This probably comes and no surprise--LuLuc's has the BEST PANCAKES (excuse my enthusiasm) I've and the people who surround me, have ever had. Hands down. The prices are good (and ...

Worst

Really, really rude service - from a manager! The food is mediocre and high priced. Pros: You have other options. Cons: The service and the food.

Excellent brunch! 7/13/2010

Affordable.... tasty, refreshingly French. What else? Oh, yes, air-conditioned. Great for a relaxed brunch on a Sunday afternoon in the Brooklyn heat. Friendly staff, great coffee. Nothing else to add. Just check it out, aujourd'hui.... more

CAFE LULUc, 214 Smith Street, Brooklyn, AVOID! 8/5/2009

I visited this restaurant for a late night dinner after flying across the country. Three bites into my meal, I found a cigarette butt in my entree which the waiter verified as such. I refused a replacement entree. When I informed the restauranteur that I would be leaving, she tried to charge me and my date for our meals and would not let us leave without paying for at least our drinks. Unless you're interested in an ashy dish and zero concern for the quality of the food or the well-being of the diner, AVOID! Cons: Cigarettes in food more

BEST PANCAKES! 7/28/2008

This probably comes and no surprise--LuLuc's has the BEST PANCAKES (excuse my enthusiasm) I've and the people who surround me, have ever had. Hands down. The prices are good (and will hopefully stay that way)...but honestly, if you do go, the eggs benedict with bacon are dandy but the pancakes are amazing Good eats! more

Felt like I was in Paris 7/20/2008

My fiancee & I are hard-core gourmands & typically prefer our own cooking to what we're served in run of the mill spots. [We only eat at chains when dragged there against our will (we are, after all, New Yorkers).] So we enter every new restaurant with a ""prove yourself"" attitude. Pros: spectacular flavors, fresh seafood, romantic ambience Cons: don't go if you don't like the French (more room for us) more

Large Cardboard pieces in the Tortellini 7/2/2008

My friend got the Tortellini, and right away noticed that there was something strange about his meal, I thought they were potato skins, then saw the wwwww shape between two pieces of cardboard. We got the manager over and explained that that was not part of the meal and he said, ""ohh?"" and walked away with the plate still in front of him and out of site for almost 10 minutes. Finally our waiter came over and said, ""I understand that there was something wrong with your dish"" and smiled? I thought he was joking so asked him to repeat, he then said ""I talked to the manager and we will remove it from the bill, anything else"" this whole time not one I'm sorry was ever uttered. He finally brought the bill and I asked for exact change, I've never NOT left a tip ever in my life. I was baffled by the lack of response and shear non chalant attitude of all the staff, by the way the manager never, never came back to our table. I've gotten a better reaction and apology when Starbucks gave me the wrong drink, (not 2 pieces of cardboard 1x2 in my friends plate from obviously frozen tortellini) maybe the staff at Luluk needs to spend a week with a barrista at starbucks or a cashier at mcdonalds. Pros: Fiber in your food Cons: Cardboard in the tortellini - imagine what I didn't find more

Great brunch, and interesting dishes 5/31/2008

I really enjoy eating at Cafe Luluc. It has the ambiance of a french bistro, which is typically not my scene, but the dishes have a unique twist. I love the chick pea salad, and their summer soups, like the gezpacho and cold cucumber and yogurt. Their brunch is fantastic, and their outdoor garden is warm and inviting. I also love that they give you a glass bottle of water on the table, so you don't have to constantly hunt down your server for more water. The waitstaff is friendly, but I wouldn't recommend trying to deviate from the menu. Pros: Interesting dishes, Great brunch Cons: Requests for substitutions on the menu are often ""forgotten"" more

brunch and dinner 3/9/2008

Most any meal will be good and also cheap. I usually stick to the sandwiches. Brunch on sundays can all be lousy, and I wouldn't know, because I always get the pancakes. Those I can say with certainty are amazing. more

GREAT PLACE IN BROOKLYN YUPPIVILLE! 12/2/2007

ok, this is a good spot in downtown yuppie g--TTO of brooklyn. Now you have to expect the usual plan of trying to fit a table in every last inch of space. But that is supposedly cool that i can hear the trust fund babies talk about their gallery opening or some other pretentious babble. Pros: GREAT FOOD, Cons: YUPPIE HIPSTERVILLE, PRETENTIOUS, SNOBBY CUSTOMERS. more

Left a bad taste in my mouth. 6/16/2007

I have lived in the neighborhood for many years and finally decided to take a seat in this small cafe. I should have walked out immediately upon encountering the rude and unaccommodating wait staff. Against my better judgment, I remained and ordered. The food was greasy and bland. I walked out with a lighter wallet and a stomach ache - do not recommend. Pros: They have a menu. Cons: Terrible service, unpalatable food, overcharges. more

Watch your check 10/26/2006

Watch your check here. The checks are handwritten and the staff likes to ""estimate"" the sales tax and round up. I've been here twice, and twice, same thing. This despite the fact that there is a calculator sitting on the bar. And the staff was less than pleased when I pointed this out. I guess it's ok to rip off your customers as long as it's only a little. more

Amazing at Best, Average at Worst 9/18/2006

The surprising thing about the restaurant is that the quality of the food differs enormously. The appetizers- a bland crabcake, almost not very fresh-tasting mussels (but in a surprsingly good tomato sauce) and good but lacking some salt and flavor escargot- were inadequate. Although for the price it wasn't that outrageous (from 7 to 10 dollars). But some of the entries were simply delicious. The $15 dollar, medium rare steak, marinated, juicy and served in a rich red wine sauce with mashed potatoes was better then many far more expensive ones I've tried. Lamb with couscous was good, but not more then that..the mediterranean flavors were clearly lacking. Ravioli in pesto sauce were also good but not great. What blew me away was the fresh cheese gnocci with mushroom truffle sauce ($13). They were simply outstanding- savoury, rich with just enough cheese 'unami' and mushroom bite. I have honestly never ate better ravioly (or any kind of pasta dish) anywhere else. This doubled both as gourmet and comfort food. The warm chocolate cake for desert with fresh strawberries was also very good and definitely worth a try. Pros: entrees, ambience, garden Cons: appetizers, cheap wine list more

Best Bloody Brunch in Brooklyn 10/11/2005

LuluC has consistently delicious brunch (of note are the pancakes, salmon eggs benedict and ANY omelette you please) not to mention they make a mean Bellini. Let's face it...any place that makes a great breakfast and serves wonderful alcohol to accompany it has got to be pure genius. All the egg dishes are served with a small salad and fries and the fries are rapturous. I almost hate to give this place such a good review b/c I don't want more competition for a table! more

A wonderful spot. 2/6/2005

Service was excellent, all dishes were excellent. Getting the check was a bit of pain, but this is part of the ""atmosphere"" in a French place, right? Pulled pork sandwich: yum tiger shrimp appetizer:yum I will be back. Pros: food, service, atmosphere Cons: cash only more

Don't complain about the food! 7/7/2004

A friend and I went for dinner, the host was rude to us as we walked in, we stayed because the decor is charming and we wanted ""french"" food. Appetizer and wine was fine. The entrees were served cold. The steak frites was replaced(20mins later),a lobster entree(actually a small tail and corn ""tamale"" stuffed head) wasn't fixed, they took it without asking if I wanted anything else instead, and it was useless to try to explain why I was unhappy with it. When we received the bill they wanted to charge 2/3 of the price for the uneaten lobster. The host wasn't happy when I protested the bill and we were asked to never come back. Frankly, why would I? Pros: , the garden Cons: , description of entree, quality of entrees more

Consistently Good. 7/6/2004

Cafe Luluc is a gem. The food is tasty and original, the service is unbeatable and the environment is relaxing. I've eaten there nearly a dozen times within the past year. It's the first choice when my boyfriend and I want to have a late Friday dinner. I'm in love with the mesculun salad, which has a sweet basil dressing, and the well-seasoned veggie sandwich. My boyfriend is addicted to the steak, which is always cooked the way he asks, and the huge pile of accompanying crunchy fries. Beware, however, of the cash-only policy, which the cafe's owners implement at their other Smith Street locale, Cafe Banania. The ATM across the street must be making a killing. more

All I can speak for is the brunch... 4/1/2004

Which is consistantly excellent. The prices are always right (and under $10) - the Gravlox Salmon Benedict is the real winner on the brunch menu - always fresh, with a great tasting hollandaise sauce. Don't order a Bloody Mary from the bar though - they're watered down, over-peppered and devoid of any taste. Blah. Pros: Good atmosphere, Good food, Cheap more

Yum, with a small C 10/11/2003

I like this tiny little yellow place. It makes me feel good. The food is yummy (pulled pork samich is fab) and the garden is beautiful. Surprise find: one of the best burgers in the area! Pros: Pulled pork, cheese burger, It feels french Cons: Cash only more

The food is great! 3/10/2003

The food was SO good!!! The environment was great, warm and friendly. I reccomend the steak for those of you who aren't vegetarians (trust me!). Even the tiger shrimp salad and the creme bule was good from the beginning to the end of the meal. more
