A good, if uppity, salon (spa/haircuts/styling) 8/10/2005

It's been a bit since I went, as "my" hairstylist left the operation a couple months back and I'm hestiant to drop $50 on someone who hasn't been recommended. As with any salon, it's really more about "your" person there rather than the business itself, which makes a review a bit tricky. I can confidently say Christina was awesome - always gave me a cut I liked, and was quite cute and friendly to boot. But I can also say that I haven't been strongly tempted to return since she left. I choose to spend my money on certain things - say, photo gear for my profession - and not a whole lot on, say, clothes. Typical to a salon, I felt a bit "judged" walking in there, and seemingly as someone who was not quite cool enough for the counter person. I always find this ironic, because though I dress a bit like an I.T. professional, I actually work in fashion and probably know more "important people" than they do. I don't really care about such things - but it makes me smile inwardly when people like that seem to be judging me as less cool-and-connected than themselves. It's the only local place I know to buy Aveda products - so if you want them, this is pretty much your place to go. However, as it is the only local place, the prices reflect it; there's not a deep discount on product. I only ever had Christina do my hair, so I can't say what other's prices run - but she charged me $40 for a guy's haircut, so I'm extrapolating that into a guess that a girl could expect to pay $60-$100, depending upon what she wants (more for highlights, etc) and who does it. Note: I was always required to provide a credit card number when reserving by phone and was told their would be a charge for last-minute cancellations. Be warned. Note 2: There's also a spa, but though my girlfriend got me a gift certificate I have yet to cash it in, so cannot comment on that. I will add that information once I've used the gift. more
