Project Northstar provides tutoring for students in long-term temporary housing in Washington, DC. Tutoring takes place for about two hours a night most days of the week at six sites around the city. You can pick which site is most convenient for you. Best part is -- Project Northstar works hard to empower the students and incorporates the tutors to create a close-knit, supportive community that the kids seem to really respond to. I've been tutoring there for six months. It's been hard at the times I didn't know how to deal with misbehaving kids, but the staff of Project Northstar was always super helpful. I very much recommend it.

More
Women for Women was founded by Zainab Salbi in 1993 to support women in war torn countries. This currently includes Bosnia, Rwanda, Iraq, just to name a few. Zainab had just graduated from college when she founded it and two years later, she was honored by the Clintons. She has taken the organization very far, expanding it interationally. She's been on Oprah numerous times, been on the cover of Time, and is truly an inspiring philanthropist.
Women for Women is based out of DC and matches up sponsors who donate a fixed amount each month to sponsor a woman in a war torn country. These funds go to helping women establish themselves and provide for their families. In DC, volunteers can help support the organization. This organization really does a great deal to empower women and rebuild communities one step at a time.

Food & Friends prepares and delivers meals and groceries to folks with life-challenging illnesses such as cancer and HIV/AIDS throughout Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia. It's a very well run and well funded organization. It's got great facilities for preparing the food as well as their delivery vehicles.
The contribution base is very strong and has a steady base of volunteers. There are many opportunities to volunteer with them - special events, delivery, and food prep. They are very welcoming to anyone who wishes to help out.

More
With indoor basketball courts, an outdoor pool, soccer fields, a baseball field, and regularly scheduled field trtips to local city monuments, the summer camp at this Georgetown-based club for kids is a great opportunity for them to enjoy summer while also expanding their horizons. Although some activities tend to get overcrowded at times and the gym does get quite warm due to its lack of air conditioning, kids have a great time at this camp. One additional highlight: weekly cooking lessons that include homemade pasta, brownies, pizza, and, and omelets.

More
As I looked to make my decision about whether or not to apply to law school, I stumbled across this volunteer opportunity which gave me the opportunity to interact with low income wage earners and pro bono attorneys to get a first-hand taste of the practice of law. Although a bit disorganized and spottily attended at times, there are always plenty of people who need the assistance of volunteers. Best part: positions are always available and interest is pretty much the only prerequisite.

More
If you're now or soon will be a DC resident and are looking to get politically involved in your local community, DC Vote is a volunteer organization fighting for Congressional representation for DC residents. My experience has been one of email listserves and occasional events, but you can get as much or as little involved as you would like. Great opportunity for people interested in learning about the District, our nation's political process, and local and national politics.

More
For those that are new to DC and are looking for a way to contribute to the community and to meet other other people new to DC, I would recommend joining Greater DC Cares. It's a nonprofit that organized community events around the area like neighborhood cleanings, work in soup kitchens, kids hospitals, etc, for evenings and weekends. It's also a good way to meet other young people. They send out an email every week for the upcoming events, and you simply respond when you're interested in participating.

More
This is a good club, but it is expensive. The lap pool is terrific, as are the sports facilities in general. If you play racquetball, the courts are outstanding. Excellent steam and saunas as well. Restaurant is not quite what it should be and the spa store is overpriced. Still, it's very attractive and well located. The waiting area is also ok, but you have to change in the locker room with the people using the gym, which does not add much to relaxation.
