's unfortunate that i've had this same type of experience on several occasions. So, if i'm on 15th and have 15 min to kill...i might hit Victrola or head down to Ladro (which usually has very nice baristas and great coffee as well)......or I find myself many times willing to walk on down to 19th and hit FUEL which is about as non-pretentious as you can get and has great coffee. but if you're in the mood for some pretentiousness...then you know exactly where to head. andiamo! more

Everything a Seattle coffeehouse should be 5/17/2006

Victrola has all the necessary components for an ideal coffeehouse experience: Great coffee drinks, a dark corner with sofas, a piano, sunny sidewalk seating, organic juices, rotating art exhibits on the walls, a bulletin board crammed with local postings, as well as a large crowd of dedicated patrons. It's not part of a chain, and it's pure uncorrupted Capitol Hill coffeehouse culture. more

Fave coffee destination 12/1/2005

I drive all the way from the eastside to have "real" coffee and Victrola is one of my top picks. Their baristas are artisans and are not the usual coffee snobs that are so prevelant in superb coffeehouses scattered througout the Emerald City. There seems to be a problem w/ wifi, but I am just there to savor and sip the lattes: always the right temperature, not too bitter, not too frothy. The art work on the walls as well as the many colorful patrons give this coffee joint the Seattle vibe that a lowly suburbanite like me craves. My only beef is with the lack of parking. more

best coffeehouse on the hill 10/22/2005

this is the best place to spend a sunday afternoon!! local artists' artwork adorn all of the walls, the staff are extra friendly and make you feel like you're at home! whether you are alone, with friends, having a meeting, or just hanging out with your sweetheart, this is such a comfortable spot. there is plenty of outdoor seating in the sunshine! coffee is delicious, yummy pastries too! more

cozy spot 9/21/2005

This was my one of my favorite places to "study" in college and I stopped going because it got so packed. The no wi-fi rules doesn't bother me so much, but i can see how it would be annoying. I think really their motivation behind that was web surfers/laptop workers would take up space/tables/chairs and not buy as much for the time they spent there, so with no wi-fi they have more traffic going in and out. I've never been that impressed with the staff; the service is just OK, but I don't go for the service anyway. The coffee is GREAT and it's a great place to meet up with friends for a chat. Lovely art on display. more

Coffee and forced conversation 9/12/2005

I've been to Victrola a few times and their coffee is pretty good. The tables, etc. aren't particularly comfortable and the light is not great for reading. They used to have free wifi all the time but apparently they have decided that people should talk not work at coffee shops and have turned their wifi off most of the time. As someone who likes working in coffee shops now and then, I find this incredibly annoying and I won't be going back. more

Best Baristas 9/9/2005

Sure, the beans they use here are great and the pastry selection is generally good, but what really makes it are the baristas, which are very well trained in the art of making good espresso. It tends to get a little crowded on the weekends and evenings, but if you don't want to sit down, you'll be fine. more

Best Thing Around 8/17/2005

Everyone in the cafe has laptops on using free wireless service, yet it's still somehow a pick-up place for hipsters, or at least a place to feel stared at as you wait for your coffee. The art is above most coffee house art and the atmosphere is pleasant enough, better than any other house in the area. The lunch fare is not so great, usually looked anemic and/or day old. The pastries are plump and satisfactory. more

Another good coffee shop 8/16/2005

In Seattle, we have more coffee shops than we can handle. So, how do they manage to stay in business? Whatever the answer is, Victrola has it. It seems to be one of the better known and more popular espresso joints. It has always been a hopping place for the student or twenty-something singleton looking to meet like minded people. The coffee drinks are well done, they have a nice selection of rotating art, and it is perfectly located in people watching central. However, the recent decision to cancel wi fi on the weekends seems to have hurt business. I used to have to fight to get a table on the weekends, now I have my choice of many prime seats. So, if I don't need to go online, I can always swing by Victrola. more

Best Coffee in Seattle 8/16/2005

It is a pretty bold claim to make that someplace has the best coffee in Seattle, but this place will live up to those words. I live across town and will drive out of my way to get a cup of joe here. I prefer to drink drip coffee, but most places in Seattle specialize in espresso drinks...needless to say the quality of their drip suffers. This place makes great drip and espresso drinks and offers a good variety of pastries and sandwiches, to round out a good breakfast or light lunch. There is also some nice art, from local artists, which rotates weekly. more

Good coffee house to spend an evening (avoid weekends) 6/13/2005

Victola is a good coffee shop in Seattle. They have a nice relaxed atmosphere, great coffees and assorted hot drinks and they usually have free wifi. Their space is large with plenty of tables (although it does fill up from time to time), and has just the right level of background buzz. I've found that I can happily camp out at Victrola for a few hours in the evening, and easily pull out my laptop or read a book. They frequently bring in local jazz and blugrass bands, which all add to the environment. I would love to see them expand their food offering beyond a few scattered baked goods. They do offer panini sandwiches, but there are only 4 types, and they are usually out of at least 2 of them. Update: I originally had rated Victrola with 5 stars, but after discovering that they turn off their wi-fi on weekends, I have to lower my rating. I also found this out the hard way. I was working on a few things when they turned off their wi-fi. I lost a whole bunch of work. I assumed that there was an error, but when I asked the staff to check on it , they told me they had intentionally turned it off. more
