rad cut sans haughty attitude 4/4/2008

lacey is great! i saw a couple of reviews (below) detailing her expertise so i booked an appointment. not only does my hair look superb but the attitude i retardedly assumed would prevail at a salon like this was nowhere to be found. i couldn't be happier! Pros: great cut, no attitude more

Uneven haircuts 3/4/2008

I went to this salon around three weeks ago as it had really great reviews on Citysearch. I don't know whether i went on a bad day or i got a bad stylist but the cut was just awful. I asked for a fringe and for around three inches from my hair. To be fair, i didnt explain very well what i wanted but that was because the stylist took no time to discuss it with me and before i knew it my hair was chopped way too short. I do not mind this however, because it is hair, it grows, i am not bothered. What does bother me however, is the bad quality of the cut. Even my friends have noticed my hair is totally uneven, one side has nice layers in at the front and the other side is just cut totally blunt. It looks stupid. The final insult came when the stylist said, 'Oh you said you wanted a fringe well you are British, thats the wrong word for it.' ... what??? Surely, he should have taken time to discuss the cut with me if he thought I didnt understand what I was asking for? Unfortunatley, as an intern only here for a year, i have little money to correct the cut. So I am now the British girl with the lopsided hair until i go home! I would not reccomend this place at all. Pros: Affordable Cons: Rude more

Really quality, fantastic service by cool, real people. 2/20/2008

First of all...I'm phobic about haircuts/colors/processes. In my history, I've had enough bad experiences (perms, soccer-mom hair at 14, asymmetrical haircut when only 65-year-old new age women have them) to know what is not good. That said, Mousey Brown has totally impressed me every time I've gone. I was smitten with the place on my first visit when I had decided that I want to grow out my (natural and very premature) gray instead of dye it and not only did Andrew (my stylist) NOT try to convince me otherwise, but he and another stylist there consulted on how to do it best and both made me feel great about my decision by telling me in all sincerity that I could work it. I've been once more since then. Each time, not only was Andrew's work fantastic, but I had a great experience at the salon. I'm going back on Friday. Mousey Brown has almost cured me of my haircut phobia! Pros: quality of work, service, price, ambience Cons: don't schedule anything for a while after, because sometimes you may wait for a bit. more

easy simple great cuts 1/25/2008

i usually don't write reviews either but i've had a tough time finding a place i liked; i called on a whim and lacey was able to take me; she consulted me about my hair and gave me exactly what a wanted--a cut that will allow my hair and bangs to grow out in a way that's still hip and stylish. she didn't take too much off and she gave me advice as to options i had re: growing my hair long...this is a simple, quiet, cute salon-- when i was there the staff outnumbered me! but don't be intimidated, and lacey is awesome. the cut was quick but the results were great. Pros: fair prices, good cuts, local for wmsburg/greenpoint residents Cons: almost too quiet in salon more

lacey is awesome! 12/15/2007

I never write reviews but went to this salon today for the first time and loved it!! Lacey was excellent and walked me through what she felt was best for my hair and kept checking in with me to make sure she wasn't going to short. it was perfect and it looks adorable! even got some compliments on the way to the subway... I have crazy curly mixed hair and I am always afraid to try a new stylist because I have had so many traumatic haircuts but I will definately be going back for my next haircut! Pros: nice staff! really skilled! Cons: none that i can think of... more

Morons- Part II 11/17/2007

Part II\r \r I feel it necessary to respond to their condescending message to check your calendars. We did do that, and they screwed up. This is the kind of lame excuse and lack of professionalism you should expect from this rundown chop shop. AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS BECAUSE THEY DON'T TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR SCREW-UPS.\r \r \r Part I (previous review to which they responded condescendingly)\r \r My girl booked an appointment, and they totally screwed it up and put it for the following week. When she went in there, they did not even squeeze her in or apologize.\r \r And she had been planning to get her hair done for a special occasion. Not worth the mismanagement and incompetence. more

wouldn't go any where else anymore 10/30/2007

I can't believe I didn't know this place was there. It was the best experience of my hair's life. They took there time I wasn't being rushed or pressured into doing something with my hair that I wasn't ready to do. They were so polite and easy going. I love the shop too very cute. They knew exactly what I wanted before even had a chance to say anything. If anything else I think that's amazing. Believe me your hair is worth it check them out. more

Great haircuts and atmosphere 7/5/2007

I have been a customer of Mousey Brown for a number of years, I travel from Queens to get my hair cut.\r I cant see myself going anywhere else. Meredith cuts my hair, and she is terrific, she listens to you when you tell her what you want and has always given me great advise on coloring and hair tips. It is a good feeling when you trust your stylist completely.\r The atmosphere in the shop is very comfortable and it is just a great haircutting experience. Mousey Brown does a what a Salon should do! Pros: Ambience, Parking is good Cons: Dont have any more

never going anywhere else! ever! 6/21/2007

i am usually waaaay too lazy to write reviews but after going here i have to.. I had been a loyal customer of a certain other williamsburg salon for nearly five years, and felt my experiences there growing from pretty great to mediocre, and also further away from my new apartment, so i decided to try out mousey brown. i saw lacey and holy cow, she gave me the best haircut of my life. i have never been so happy with a cut, it was as if she finally got what i have been trying to explain to stylists for years. i have also never had so many compliments about my hair. and, it was so simple, it only took her about fifteen minutes to make my hair look 50 times better! i continue to get compliments about my cut, nearly a month later. the atmosphere was nice, and no one was snooty. I am officially hooked. Pros: decent price, talented staff, nice atmosphere more

My new hair styist is Andrew! 6/3/2007

I've just moved here recently and now am in need of a great new hair stylist. My friend actually recommended me to mousey brown, so I just made an appointment and was scheduled a color/ cut with Andrew. I love the experience of being in there and the most important thing was that he listened to me, unlike most stylist that I've had in the past that would just do whatever. I'm so satisfy with everything and I've also gotten a lot of complements. I'm definitely gonna go back to him and tell all my friends about him! Pros: Andrew Cons: Can't think of any. more

Home run from Day 1 5/11/2007

I have never posted anything on a website like this, but I had to step in when I read that ridiculous review that was posted. I have been having my hair done by Lacey @ Mousey Brown for over a year now. I have NEVER gotten so many compliments and raves over my hair in my life. As for the salon...it is adorable. I travel an hour to get over there, and pass about 5000 other salons along the way but it is well worth the effort. The other stylists are always very nice, the building is super cute & I have never been anything but pleased with my experience. Bottom line, if you are an unhappy person with a nasty look on your face at all times- no one can make you happy. I always leave Mousey Brown with a huge smile on my face because Lacey has once again rocked it out! Pros: Great staff, Tons of talent more

My hair's prettier than yours! 5/6/2007

Meredith (the owner) has been doing my hair for about eight years now and I couldn't be happier with her. I know this is most of Mousey Brown's clients' experience, but I read the snippy (pun intended) review by one of their rare dissatisfied customers and had to reply.\r \r I too have been the slightly nutty broad who goes into the hair salon with a sheaf of delusional photo reference for my stylist. Never mind that my hair is wavy with a slight frizz and I refuse to do more than a cursory blowdry every other day, I wanted my hair to look like straight, shining, sheets of glass, damnit. Meredith is the rare hair stylist who'll tell you that she could definitely do what you want and it'll look good, but add that you'll probably never bother with the amount of upkeep necessary to keep it looking that way. Then she'll suggest something that brings out the best in my hair. A 'do I'll be able to manage.\r \r I love this place and have recommended it to every woman I know. Armond the sometimes receptionist also does a wicked eyebrow tweezing (no wax!). The atmosphere is low-key and pleasant and while they sell products, they don't ""sell"" the hell out of you. If you ask, they'll tell you what they're using (and everything smells so good, chances are, you'll ask), but they won't tell you that your hair will be a disaster unless you purchase a $90 jar of heat-resistant, conditioning balm concocted out of the placenta of Norweigan Mountain Goats. \r \r In a section of town that's being taken over by shiny glass buildings and the accompanying uptight yupster jerks, it's nice to step into Mousey Brown and be reminded of a time when Williamsburg was more like a well-dressed, arts-fartsy Mayberry. And to emerge from the experience looking like a million bucks. \r \r Pros: Friendly, fun, casual, smells good! Cons: construction nearby (though there's nothing they can do about that!) more

A Daycare Center, Not a Salon 5/1/2007

Sorry folks, I am unable to update you on my latest experience at Mousey Brown because the owner called me and told me I would have to find another salon because of, you guessed it, my last posting! Although I magnanimously agreed to give Mousey Brown another chance, it appears that they don't believe in second chances. I was told that the stylist whom I referenced in my last posting was an ""artist"" and that he was ""sensitive"" and that apparently no one in the salon now could do my hair because they were ""afraid of me"". I believe my posting was honest and balanced (please judge for yourself) and if that's what scares them, than that doesn't say much for their business ethic. Contrary to what the owner replied to my posting, she is not the least bit concerned with making me happy and apparently refuses to service anyone that expresses dissatisfaction with their hair. This is New York City; the people at Mousey Brown need to develop a little bit thicker skin. There are thousands of salons that care about pleasing their customers and who aren't afraid of a little criticism. Don't waste your time with this daycare center; find a real salon. I recommend Antonio Prieto if you can afford it. Prior Posting: I thought this would show up as another posting but it replaced my original posting. I originally posted that the salon had Yo Yo quality. I stated that I was happy with the first time that Andrew did my hair but the last time I spent $150 and 3 hours to leave feeling dowdy and depressed for 5 weeks. This was my 2nd experience with Mousey Brown from when I lived in the neigborhood before and also found that I received inconsistent service. My posting stated that I had decided to make another appointment to give it another chance since this time around we were 50/50 and that I would update my posting after that - unfortunately, I did not get the opportunity to change that ratio. Pros: little wait, friendly staff, easy to get an appointment Cons: salon is always cold, inconsistent quality, staff is not up to snuff on latest techniques more

Super Duper Hair-do! 3/15/2007

I went to Mousey Brown after receiving a terribly yucky haircut from the other Williamsburg salon. Luckily, Chris was there to help me get my hippness back. We laughed and he was as baffled as I by the cut the other dude gave me, and was so very kind & refrained from saying anything bad about his 'competition.' I thought was totally cool of him! Really. No need for that. \r \r Anyway, he understood my plight, understood what my hair was capable of, what I was looking for in the first place, and did a lovely job. I now how my classic yet hipster hair back - very versatile and a really nice cut. Feels great. He explained to me everything he was going to do to fix the cut. I was so nervous about going into a salon again after what happened, but my experience was great. \r \r This place used to be iffy at one point, but its back to its original sparkle and splendor! Its also not a pretentious or too-expenive hipster haircuttery. \r Pros: Ask for Chris. He'll do a great job and he's hot. Cons: Used to be Iffy. more

Check out the great cut and color I got from Mousey Brown, that fits my look, with just an updated tweak! 3/7/2007

I have been enjoying the haircuts and color at ?Mousey Brown? for about 8 years. Previous to going to ?Mousey? I had stayed with hairdressers for a year at most before they stopped listening to me and decided I should be a black and white blond or some other variation of high-maintenance hair. This is my 1st review ever. \r \r I remember telling Meredith, the owner and great hair-cutter and colorist, that I still wanted a natural look but I wanted to be a little more fun and festive for the holidays. She just lifted my highlights enough that I really enjoyed them for the holiday season and dropped back to easier maintenance for Spring. I like that Meredith will gladly leave hair longer if you like but always cuts short if you want. Whether Meredith does it or another stylist, they listen to your wishes. They are all so nice there, I always walk out feeling wonderful, like I lost weight.\r \r The unpretentious proprietor has made the feeling of a down-home beauty parlor which is so refreshing for me as a veteran of model nights at all the most expensive salons in Manhattan, yet much happier at ""Mousey."" Yet it still has a Williamsburg flavor and I have seen the newest looks and colors walking out of there on model types, although I just like my more laid-back natural look. Meredith has coached me gently into a more glamorous cut as I learned how to do it.\r \r I found an easy way there. ?Mousey? is at Lorimer and Bayard so I go another two stops on the L past Bedford, to Graham Ave. (10 min from Union Sq) and transfer to the B43 Bus at the stop right in front of Dunkin? Donuts (=going north toward Greenpoint,) and ride 10-20 blocks just past the BQE to Bayard where I cross the street and walk a few short blocks (3-4) on Bayard (a left turn from the direction of the bus) west to Lorimer. So far never more than 40 minutes from Midtown, and worth the results! You are certainly better to follow the directions they give you at the salon, but I like my way. Pros: You get what you want only upgraded. Cons: Sometimes telephone glitches more

Best salon in the area - ask for Chris! 2/17/2007

I was recommened to Mousey Brown by a friend and had the most amazing cut and color by Chris, one of the stylists there. He was so at ease with the color job (which was totally ruined at another salon I went to). Chris did a color correction and trim and I was so happy with the result. I will definitely go back! Everyone seems so down to earth there, easy to talk to and the mood is relaxed and comfortable. Chris is especially nice and really seems to know what he's doing. Great place! Pros: Really good service, stylist was excellent, reasonable prices, great ambience Cons: A little out of the way, but worth it! more

best in 11211 1/10/2007

I hate it when places I like get too busy 'cuz it 's hard then to get an appointment.\r but these guys deserve it . great color work. They like long hair. It's not too snooty.\r real basic. Real good.Nice selection of product. \r Plus, I run the track in McCarren Park before I go in, and they clean me up real nice.\r Do a treatment too; if your hair is damaged. They work.\r A truly great Brooklyn salon.\r I let them do my man's hair as well. Pros: chill, clean, polite Cons: not open in the morning more

nobody does it better 12/16/2006

i can't say anything about the other stylists, as mousey brown owner meredith has done my hair for 10 years. reason? she's the best. absolutely, positively, hands down one of the best stylists in NYC, and that's saying somethin'. me, myself, i don't know of a stylist who is better. i don't know how anyone could be better.\r \r ms. meredith chesney, as proprietress, is the heart and soul of the operation, and every detail reflects her touch. the salon is professional, yet casual, and as comforting as your favorite old soft cotton shirt. her demeanor is calm and sweet, and she really does run an old fashioned beauty shop.\r \r she'll make you beautiful. she's an expert cutter, of course - she's also an extraordinary colorist. meredith takes one look at you and understands your coloring, your lifestyle, your desires. she's like some kind of hair whisperer. a stylist who takes such care and pride in her work, genuinely caring about your well being and happiness, is one in a million.\r \r so, yes, i highly recommend mousey brown, and the stylists that meredith chooses to be a part of her salon.\r \r lest i forget - she'll dye lashes, eyebrows, give your healing scalp treatments, blowouts and styles for parties, photo shoots, and weddings, and tell you which products to use, though she never pushes. geez, louise, this is the most effusive review i've ever written, albeit on of the few reviews i've ever written. i love me some mousey brown. Pros: completely professional and talented stylists in a very special and lovely atmosphere Cons: i can only get my hair done every six weeks or so more

Laci's got the magic touch for curly locks 11/21/2006

I have hard to manage, fine, wavy/curly hair. It resembles something between a bad ogilvy home perm and lint. I've always longed for the perfect curl, straight hair or at least a style for crying out loud! Since I am not rich enough to go to a fancy salon that specializes in curls. After meeting Laci, there's no need to. Laci spoke to me prior to my haircut and actually LISTENED to what I needed. She asked how I normally style it, prep it, wash it and suggested a cut that's appropriate to my lifestyle and hair texture. Then she got to work - first by cutting it dry, then washing it and then really going to town. I told her I wanted volume and boy howdy did I get it. I was a little stunned at first since my hair did things I didn't think it could do - like LOOK GOOD!! Laci was awesome and didn't push services or products, just merely letting me know what my options were. I DID buy product because her work with it spoke for itself. I have completely embraced my waves and I am absolutely loving my hair and the style Laci taught me. (Basically put product in it and leave it be). I've gotten so many compliments on my hair, and from people that rarely speak to me (my boss). I'll gladly trek into Brooklyn from Manhattan. Laci Rules!! Pros: Price, Haircutting knowledge of curly hair Cons: it's in brooklyn (not really a con) more

the best salon 9/13/2006

After my first visit to this highly recommended salon, I became a regular customer. Meredith and her creative team are all great--they listen to what you want, and make it happen. They will share good ideas with you if you're not sure. It is a nice, relaxed atmosphere, you never feel rushed. There is a really good energy in the space, and it follows you when you leave--looking great. more
