Best brunch in Williamsburg 12/4/2009

The specials are always good. Great burger. Amazing pork tenderloin. Nice cocktails, long and affordable wine list, extensive selection of beer. It's all a little pricey, but you get what you pay for. Brunch is actually considerably cheaper, it seems. You'll still spend less than you would at Egg. The chef has a vision here. The only reason I don't go here more is because they only take American Express (which is like saying you don't take credit cards at all). Pros: Great food, good service, nice atmosphere Cons: Only take Amex more

not returning here... 1/4/2009

compliments to the chef, good food, especially the gnocchi and the pork chop. only complaint on the food were the portions, not very filling.\r we were quickly seated and then waited almost an hour for our entrees. served one round of drinks when we first were seated and then didn't see our server again until it was time for the bill, which came quickly and was collected just as fast. the thing that bothered me was that the rest wasn't even very busy, empty tables to our right and left. service was simply horrid. i won't return and won't suggest to friends and family. Pros: neighborhood Cons: service, price, portion sizes more

good with caveats 5/26/2008

I've been a regular for years, and the food has changed, but stayed pretty consistent. of note are the fried calamari, meats are their strong point: burgers, hanger steak, pork tenderloin. brunches are pretty light. great outdoor garden. HOWEVER, service isn't their strong point. i'm getting pretty tired of the argentine ""owner"" and his manners. he should be running a club not a restaurant. my husband and i came in waiting to be seated, when a couple of tarts hobbled up. the argentine sat them first and completely ignored us. if you can stomach watching him flutter about chatting up young chicks, your girlfriend or wife and can stand his dismissive attitude toward other customers than Sweetwater would be the perfect place to bring your hot date. what has become of a neighborhood when regulars don't count anymore? more

Thank you, dinner was great 8/23/2007

I just went here for the first time and we had the best meal ever. Calamari, mussels, steak frites - all creative, inspired, cooked to pefection and served attentively (ate at the bar - I know the bartender from another neighborhood spot, she gave perfect, attentive but respectful service.). We had amazing martinis too. My date was super impressed, so highly reccommended!. Pros: ambience, staff, food, drinks, garden patio Cons: can get a tad expensive more

Walked away hungry 8/12/2007

I dined at Sweetwater previously and enjoyed my dining experience. This time though, I was thoroughly disappointed with the overall events of the evening. It was a special night and I was anticipating a good meal. First off, it took over 20 minutes for our appetizer to show up. The waitress did not make an effort to apologize for the wait or bring us bread which was given to every table surrounding us. Secondly, it took another 40 minutes for our entrees to arrive. Upon arrival, my cornish hen was RAW! Because the lighting was low, I had already taken a bite before I realized it was undercooked while the outside was burned. We had to work to get our waitress' attention before we could inform her of the mistake. I was extremely sickened by this and did not want a replacement entree. The asparagus that was served with the hanger steak was the bottom of the stalk which normally goes in the garbage. No management attempted to apologize for the long wait and the raw food. Finally, when we requested the check, the server disappeared so we left our money on the table and walked away hungry! Pros: Nice atmosphere Cons: unattentive service more

Best Steak! 8/9/2007

The steak here is amazing, the staff is very efficient and friendly, the wine selection rocks and the ambiance works for a romantic dinner for two or a night with some friends Pros: Steak, friendly staff Cons: The rest of the food is ""okay"", sometimes service is real slow more

light lunch 5/13/2007

Stumbled onto this place the other day after a day of bike riding and looking for a light lunch. Since I?m a lover of variety and sharing, we decided on 4 appetizers: garlic shrimp, roasted avocado w/ tomatoes, provolone rice meatballs w/ sausage ragu, and arugula salad w/ pecans green apples, and camembert ? everything was delicious. I especially liked the back patio which gets plenty of sun and shade on a nice day. The only thing that was a bummer was that this place is cash only. O well, I?m definitely coming back to try other things on the menu. Pros: food Cons: cash only more

great food, argentine owned so good wines, nice outdoor dining garden/patio 5/6/2007

the place is this cozy, low lit place, with a very ecletic crowd. we had the mussles for appetizer, delicious with coconut based sauce. entrees were the burger on english muffin- good but nothing out of ordinary. duck breast was killer with feta cheese and grilled tomatoes. monk fish was awesome with some awesome greens. we had a bottle of mil piedras melbac from argentina, $35, and a lychee martini $10. the wine was great, the martini just okay. the flourless chocolate cake was awesome. 3 people ate and drank well for $55 each after tip and tax, and I was full and happy till the next morning! the place was very alive, I'm coming back. It was my first time in brooklyn/williamsburg and i'm coming back to this place for sure. Pros: good food, wine, ambience Cons: service was a little slow when the place was crowded more

NICE STAFF! 10/27/2006

The waitresses at Sweatwater are SURPRISINGLY nice for Williamsburg. They are all good at their job & seem comfortable & happy with where they work. It is such a refreshing change to have good food being served to you by the young, hip & trendy WITHOUT an attitude. Other restauranteurs in the neighborhood should send their waitstaff in there to observe! The food is great too! Pros: great service. Late hours Cons: a bit dark. Booths are a bit close together. Would not be good for a large person. more

Mime is delusional 9/4/2006

I live in the neighborhood and have frequented this place ever since it was a punk bar. I love sweetwater! The atmosphere is so inviting, the food is beyond amazing, and the staff is really cool and attentive (not to mention pretty damn goodlooking). I hear they went through yet another chef and his specials are some of the best food i've had in williamsburg. things are pretty cheap, i had a yummy $7 malbec... And the garden is gorgeous. Overall quite the find! Pros: Banofi, Specials, Garden more

A Big Thumbs Down 4/30/2006

I went on a weeknight evening when it wasn't very crowded - the service was terrible (10 minutes went by before they even took a drink order, the food took forever to come out), they didn't have two of their wine selections and the waiter brought me a bottle that was barely so-so and was 6$ more than I wanted to spend, the food had a poor flavor and quality to it AND there was a burning smell that kept waifting out of the kitchen. A really bad experience for 100$ tab for two. Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Poor Service, Substandard Quality, No Credit Cards more

Superb dining experience! 4/2/2006

I highly recommend Sweetwater. The ambience is typically Left bank bistro, where you can find a romantic table, where you can hide or dine with a group of friends. The menu is full of great surprises laced with far away spices. Try the pork loin or the hanger steak; all fabulous. The skate fish melts in your mouth...Dont forget to top it all with the Food of the Gods, this exquisite marriage of chocolate sauce, souffle/cake and ice cream. Overall, it is always a superb dining experience, at affordable price. Enjoy! Pros: Inexpensive, Food, Ambience more

Good food, casual place 3/16/2006

I ate there on a Tuesday night, it was fairly quite, and great for couples or a group of friends. The wait staff was attentive and laid back. The food was prepared promptly and was excellent. I suggest the beet and goat cheese salad. That rocked. And the Pork loin was superb. I was very satisfied and plan to go there again. Nice place. Pros: Food Cons: Music more

What happened? 1/9/2006

my wife and I went in last weekend, and I'd like to know what happened? We were in twice before, and really enjoyed everything, but this time the place was chaotic! The waitress was sweet and did all she could to make us feel comfortable. She looked mortified by the guy at the table next to us that was obviously very drunk and NOT WEARING A SHIRT! We could not believe that the owner only laughed and continued serving him drinks. I can deal with their dog running around the dining room, but shirtless drunks? The food took forever, and was edible at best. Our waitress told us they had a new chef, so I guess the guy from New Orleans is gone, but the frat house vibe, dirty silverware, dogs and drunks turned us off long before the food had a chance to. We will not be going back. Cons: Drunks, dogs, food more

Very poor treatment 11/16/2005

A friend and I had finished dinner early on a Tuesday evening and were ordering successive rounds of beers, when a man in a dirty sweat jacket and jeans, without introducing himself or saying anything in the least gracious, began regularly assaulting our table, indicating he wanted us to leave. Apparently this guy was the manager! I understand restaurants need to ""turn tables,"" but instead of an introduction and polite suggestion, we got a sharp-tongued accusation! We left fresh beers on the table and vowed never to go back. He completely ruined our night. more

double trouble 11/6/2005

I have visited Sweetwater's twice, and both times have been sorely disappointed. My friends have spoken highly of the spot, but I am beginning to question their judgement. Granted, both times I went for brunch, but eggs are pretty hard to screw up. Yet, Sweetwater managed. The first time, I was impressed with the ambience and wine, but waited a good 20 minutes to order, then another HOUR for my food. When it finally came, my meal arrived first, my girlfriend's food a full 20 MINUTES later. Worse, her order, a simple eggs over medium, came out cold and soggy, accompanied by burnt homefries and burnt bacon. Our server could hardly look us in the eye, and was actively dismissive when we asked where our meal could be. Yesterday, I went again, and again was given burnt, dry food -- the flavor was seared right out of the meat. Disgraceful. Pros: Atmospheric Cons: Poor service, Burnt food more
