XO Seafood Restaurant on Kapiolani across from the Convention Center has gotten some pretty good reviews, but I never got to actually try them until yesterday. It was pretty slow for lunch, but that meant really nice, relaxed service (but not too slow). And the food was great--the soup of the day was a pork barley soup that was surprisingly good (I'm not always a huge fan of soups)--savory with just a hint of sweetness and not greasy at all. We had the lunch specials, which are reasonably priced and include the soup, rice, tea, side veggie and your entree. I should've asked in the beginning, but didn't think to until we were done, but the owner said their specialties were pork osso buco, three cheese shrimp and a unique sounding kind of curry (I can't remember exactly what it was). He said the specialties are the ones on the picture menu, not the the typed one. I can't wait to go back and try them!

The view is great, but that's about it. The service is mediocre, as is the food. Do NOT get any of the salads, they all suck. I made that mistake once and then forgot to warn my husband the next time we went back and he ordered one while I was in the restroom. Of course, he regretted it. They do have a good chocolate oozing cake dessert, though. But it's all definitely overpriced. Go elsewhere.

La Taqueria De Ramiro is a little Mexican place that just opened up on Fort Street Mall by HPU in the past year. I've been dying to try it for the longest time and it was soooooo good! I ordered the super taco with carne asada and even though it looks a little on the small side, I had a hard time finishing it--and I'm pregnant! I also ordered the side of chips and guacamole, which was homemade. I'm definitely going back!

d.k. steakhouse is next door to sansei in the waikiki beach marriott. we went because our friends claimed it was better than ruth's chris. of course, that was a challenge we had to take on. and, to belatedly celebrate father's day. so we ordered the appetizer sampler platter and signature 22 oz bone-in ribeye complete meal.
first of all, definitely split this steak. it is HUMONGOUS. i felt like it was half a cow. obviously, it's not, but it IS a lot of meat. everything was delicious...the appetizers, the potatoes and veggies...everything. the dry-aged nature of the steak does lend it a slightly different taste. kind of like beef jerky, but not dry and chewy. like moist and tender beef jerky. that doesn't sound very good, but it tastes a LOT better than it sounds. medium rare is the way to go, i think medium would be too dry.
anyway, it's ALMOST as good as ruth's chris, but i think i like the standard regular beef better, drowning in butter. but also, i ordered the filet mignon there, which is usually like the mercedes of steak (i'd call the ribeye something like the cadillac of steak), so that might also be part of it. but morton's i hated. they burn their steaks on the outside (though they call it "searing"), so that every bite is full of burnt taste. you even smell the burnt smell when you walk in. and it might even be more expensive than ruth's chris. so there you have it...you gotta try d.k. at least once, even if it's only b/c you tried to make the early bird special at sansei and got kicked out when it was full. :)
i gave it 4 stars because it is on the pricey side...i'd give it 5 if it was $15-25 in range instead of $25-$40.

The HIlton Waikoloa is a huge complex (62 acres), with a tram and a boat-carrying canal that traverse back and forth from one end of the resor to the other. There are 3 pools with waterfalls and slides and a swimming/snorkeling lagoon, 9 restaurants and a spa. They have dolphins and flamingos on display and, of course, acres and acres of breathtaking views. You literally never have to leave, if you don't want (and of course, since you're in the middle of nowhere, it might just be easier not to).
Of course, you're gonna pay through the nose for all these amenities. The kamaaina rates are great for those who are Hawaii residents, otherwise cash in those Hilton Hhonors points. Try to eat outside of the resort because all the restaurants are overpriced and just mediocre. Get a fridge (if you ask nicely, sometimes they'll give it to you for free) and save your leftovers for lunches and go to the store in Waikoloa Village (10 mins. drive) for breakfast munchies. Eat at Cafe Pesto in Kawaiahae, try the Beach Grill at the Waikoloa Beach Resort for lunch (it's too pricey for dinner and the desserts are awesome), Rainbow Cafe in Hawi, the Coffee Shack in Captain Cook and, if you're really desperate, Costco & Little Caesar's in the Kmart in Kailua-Kona.

The Kamuela Provision Company at the Hilton Waikoloa is a good steakhouse. Like all the other restaurants at the Hilton, you're paying for the views. But if you get outdoor seating near sunset, this is about as romantic as you can get. The food is good, but not great.

Donatoni's at Hilton Waikoloa is reminiscent of the Blue Bayou at Disneyland, set right on the waters of the canal, so that diners can look out on the boat riders at they pass by and vice versa. Of course, the view past the boats to the crystal blue waters of the Pacific far surpass Disney's view, but you get the idea of how it feels. You'll pay about $30 an entree for mediocre Italian food, excellent service and a phenomenal view. If you don't mind paying for an elegant environment, this is the place for you. But if you want incredible Italian food, this is not the place.

This is a branch of the infamous Merriman's in Waimea. I guesss that would explain the limited selection on the menu. For some reason, nothing really seemed to appeal--the pastas all sounded run of the mill (I expected more from Merriman's) and what was left was overpriced. I ended up getting the appetizer sampler and that definitely ended up being the way to go, especially since I had filled up on bread and olive oil because the service was so inanely slow. But the olive oil was the best I've had in a long time, the hummus was fresh and my husband said his basic pasta was good. And the waitress was kind enough to bring us a little sample of the ice creams before we ordered dessert.
