More
Considering almost every museum in DC is free, you might not think to check out the Phillips Collection in Dupont Circle, but it shouldn't be missed. The museum is in a mansion, similar to the Barnes Collection outside of Philadelphia except the building is not quite as extravagant, and the art is all approachable and intimate. There is usually a visiting exhibit, almost all of reknowned artists, but be careful, the place can get packed on weekends.

Project Northstar provides tutoring for students in long-term temporary housing in Washington, DC. Tutoring takes place for about two hours a night most days of the week at six sites around the city. You can pick which site is most convenient for you. Best part is -- Project Northstar works hard to empower the students and incorporates the tutors to create a close-knit, supportive community that the kids seem to really respond to. I've been tutoring there for six months. It's been hard at the times I didn't know how to deal with misbehaving kids, but the staff of Project Northstar was always super helpful. I very much recommend it.

More
The Freer Gallery's combination of Asian and American art provides a little something for everyone. Its collection of 19th- and early 20th-century American art includes the world's largest group of works by James McNeill Whistler, as well as several of Abbott Henderson Thayer's. John Singer Sargent's mastery of the interplay of light and shadow is apparent in the especially fine 'Breakfast in the Loggia.'
The Freer's magnificent collection of Asian art is displayed in rooms dedicated to specific areas. The Islamic arts display includes calligraphy, ceramics and fabulous examples of enameled glass.

This is not just one museum, but several under one name. When visiting DC, make sure you visit these museums. There is the natural history museum, the art museum, air and space musuem...I can't remember all of them, but it is awesome. I love the museum with all the cool fossils, dinosaurs, rocks, etc. You could easily spend several days going through these museums. I think they are all free, but I'm not sure, since it has been a while since I've been here. Don't miss the zoo also, it is free!

More
You're in DC, you've got kids, they need to burn off some energy before bedtime and the museums aren't cutting it. What to do? The zoo. See the real bat cave. Watch an elephant try to mate with a giant dodgeball. If you take the metro, you can really exhaust your kids by getting off at the Zoo stop and walking uphill to the zoo, then, when you leave the zoo, continue to walk uphill on Connecticut to get to the next stop. Try and plan your visit so that it coincides with the birth of cheetah cubs. They are adorable! Not like those crazy kids.

This is a strange place, as it attempts to give you the experience of being in Palestine, with re-creations of Christian holy cites, but it is also a fine, well landscaped garden. If you have some older Christian aunts, this is a must see, but otherwise it may not go over so well. Still, who would have thought?

More
After finally making the time to visit these breathtaking gardens, I'm disappointed it took me so long to get there, but thrilled that such an amazingly landscaped property sits so close to downtown Georgetown. With everything from rock gardens to fountains to roses of all colors to sculptures to hanging gardens, this place is a perfect trip for the entire family. Be sure to call ahead to find out what's in bloom at the time of your visit and consider planning your trip around some of their more impressive flowers, especially the roses in early June.
