Best

First of all, this is a high end restaurant, they take reservations, and most people go well dressed. I like to go to restaurants with great food but I do not like to dress up, an...

Worst

I used to pass by Farallon on the weekends and always wanted to try it out. From the outside, the decor looks really grand. But when I actually went there, it wasn't so special....

Something's happened to the bar 11/22/2006

The drinks, at least, used to be great here. Lately, the old standbys have changed for the markedly worse. The food has always been not what you quite wanted it to be, even at a lesser price scale. I've gotten really tired of the ""portholes"" in the bar table area. Pros: Convenient location more

Apps and service great, entrees were weak 11/18/2006

Service was great, dungeness appetizer was great. i had the grilled snapper. the fish came not de-boned, which wasn't a problem for me (i was with my boyfriend), but could ahve been awkward for business or more formal dining. it was crispy on the outside, and unfortunately paired with soggy peppers and chorizo and then topped with basil creme fraiche. overall, fish was good, but the overall dish composition was disappointing. BF had the seared arctic char -- maybe it's just a matter of taste, but i'll take tuna seared, this fish didn't seem to really work with that method of preparation. overall, entrees were good, but not worth the $$. Pros: service, appetizers Cons: entrees were weak more

Best food in San Fran! 9/24/2006

My girlfriend and I ate here earlier this month. We were seated just a few minutes on arrival by very attentive staff and were made to feel very welcome. The waiter was very friendly and helpful and gave us some good recommendations. The food was OUTSTANDING and certainly one the very best meals we've ever had. The decore was amazing, it was like being in an old Hollywood film! This is a top place to eat but the dress code is just smart / casual which is nice. We had a fantastic meal here and I'd return to San Francisco just to dine here again! The only negative was that the staff were perhaps a little TOO friendly and attentive which did get on our nerves slightly. However, please do not let that put you off eating here, it's a great, fun place to eat. more

Horrible service 9/22/2006

While this restaurant is beautiful (Disneyesque) and the food might have been very good, we were too tired and unhappy to appreciate either. This is probably the worst service I have ever had--totally inattentive. We were seated 30 minutes after our reservation time with no explanation. After our appetizers, we waited nearly an hour for the entrees to arrive. Our waiter never came by to check on us or explain the delay. When the food was finally served, there was no apology-- nothing. So, with a 8:45 reservation, our dinners were finally served around 10:30. You do the math. Not worth the time or money unless you are not interested in eating and just want to sit and enjoy the decor. more

good as advertised 9/4/2006

this place is as good as everyone says it is. service is somewhat slow but very hands-on when they're there. the only gaffe was a questionable wine recommendation by the server but we were able to easily exchange it for a better option. will definitely return! Pros: fresh seafood and romantic setting Cons: slow service but hands-on more

Great seafood for a special occasion 7/18/2006

My husband surprised me with a birthday dinner at Farallon which was exquisite. The food was amazing and the decor is both funky (in the bar area) and grand (in the big dining room). My favorite part of the evening is when our waiter came out with my dessert with Happy Birthday written in chocolate!!! Our waiter was extremely attentative and friendly, his recommendations on wines were excellent!!! Will definitely go back again and again!!! Pros: Great seafood, excellent service Cons: need to make reservation ahead of time more

Great Every Time 7/11/2006

The Citysearch critic who wrote her opinion of the place must have had a bad day. This is one of the classics of San Francisco. I have gone there for years and it is consistently fabulous. Also I am in my 30's and she describes it as ""well heeled"" and older crowd.. So not every one is 21, but it certainly isn't old there. It is the kind of place that if you weren't happy with something, I'm sure they would take care of it for you. Pros: Elegant great service, great food and wine valet parking! more

Beautiful! 7/5/2006

This is one of my most favorite places in the city! I came here for my birthday when I first moved here and proceeded to go here for every other special occasion until I finally branched out! Still, it remains one of my favorites. The service is A+, the decor is amazing, and the food is ALWAYS delicious. Pros: Food, service, decor Cons: A bit pricey but worth it! more

A SF classic 5/7/2006

This has been our ""go to"" celebration spot since it opened in 1997. It's as fresh today as it has always been. The food is delicious and innovative without being contrived. The staff is always friendly, efficient and very knowledgable. Of course the dining rooms are beautiful!! The wine guys are very attentive and professional. We continue to be impressed. Don't miss the oysters!! The iced shellfish platters are amazing too. Pros: great feel, great staff, great food Cons: expensive, loud more

My Favorite Restaurant In The City! 5/3/2006

Amazing!! Every time we eat at Farallon we have an incredible time! The waitstaff and sommeliers are well polished and never stuffy, the food is always creative and delicious and the decor is an underwater world that you have to see to appreciate. If you have never been, go... now! Pros: service, food, decor more

The best seafood restaurant in the city! 5/2/2006

I have dined in most of the highend restaurants in the city and Farallon is the one I will always go back to. The Food is always amazing and the menu changes frequently so we always have new things to fall in love with! The decor is a must see!! The service is fine dining yet never stuffy. We had a party in the fine dining ""beluga"" room for 100 guests and it was every bit as good the ala carte restaurant!! Keep up the good work!! Pros: Always Changing menu, Fantastic Service, Decor Cons: have yet to find one more

not impressed 4/3/2006

My experience at the Farallon did not come close to matching it's reputation for a wonderful dining experience. Everything I ordered was horrible. I sent back my sashimi appetizer and salad with figs as they were barely edible and surely not worth the price. Overall, the decor of the place is unique and fun, and the food is not worth the price, I could make much better stuff at home. Pros: decor, service Cons: food/taste, price more

worked for me 3/29/2006

I went into Farallon last night (Tues) with a friend who i was trying to impress. Did not dissapoint. Everyone who worked there looked happy and came across as very helpful. Menu was explained by very knowledgeable server and when the food came it exceded the description. Artfully arranged, the food rocked. Every item on the plate was well seasoned and portions were just right. By the time I finished my app of gnocchi and scallops, I didn't feel overwhelmed by muddy flavors- each bite left me wanting more. Fish entree was cooked perfect as was my friend's lamb. I'm glad i live in a city with restaurants who take such a professional approach to food. I'll be back. Pros: food, service Cons: parking more

Overhyped, Overpriced, Not worth your money! 3/6/2006

The prices were all too high - maybe it works for tourists, but for locals, a much better deal for better food can be found at many other restaurants. Our server was competent, but literally didn't speak a single word to us the entire evening. The woman who brought the wine was the only one who acknowledged our presence the entire night. The man who seated us and took our coats did not give us a ticket, so it created great confusion when we left b/c no one could locate our jackets and we had to be interrogated about the brands of our coats. It was an okay experience, but I will never go back and will certainly never recommend the restaurant as anything more than eye candy. Zero substance, good food, but the prices are unjustly high. more

Fabulous Farallon 10/27/2005

The Farallon restaurant, and Tavern on the Green in New York, have only one thing in common more or less, judging by reviews: Atmosphere. Otherwise, Farallon is more akin to Gary Danko, in food and service. It is an excellent special occasion place. Seafood here has been better than at Aqua, and considering that Aqua is no longer ""chefed"" by Michael Mina, seafood is MUCH better. I go to a seafood restaurant for the seafood. I would therefore return to Farallon. Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Service more

User review by food911 9/26/2005

This place is absolutely gorgeous. The service is professional and felt like I was catered to at every whim, even if excessively so. We didn't have a reservation but was seated promptly and enjoyed their 3 course-prix fixe (before 6pm). Though the food was delicious, it wasn't over-the-top and our meal (for 2) was over $150. We thought we probably could've dined somewhere else to make it seem worth it. Did enjoy everything they had to offer though- amuse bouche, bone marrow & crab gratin, blue nose bass, the lemon cheesecake was surprisingly tasty despite the citysearch overview. Excellent wine list. Pros: SERVICE, FOOD, DECOR Cons: price more

must have been there on an off night... 9/21/2005

having had our share of top notch dining experiences throughout the world, our dinner at farrallon this past sunday night was, well, not even near the middle. nothing, except for the decor, met our expectations. the food lacked greatly in creativity and there was not one dish, that any of the 6 in my party had, which was memorable. the service was extremely superficial and impersonal. e.g. not even the most basic rule of napkin folding when a diner got up to go to the bathroom was followe - come on, a place of this caliber can and must do better. they live off their name and have become complacent. what a shame. Pros: atmosphere Cons: food creativity, service more

you may get what you don't wish for 8/19/2005

very expensive, small portions! I don't mind paying the price, but I don't like to leave a restaurant hungry. Cons: very expensive, small portions more

Why complain about the Price 8/19/2005

When I was unable to get into Masa, I called Farallon and booked a table for one. I had been to this great place only once before and although not my first choice, it will be the first place I return to next time in San Francisco (even if it is just for a layover) Wow, Everything was first rate and a great and well organized wine list ( this must be a new San Francisco trend) Their take on Seafood is inspirational and the waitstaff was cordial and gracious. When chatting with a water, I mentioned recent experiences in the Pacific Northwest, this got a laugh and an explanation, it seems that Portland and Seattle waiters a famous for their rudeness and curt behavior. Their salaries are high and people still tip generously. Go figure. Pros: Top knotch, Great Service, Wine List more

Excellent restaurant 7/15/2005

I have eaten in all the best restaurants in California. Great ones in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Farallon is one of the best. The food was excellent. Everything was cooked very well. I've been there three times now and the menu was different each time. Two visits were separated by less than a month. I enjoy taking guests there when they're looking to be wowed. The decor is great. The service is great. I recomend this restaurant to anyone that lives in San Francisco, and anyone who is visiting. more
