Don't Do It! 4/14/2009

This salon was rude and snobby from the first time I walked in, but it' s the closest salon to me so I purchased products from here, but NEVER AGAIN. I use to live in Boston near a wonderful Aveda salon and so I thought because this was an Aveda salon too that the quality would be good . I saved up for 2 months to afford a color job. I went in with a 3 pictures of the color hair I wanted. Think Julia Roberts/Jennifer Anniston, I walked out with Angelica Houston black and grey highlights. I bawled. I told the stylist this isn't right and that I wasn't happy and he told me it ""looked just like the picture"". I was trying to be nice so I said I would sleep on it and went home and cried so more. It was so UGLY and completely FRIED. Even my husband said it was bad. When I went back the next morning the receptionist was Not Helpful, Not Interested & Not friendly. I did eventually get to see the stylist who screwed up my hair. Store policy clearly states that the one who screwed it up is the one that has to fix it. huh? He wasn't good to begin with. He consulted with the ""master stylist"" who touched my hair like it was sewer sludge, told me it was my hair that was messed up and that the stylist did it right. Ok. I left with dark brown hair. Not Blonde, not even close to blonde! No one said sorry. They said it was my fault that my hair doesn't hold color and asked me wasn't I happy now that I had a nice brown hair color. ""Um, No"" And then on the way out the man tried to sell me shampoo! I spent $200 dollars. I understand stylists make mistakes, but I spending $200 dollars for a bad color job and then to be insulted on top of it was just too much. Worst salon experience ever!!!!! Pros: Aveda Products Cons: everyhing else more

Would gladly turn back time to have not gone here. 12/16/2008

This is the third review I have left. First review, 1 star, because they completely botched my highlight. Second review, 5 stars, because they offered to fix it for free. Now third review, 2 stars. The owner is so sweet and really nice to offer to fix my hair - he opened the salon early, he spent painstaking time on it, and was very kind about it, never bitter about having to fix one of his stylist's errors. I completely disagree with all the diva reviews of him. He seems like a wonderful person. The other man working there, Brian, is also so kind and wonderfully sweet. I really like both of them. They are the only reason I am giving two stars - I cannot bring myself to give just one again because they are so kind. The girl, on the other hand, who did my hair in the first place is just wretched and should not be allowed to touch anyone's hair. Anyway, so aside from the sweetness of the manager, I have to give two stars because my hair still looks awful. I went in as a blond with dark roots, to get a touch up, and the first day I came out looking exactly the same, dark roots and all. The second day, I went in for the original touch up I had requested and came out as a mousey brunette with red undertones. The color variation is fabulous, it is clear that he knows how to apply highlights, but the color itself is not at all what I wanted. And it was not free to fix it, as they said it would be. I was blond and happy being blond, and $260 later, I am an unhappy brunette. I am getting married in two weeks and so I have to pay to have it fixed yet again...but this time, I have found another salon. If you value your time and money, go someplace else. They are super sweet, but sometimes sweet is just not worth it. more

Horrible service 5/10/2008

Got an OK haircut for $83. The stylist, Troy, didn't seem to care too much about basics like getting a robe that fits well enough to make sure that I didn't get covered in hair. After cutting my hair, he told me that ""I was free to walk around or to sit in the waiting area"" so someone could wash and blow-dry my hair. Umm, thanks. After waiting for 15 minutes and then being told that it would take another 15 before anyone could wash my hair, I decided to take off (and definitely not return for future cuts). I would have thought that an aveda salon would have better service. Cons: service more

Great Haircut 12/29/2007

After reading all the previous reviews of this place, I feel compelled to write my own. I have been going to Il Camelion and have had Troy cut my hair for almost two years. (so about 4 -5 haircuts.) Each haircut has been spectacular! When I wanted long layers, he gave me long layers. When I wanted ""almost bangs . . . but not too short"" -- that is exactly what I got. I leave the salon each time feeling great, and I get complements on my haircuts all the time. I would HIGHLY recommend this salon. I read others who posted that Troy has an ""uber-diva"" attitude and that he is not well liked. I think he is fine. Persoanlly, I would rather have someone with an attitude cut my hair, and do it well, then to have somone who I liked give me a bad cut. (although in this case, I do like Troy.) The only critique I have is that Troy cuts my hair but never does the drying. Another stylist always dries my hair. This is only annoying because then I have to tip more people. more

Terrible! 10/15/2007

I'm not sure that I can say anything that has not been said before about this place. I have never written a review like this but I could not let this go unnoticed. For those of you who are reading this and are thinking "" maybe this person just had a bad experience, it's not the norm..."" Look at how many people were so unsatisfied they felt the need to take 30 minutes out of their day to write about this review to help you out so you don't make the same mistake. Pros: Cool neighborhood Cons: Troy more

Looking for a former employee 8/9/2007

I had a great haircut here by a woman named Sika from Iceland. She gave me an amazing haircut, but no longer works at the salon. I went in again and the owner cut my hair. he did an awful job. Does anyone have any information about Sika? I really want to find out where she went because I need to get the chop job recut and I can't seem to find any information about what salon she went to. Thanks! more

Beware! 7/6/2007

Man! I wish I could remember the person's name who cut my hair. I went in for a 1-2 inch trim of my (formerly) very long hair-- it was about halfway down my back. The stylyst suggested that I cut about 3 or 4 inches off to get rid of all split ends, dry hair, etc. My hair wasn't damaged or anything mind you-- I always (used to at least) get compliments on my long, healthy hair. I confess that it *had* been quite a while since I got a trim, so I went along with it. I was very firm about NO LAYERS. Well judging by the measly one star I gave this place, you can guess what happened next. About 8 inches of my hair which I had worked so hard and long at growing (ok, so I didn't work THAT hard to grow it, but I was proud of it!) was chopped off. And I had this uber-stylish shaggy cut complete with lots of layers-- starting above shoulders! Not what I asked for! I just wanted my long hair to be trimmed! My hair was about 1.5 inches past my shoulders at the end of it. Even though I am usually afraid of speaking up, halfway through the haircut I told him that I was afraid it was getting too short and reminded him of my firm NO LAYER rule. The hair stylist actually said to me that he knows better than me what looks good. I was shocked that he actually fessed up to doing the opposite of what I asked for. I thought he would say ""it's not short, silly girl."" UGH! Do not go here. After this, I was on the verge of tears although I tried to hide it. Girls-- you know how devastating an unwanted loss of hair can be, right!?! I felt so insulted as I shelled out the nearly 100 bucks for this haircut. I wish I had the nerve to refuse on account of the stylist admitting that he did the opposite of what I wanted. But I just wanted to get the heck outta there. I would recommend The Fez, which is very close to this place. Pros: good location, nice atmosphere, the stylist *did* spend a lot of time with me... Cons: attitude of staff, prices more

Apphauled and offended 6/11/2007

The owner, Troy does not know how to speak to his clients and clearly has never learned the art of client relations. I don't know who he thinks he is. Cons: They don't know how to treat first-time clients more

A stylist was perhaps having a bad day, and gave me a VERY bad hair day... 1/8/2007

I've never had something so horrible to say about ANY place, but I can't stress enough what an awful experience I had here. Granted it was with only one stylist, so I really can't speak for another person's experience. I can't remember the name of the stylist, making my review probably not so helpful ;) In any case what transpired may sound like a conscious sabotage on the part of the stylist, but I'm the type of customer who's very easy-going, actually a little shy and if anything overly anxious to avoid confrontation (as will become apparent.) My hair was quite long and thick and I wanted a trim - I was stunned when the stylist took his scissors and simply went around the base of my hair 6 or 7 times - done in less than 2 minutes, there was no sectioning of hair at all, and when I got home there were huge chunks longer than others. During small talk I'd mentioned that I air dryed my hair at home so when he was done he said, ""Good, then I'll just leave it, OK?"" My hair was about 2 feet long and sopping wet. I wanted badly to ask for him to dry it, but I was so phased by the experience, and worried about making him angry. He asked me what sign I was and I told him - he said it was his mother's sign and he did NOT get along with her at all. I didn't get it - if I'd been a horrible customer - rude, bossy, anything remotely like it, I might understand if not agree with a botched job, but I'm such an easy-going person - downright boring. I was so mad at myself for not returning and telling the manager, but I didn't want to see this guy again. I had to warn others - I'm sorry I don't have a name, but any place that is going to charge what this place did for SUCH an awful job has something wrong with it...I can't believe I'm the only person who ever had a lousy haircut from this guy. more

Good news for people that like bad hair 11/30/2006

Had the worst color experience there ever. I could have done a better job myself. I went in and told the stylist what I wanted, went over it twice...only to have her mess it up (and then she even tried to do the ""oh that looks fabulous"" routine). I had two-toned hair! It was horrible. After I asked her to fix it, she gave me a lot of attitude. I still ended up with brassy blonde and hair that feels like straw. Then after all that, they charged me over $200. I could have gone to my old salon in Manhattan and gotten a great job for the same amount. What a rip-off! Don't bother to come here. Pros: the guy who shampooed my hair was very nice. Cons: Everything else more

""karma chamelion"" 1/24/2006

I walked in and got an appointment there and then. Everyone was polite and accomodating, I don't expect a lot from conditioner application having had some horrors in the past, but this one took me to another world. The stylist was lovely and discussed all aspects of the cut before starting....she was also good chat. The end result is better than I hoped for or expected, and I am pleased to have found such a great place near to where I live. more

Save Your Money, Dignity . . . 10/3/2005

You'd think that a name like Aveda implies quality service, but I probably would have been better off styling my hair with toddler scissors and my left-hand Everything seemed to be going fine up to the point I sat down in the chair. Unfortunately, my very simple instructions to leave my hair mid-length and just thin out the bulk proved to be too laborious or complex a task for the stylist. Instead, I spent the next HOUR AND A HALF, being seriously berated/hit on for my seemingly bad posture--the guy literally told me he was going to ""give me a spanking,"" if I didn't sit up straight. Then, after being queried on my sexual preference which I told him was straight, I spent the remainder of the session listening to the importance of tolerance and equality and my supposed lack thereof. . . Give me a break! more

Very Satisfied 1/4/2005

I saw Christine and she gave me the best haircut I have had in years. She understood what I wanted and was able to take away damage while minimizing the length she took. The style was very easy to keep up and style...so much so that I haven't been back in months--but, I just made an appointment with her for tomorrow! more

Nice place. 2/16/2004

I have been here 3 times, once for color. Very pleased with my color, though it's gone after a couple months. Christina, my stylist, doesn't rush, like so many Manhattan salons, and I have no trouble getting an appt. She does a good job, because she doesn't assume I am going to spend hours on my hair and that I want the latest trend. I am never pressured to buy products. Pros: quiet, cheap, clean more

Average Camelion 11/16/2002

In a nutshell: appearances can be deceving. This is a beautiful Aveda salon, but the skill of its stylists is not up to par. I've had 2 different stylists over the past 2 yrs and both were average--doing a perfectly fine job with trims, but anything more drastic, modern, or creative is a bit beyond their abilities. The cuts are moderately priced ($35-$55), but even that seems like a bit too much for what you get. Supercuts may be of better value. They are extremely nice, though, and you will have a pleasant experience, though maybe not an ideal haircut. more

Great Cuts!! 10/16/2002

I just moved from the slope and I miss Levi! He's definitely one of the best stylists i've ever had- i'm still deciding whether or not to brave the commute out there for him... Pros: great cuts, not expensive more
