I've wanted to try the food at Tilth for months - ever since I started reading about it. I've only heard good things from friends who have eaten there, but I was very disappointed. My boyfriend and I decided to try it last Sunday for my birthday brunch. I figured if there is any day I won't feel guilty spending $12 on scrambled eggs (or having my boyfriend spend $12 on scrambled eggs) it's my birthday. So we went...
The service was some of the worst I've ever experienced - there were only about four tables seated the entire time we were there, and yet, the server disappeared for TWENTY minutes before taking our order. Even then, the order was wrong (!) - I ordered the truffled scrambled eggs, he brought a two egg breakfast with sausage (huh?). He apologized and put my correct order in, only to bring it out wrong again (!!!) - this time it was just the toast (wheat instead of white), but he had literally asked me what kind of toast I wanted four times. We also ordered the $8 bloody marys, which were almost undrinkable. They make their own tomato juice with no salt or something, and they didn't seem to use any other flavorings (or vodka, that I could tell). I had to spoon salt into it (nope, no salt at all!) just to drink it. The woman who made them asked how they were and I said (trying to be nice) that they could have used some salt, to which she replied "yeah, we lost our salt thing". What does that mean? Why were they still making them?
The food, itself, was fine, but terribly overpriced. My boyfriend got the salmon hash, which was good, but not spectacular, and I got the truffled scrambled eggs (good, but smallish portion and not worth $12).
I just don't know what was going on that morning. Another table had to flag the waiter down to get a coffee refill - AND had to point out the coffee pot to him when he couldn't seem to find it. Very strange.

The Bodies exhibit is displaying the bodies of dead Chinese prisoners sold by the Chinese government. These aren't people who willed their bodies to science. I, personally, find it pretty sad that they've done this to people who had no say in how their bodies would be "flayed" and displayed in death.

I've had quite a few piercings over the years, but the worst experience by far was getting my earlobes pierced at the mall when I was 7. Long story short - I passed out after the first one and made the women do the other one anyway a few hours later. They were never quite right and I took them out a few years later. No piercings scare me like my earlobes (yes, that's right - I've had nose, tongue, nipples, etc. which were all fine but the thought of piercing my earlobes makes me shake). Anyway, I decided it was finally time to get them re-pierced. Unfortunately, my previous piercers were unavailable so I went in search of a new one and found David at Slave to the Needle. He was great and very patient. I explained the whole thing to him and he didn't make me feel uncomfortable at all. He helped me select the right jewelry and did the whole process with the by-the-book cleanliness you should expect of any reputable piercer.
My previous earrings were not quite even so I had him even them up and now they are practically perfect. ;) If you're looking for a piercer, give David a try - he's great. Especially if you are a big wuss like me.

My boyfriend and I went to Crow for the first time a couple of weeks ago. It was a bit on the late side and we got right in with no problems. I was surprised at the limited menu (I think there were only 6 or so entrée options). I had the chicken wrapped with prosciutto, which was nice (crispy skin, not dry, etc.) and my boyfriend got the cassulet, which was way too salty. Generally I stay away from restaurants with such limited menus unless I am pretty sure I'll love anything I order there - this is not one of those places. The space itself is a bit weird - high ceilings and the far wall looks like someone may have started painting and never finished or something. The women's bathroom is also quite strange.

I'd heard great things about Dilettante and finally went for dessert last weekend. My boyfriend got the flourless mocha cake and I got their special sundae with their special vanilla ice cream. Frankly I have no idea how anyone can eat this stuff. The ice cream tasted like Mylanta - chalky and inedible. The cake smelled and tasted like cheese (and I love cheese, but this shouldn't have tasted like that). I will never return. Truly horrible.

Vashon Community Care Center is an adult assisted living facility (they also provide day programs and skilled nursing/rehabilitation) on Vashon Island. I have visited the facility twice and have been impressed each time. Each resident gets an apartment that is very nice and can participate in a bunch of activities. Their dining room is also nice with good healthy food. I loved the setting - it's so peaceful there and they have nice raised gardens (so you don't have to get down on hands and knees or hunch over to garden) that residents can help tend. Very nice.

My boyfriend has worn coke bottle glasses for pretty much his whole life and always hated it. Last year he decided to get Laser Eye surgery and say goodbye to glasses forever. He and I researched doctors in the Seattle area (and Canada) and found Sound Eye & Laser. They are in the Swedish Medical Center building on capitol hill and are very good at what they do. He met with them for a consultation and was deemed a good candidate for the surgery. He went in EARLY on a Saturday morning, had an exam and then the surgery took only about 15 minutes. They re-checked his vision right after and it was already 20/20. They sent him home with an aftercare bag and dark glasses. There are follow-up appointments (1 week, 1 month, 2 month, 6 month, etc.) where they check the healing, etc. All in all this was a totally positive experience and he is very happy with his 20/20 or better results! Please carefully consider that if you have the surgery you should be close enough to be able to get there for the follow-up visits and any aftercare in case something happens. These are your eyes, don't take chances with them.

Oliver's is a little hotel bar on the corner of 4th and Olive (right by Westlake and across from the Bon). It's fairly comfortable and not very smoky. They are known for their martinis - they seem to win championships all the time. They are good, but not my favorite. What I do love here, though are the gilded Manhattans (gold dust and booze-soaked dried cherries in a Manhattan - what's not to love?) and their coffee drinks. Yum. They also have free happy hour appys and a limited menu for other food. Oh, and the peanuts are addictive.

The Portage Bay cafe is in an odd place - basically you better keep your eyes open because if you miss it, you're heading over the University bridge. They have a small parking lot with free parking and there is lots of street parking around the area. It's also a short walk from the UW campus. Lunches are great - mostly sandwiches and salads. Brunch is legendary - if you get anything with pancakes you get a trip to the "breakfast bar" to load up on fruit, fresh whipped cream, etc. to top your breakfast. So good.

The baguette box is a nifty little place on capitol hill that serves a whole bunch of really tasty sandwiches. Most of them are hot sandwiches with fillings like stew, lamb, spicy chicken, etc. Very good. They also make really excellent fries, although they are quite expensive. The place is tiny and it's sometimes difficult to get a seat to eat there (but you do want to eat there...the sandwich won't be as hot and the bread won't be as crisp if you take out). Just be patient.
