My Capital Hill destination 5/17/2006

Ok, I just discovered this place and I already adore it. Both of my visits were pleasant and without wait. The staff is fun and friendly. The food was nice and the wine was great. Beautiful ambiance, if you don't notice the lights flickering. more

Ordered pizzas "to go" 5/14/2006

After reading the reviews of Via Tribunali, it's clear I've been living under a rock. I had heard the pizza was authentic and delicious, but I had no idea what a scene it was. It was Friday night, but after being told we would have to wait an hour we just decided to order the pizza to go. Our order came quickly (within 10 minutes) so we enjoyed the pizza without all the trappings of a scene. The pizza did not disappoint--cooked to perfection. We may try to go back during "off hours" so as to avoid the crowds. more

Good pizza, great ambiance, neat idea but flawed. Food is always good. Service is cause for concern, especially among the women that serve there. I've been told more than once that I wasn't allowed to sit at the bar (apparently they use it for overflow). That could be the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Their Maitre D' seems to have no purpose, other than to wear too loud of a shirt which clashes with all the rest of the staffs. My last visit was fine. But attitude filled and totally flawed as far as service standards are concerned. Seating was fine. Got a nice booth. Greeted. Recognized a bartender I know, said hello. The pleasantries ended there. Two salads (the house) were great. Our plates were took away and the server took the used forks and knifes and set them on the table for us to use for our entree. Umm, NO. I've waited tables, and no matter how lo-brow or hi-brow the place, you do NOT lay a dirty/used fork on the table for further use. You take it away and replace it. Bad, bad, bad. Secondly, they charge a premium for wine and then put it in a water glass. Now that would be fine for the 3 or 4 dollar house wine, but for a 9 dollar glass of wine, not cool. Not cool at all. Not only that, I explained what kind of wine I liked and she recommended something that was nothing like what I asked for. Sigh. Then, on my second glass of wine, I ordered a different variety and do you know what she did? SHE POURED IT INTO MY OLD WINE GLASS that still had remnants of the previous variety in it. Are you serious? My guest and I were shocked. The Vesuvious came. Always good, but frankly, it looked like they used canned mushrooms in it this time, and we picked them all out. They were that weird canned, slightly slimy consistency. They were anything but fresh. So I am not sure what that is all about. Finally, we get the check, and I normally never look at it, but it seemed expensive, so I look and she charged us for a different type of salads than we ordered. She replied, when I mentioned it, "they are the same price." Well, they aren't. Not at all. 3 dollar difference in each. So, she seemed put out that I called her on it. All in all, this place is good, but one bad encounter like this, and they lost my business. more

The pizza is excellent. I'm sure other stuff is good too (the owner is good about quality...also owns Vita down a few doors) but I just come for oven-baked pizza. It's true that it can get crowded, but early birds get served well. The oven is beautiful too. more

Good Food-86 the service 11/20/2005

I've now dined at Via Tribunali 3 times and while the atmosphere and simple but good food warrant 4 stars, the service (specifically the attitude) each visit takes it down a notch to 3 stars. No reservations are taken here so you're in for a wait of about an hour almost no matter what. If you can squeeze into the bar area, order the salumi plate to tide you over. Once seated, pizzas (the lasagna and quattro staggioni pizzas were our favorites) take only about 5 minutes so order as you're ready to eat as there's no waiting for food. If you can get past the pretentiousness at the front of the house, it's worth a visit from time to time. more

authenticity is, without doubt, what's on the menu here. don't be surprised if the pizzas come unsliced... that's how it's like in italy. to lessen the confusion, there's two kinds of prosciutto - "di parma" is the cured one that we typically think of while "cotto" is italian cooked ham. and, oh, definitely have the coffee. more

Go - late 10/20/2005

This place is legit - great service, great decor, great woodfired pizzas, and where else this tasty and classy has a $3.50 house red and white wine option for those of us who like a glass or two of chianti with our pizza but don't want to pay $8 a pop? Go late - it's packed before 10 any night, for good reason. more

Pizza Restaurant 10/8/2005

I think this place has a great feeling. It's really warm, which I love, but it's also super cozy with all the exposed brick and woodwork. The wait can be a little long but they have a bar and the food is worth the wait! Authentic Neopolitan pizzas and all the trimmings. So good. more

Whatever you do, make sure you try a pizza and a calzone -- but bring a small army with an appetite. The Vesuvio calzone is as big as a pie -- something on the order of sixteen inches in diameter -- and the Neopolitan style pizzas are superb. Don't bother trying to walk in on a Saturday night without expecting to wait -- from the get-go, these guys have been every bit as popular as they deserve to be. more

Some of the very best authentic Itallian pizzia I've ever had. Great atmosphere, good wine, and excellent salads. The pepperoni pizza is the best I've ever had. more

Little Italy hidden in Capitol Hill 7/25/2005

What more can you ask for when all ingredients are imported from Italy and kitchen techniques are strictly old-world? When the prosciutto selection makes your mouth water? Of course not forgetting the fire-stoked oven that makes the pizza crust crisp and with a hit of charbroiled flavor. This is a great place to go and feel like you are hiding out in some small corner of Rome. The ambiance is rustic with exposed-brick walls, yellow light, wrought iron accents, and high ceilings. We started out with a salumi misto plate ($12) and followed up with 2 pizzas ($10-$12 per pizza). While I think their wine and spumanti selections were a little over priced, the food more than made up for it. This is a great place to go with a small group or from what I could see a large one in the back hall. A few words to the wise: Be prepared for a wait (the bar beckons). The entire menu is in Italian so be prepared to navigate your way with your waiter if you do not know Italian. Don't be disappointed--they are always closed on Monday and Tuesdays. more
