i hate this place 12/22/2005

ok, yes it has a HUGE selection. and they're pretty low-priced--but only some of it and no more so than walmart or long's. but it's always super-crowded and there is NO customer service. i don't expect neiman-marcus white glove treatment, after all, it's just a grocery store. but waiting in line 15 minutes to pay for one item while their are obviously employees who could open up checkout lines is ridiculous. i used to go on occasion before that incident, but i haven't been back since. plus, parking is a bear! more

My Favorite Grocery Store 10/5/2005

I find myself going to Daiei 2-3 times a week for whatever reason. Everytime I go in there, I always end up throwing a whole bunch for stuff in my shopping cart. They really have a lot of good sales on makeup, toiletries and asian/japanese foods. Like Liz wrote, a new Walmart did open up by Daiei but I think they attract different clients. In fact, a new korean structure was built right next to it and I thought it might take some of their business away. But everytime I go to Daiei, it's always packed and the lines are super long (oh yeh, that is one of their down falls). Long lines and not enough staff. I still love it though! more

Large Store 9/6/2005

I like this store because it is conveniently located by my house. It is about 4 blocks away, within walking distance. This store is similar to Walmart except that it sells a lot of Asian foods and it has an Asian deli that sells bentos and other types of fresh Asian foods. The service is fast and the prices are competitive. more

Great department store 8/21/2005

The Daiei is a grocery and department store located in Honolulu. They also have locations in Pearl City and Kailua. Amazingly, they manage to squeeze quite a bit in the store, ranging from groceries to auto care. Prices tend to be slightly higher than the big-box retailers, but if you watch for their weekly green ad in the Sunday paper, you can grab a deal. more

Good place to shop for asain foods 8/20/2005

Daiei is a good place to find a lot of Japanese foods and products. I usually go there to buy a lot of ingredients for when I’m making Japanese food dishes. And they frequently have a lot of new imported items from Japan available. Their fish and seafood usually tend to be a bit cheaper than the other local grocery stores. more

Daiei-Kaheka, great asian food selection 8/20/2005

This department store is like a Hawaiian version of K-mart. Lots of different types of stuff which include your everyday household goods, and grocery goods, clothing, car care products, electronics... In addition to all of the above, the Hawaii stuff includes Hawaii branded casual wear as well as a ton of Asian foods including nori, senbei, rice crackers etc. They have a variety of take-out food options at the stores front. A flower shop is also conveniently located at the entry. Parking in front is very small so you may need to park across the street. more

If Wal-Mart was Japanese this would be it 8/18/2005

This store has everything: clothing, groceries, electronics, personal care, pharmacy, ready-to-eat foods (hot and cold), etc etc. It's pretty much a one-stop shop, and you can even grab a meal at their various food vendors located outside connected to the store. They have an extensive Japanese/Oriental food section and even a good selection of Japanese household items in addition to the normal American products--often times they are even cheaper than that membership Japanese store that starts with an "M". Their meat department has the best selection and best looking cuts of Canadian Blackline pork on the island. Despite being open 24hrs it always seems busy but parking is ample as long as you are willing to park across the street and upstairs if necessary. more

Grocery and General Store 8/7/2005

Inside the store you can usually find what you need. There are electronics, convenience items, clothing apparel, magazines, toys, school supplies, and food. It features a great assortment of Asian foods. Fish and meat can be bought there as well. They also have ready to go items like mochi, sushi, and plate lunches. A great place to meet everyday needs. more

Large Asian Grocery and General Store 8/6/2005

We always shop here for lunch or for Asian products because they have a lot of Asian products that you can't find at other stores. I really like their bentos which are very delicious for lunch and I also buy a lot of their freeze dried saimin bowls. I always look for their freeze dried (just add water) rice and meat meals which are quite good. Sometimes I buy donuts and other last minute items I need in their grocery and bakery departments. more
