I have been going to shows at this club since the early 90's (located then downtown) and can honestly say that it is one of the best clubs for a show in the country. Perhaps it is the size of the venue, or type of acts that it draws but I and my friends always enjoy shows here. There is a online calender or you can look in the city paper for a list of upcoming acts. Drinks are available, and unlike many clubs in America you can still smoke inside. This is also a great club to catch up and coming acts for a cheap price.

More
Union Station is, by far, the most ghetto mainstream movie theatre in the District and should be visited only for special movies such as Freddie vs. Jason; the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, or any or the horror flicks where audience participation only serves to enhance comedic value and the overall viewing experience.
Should you desire to watch a movie in silence, opt for one of the other theatres such as Loews in Georgetown or the new Regal in Gallery Place and avoid Union Station like the plague.

More
Considering almost every museum in DC is free, you might not think to check out the Phillips Collection in Dupont Circle, but it shouldn't be missed. The museum is in a mansion, similar to the Barnes Collection outside of Philadelphia except the building is not quite as extravagant, and the art is all approachable and intimate. There is usually a visiting exhibit, almost all of reknowned artists, but be careful, the place can get packed on weekends.

The National Gallery of Art is a part of the Smithsonian--so the biggest perk of visiting is that it's free to enter. The museum has a very large collection of art; try as I might, I've never been able to see the entire thing in one day--though it still pales in comparison to the size of some other art museums like the Met in New York or the Louvre in Paris. Their collection is decent--mostly paintings, with some sculptures here and there. If you go, I recommend trying some gelato in the cafeteria--they have a relaxing and cool place to sit next to an underground waterfall. A great way to refresh during those hot DC summers!

More
Tucked into Rock Creek Park at 16th and Colorado, the bowl of Carter Barron sinks beneath the canopy of trees to set an extremely soothing musical or theatrical experience. The amphitheater is huge -- getting a seat shouldn't be your concern for the free events hosted there periodically throughout the summer -- just getting a seat close enough to see the stage.

More
I went to the Kennedy Center to see a popular Colombian artist perform a FREE concert on the Millennium Stage. We arrived quite early and stood in line, only to be trampled by people when they finally allowed everyone in. The Millennium Stage is basically in a hallway, with no seating, and is very cramped. It's nice that they offer these free, off-the-beaten path shows, and I did enjoy the music, but I wasn't impressed with their handling of the crowd, or the setup. The Center in general showcases a great variety of performers and offers reasonably-priced entertainment. I will visit again, but not the Millenium Stage.

We recently went to a Mystics womens basketball (WNBA) game midweek and I was amazed at the crowd turnout and enthusiasm especially among young girls. The promotion and activities around the game are geared towards this audience, including tee shirts and noise makers and the mascot that comes out occasionally. This is very different from a Wizards game, much more young and gentle. A great place to take kids as it doesn't feel crowded or hectic. "It's fun" said my friend's son.

More
I can't say I'm a big fan of traditional museums, but I nonetheless still enjoyed the National Air and Space Museum for the most part. There are scores of exhibits representing air and space and several historical items (like the spirit of St. Louis). It's been a few years since I've been, but when I went, I do remember getting somewhat bored despite being a fan of this type of stuff. As someone said, this is probably the better of the museums in DC. I would recommend not spending all of your time here but spreading it out among the different landmarks.

More
In late June and early July (including on the Fourth of July), the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage presents a living tapestry across the National Mall, introducing you to the grassroots cultures of different American regions and their cousins abroad. The festival typically focuses on one to four countries or regions; Mali and the United States' own Appalachia, while another year, the Silk Road was explored.

They ar commitment to variety: abstract and representational sculptors, photographers, printmakers and painters have displayed work here. Generally each of the eight to 10 shows per year focuses on a single artist.
