I should say first that we've only had our flat-coated retriever groomed here once. (However, we take her every week for Adventure Park).
They did a great job with the grooming (just a neaten, not a full groom), and they give them breaks throughout so they don't get too stressed. You can leave them the whole day if need be, so it doubles as day care.
I'll put in a plug for Adventure Park too -- Nox is always excited when we pull up there in the mornings. They take the dogs to a 4 acre fenced-in park, where they play for a few hours before getting cleaned-up and returned for a rest until you pick them up. You can read all about it on their site:

This is a great place to go if you're looking for reasonably priced beauty services. They even have a couple of great 'happy hour' specials, including a brow wax for $10 and a manicure for $15. They also have fun special events; a friend and I had a great time at a makeup night complete with wine and appetizers. Their site has pricing for the full range of services they offer:

The atmosphere is definitely 'salon', not 'spa', so don't expect waterfalls and soothing music. Just good services for a good price.

When our daughter was born, I quickly found out that the first 3 months were pretty well filled with sleeping and feeding. Those seemed to be about the only issues me and my new-Mom friends talked about when we got together.
While I was pregnant I had read up on breastfeeding, but just didn't anticipate everything there was to know about baby's sleep. Silly, naive new-parent...I thought babies would just fall asleep when they were tired! After a month or so, I realized that wasn't quite the case - the little ones need a little help to learn good sleep habits.
Enter "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child"! I heard about this book from a few other Moms, and decided to check it out. It has been my sleep 'bible' ever since...if only I'd read it earlier! It has practical advice aimed at having a well-rested family. Emphasis is placed on watching your child's sleep signals, and helping them to get the sleep they need.
The beginning of the book outlines the basics of childhood sleep and gives you the data to support the theories and advice that follow. It goes on to address sleep by age, and special problems that may arise throughout childhood.
While the book certainly has a point-of-view when it comes to let-cry vs. no-cry (it's in the let-cry camp) it does allow for the parent to chose the no-cry solution as well. I appreciated that, since so many parenting books seem to have a my-way-or-the-highway approach.
Following the books principles, our 8 month old daughter now sleeps through the night (11-12 hours) and naps 2-3 times a day for a total of about 3 hours. She's happy, energetic and can tolerate the occasional skipped nap for a special occasion because she's generally so well-rested. Mom & Dad are more alert and rested, too :).

I've been getting rave reviews for everything I try out of the America's Test Kitchen cookbook. I love that I can just think of something I've always wanted to make, like a baked penne dish, and they've got a great recipe for it. Aside from the baked penne, I've made scalloped potatoes, a french toast bake, and a sun-dried tomato pasta salad.
The theory behind the book is the 'best' way to prepare things, from baked potatoes to more complex dishes. They've tried all the methods and tools so you don't have to experiment with several recipes before finding the best one. I love it!

Last Friday afternoon at about 3:30 I noticed that our furnace wasn't working and the temperature was down to 65 and falling. With an 11 month-old in the house, I knew we needed to get it working again quickly. Based on Judy's Book reviews, I called Blue Flame and couldn't have been happier. They were friendly on the phone, and even tried to get someone out that day even though it was so late in the afternoon. I called around to try to find someone for that day, but few could even come Saturday and were all more expensive.
When the technician came the next morning, he arrived right on time. Even though the furnace appeared to be working properly, he stayed and thoroughly tested it. He eventually did find that the ignition was sometimes failing, so perfomed some needed maintenance and tested it several more times. Before leaving, he gave us his cell number and told us to call if it acted up again over the weekend. He also told us how to get around the failed ignition so we could keep the house warm until the repair could be done. It was great peace of mind and made us feel a lot better about having to pay the after-hours rate.

Check out Watermark (or other credit unions) for better interest rates on checking and savings accounts. A quick check today shows wamu's basic savings rate at .25% and Watermark's at .75%.
The only potential drawback is a small number of branches. However, since Watermark doesn't charge ATM fees, you can use wamu or other credit union ATMs with no fee. If you make frequent in-person deposits and need a branch, just be sure there's one nearby. The upside to fewer branches is that service is a bit more personal and very friendly.
Online bill paying is also free, and has been a huge time-saver for me.

The nurses and office staff are all very friendly and helpful. And the location is very convenient -- just of I-5 across the freeway from Northgate Mall.

Based on a Judy's Book review, we interviewed and then selected Dr. Seru as the pediatrician for our newborn daughter Ella (she's now 10 weeks old).
She has been even better that I expected, especially when Ella was sick with RSV a couple weeks back. Dr. Seru never held back any information, letting us know how sick she was, but was completely reassuring at the same time. She went out of her way to follow-up on an ear infection, and helped us get through Ella's first illness with the least amount of worry possible.
On routine appointments, she has been just as wonderful. The front office staff and nurses are fabulous, too. I can't recommend her enough!

Ever since moving away from Loyal Heights and missing India Bistro, we've been looking for a good close-by Indian restaurant near our new house (in Olympic Hills, north of Northgate). We liked Cedars, but the drive kept us away, and we weren't thrilled with Masala on Northgate Way.
Now we've found the spot! Zaika is just north of NE 145th St, so it's in Shoreline (on 15th Ave NE, not far from the new Romios locale). We ordered take-out and the food was fabulous! We shared some Chicken Vindaloo and Chicken Tikka Masala - both were great and the Nan was top-notch too. Next time we'll check out the Tandoori. Can't wait to try their lunch buffet!
