The food was good overall. The lamb could have been cooked a little more. The ravioli plate was small, not enough for the money. My friend wasn't even partially full after eating...

Best calamari!!! 11/4/2010

This place has the famous sand floor and tropical theme park vibe but the seafood is no joke. The calamari is the BOMB and the peel and eat shrimp is just like being in Georgia. The service is attentive and super cute. I love this place, it's so much fun, and I am planning to have my bday party here. Only wish the salmon was wild and that they had better salads and veggies, it wouldn't kill them to add a few of those to their menu. more

The clam chowder is back! 5/7/2009

So I decided to give this place one more chance since they always seem to run out of my favorite, the clam chowder. I went there last week with a couple of friends and what a huge improvement! Not only did they have the chowder back, but was greeted by a really nice manager named Nicholas who gave us great service that evening. I'm very happy to see that things are starting to improve at the Surf Bar. They are listening to their customers now and will go out of their way to make them happy. Pros: Tasty chowders more

Freaky new Manager makes regulars run away! ! ! 4/28/2009

Oh wow, don't even know where to start. We are regulars of Surfbar since 5 years now and we had seen many awesome people of the SB stuff come and go, but lately things changed a lot: Pros: Our favourite neighborhood bar! Cons: Get this swedish ""Manager"" out of this great Place! more

good burger/good beer 4/20/2008

Surf bar is pretty chill in a good way.Service was a little slow, and the food took way longer than it should have, but the burger was real good. They were stingy with the fries though. The menu has a lot of seafood on it, and some unique dishes as well. The place itself is pretty cool, good music and decor. more

great hangover food 12/18/2006

Drinking like a fish the night before? Massive headache? Wondering where you are and what happened? Well that is how I felt when I went here for breakfast. I had the lobster omelet and it came with all these extras... potatoes, greens, a piece of corn on the cob, grilled tomato wedge. Presentation was awesome, waitstaff was friendly (and sympathetic?), and the neat thing is the decor. As soon as you walk in, you'll know what I mean. Pros: fluffy omelet, lots of choices, big portions Cons: sand? (i liked it); food seemed to come kind of slowly but worth the wait more

Surf's Up 11/14/2005

Awesome chowders and fish specials. The ambiance is great, especially in the summer when you can linger over drinks in the garden long after you've finished dinner and dessert. The tropical drinks are always fun, especially when you're walking on a sand-covered floor surrounded by surfboards & seascapes. Definitely one of my favorite places to take friends for a laid-back time - it's cool enough to be a Williamsburg hangout, but not so cool that you can't get in on weekends because of all the bridge-and-tunnelers. Pros: Seafood, Atmosphere, Tropical drinks more

Huh? 10/9/2004

This place WAS Italian when it first opened about three years ago and it was very good. We went back recently and I am not sure what happened, but it's a disaster. It's half fish shack/surfer bar and half Italian food, which does not work! The service was awful and the food was terrible. Skip this place. more

disappointing 7/1/2004

Thought the setting is great, the service was horrendous and inept and the menu was confusing. The fish of the day can be prepared five different ways according to the menu, but fails to mention that those five different ways are just five different sauces that come out with the whole, deep fried fish. Under no circumstance should you order the fish ""taco"" which is more like a big mess of a burrito. Stick to the drinks. Pros: Outdoor Garden more

Food with style 1/28/2004

Unlike some of the overly hipster restaurants on Bedford, the laidback atmosphere is the crowning glory to this little place. Food is great and varied (the calamari and spinach ravioli were delicious), kind of a seafood shack you'd find up in Maine with New York style. Service was good but relaxed, and in the course of our meal we heard everything from Pete Yorn and the Pixies to Akinele and L.L. Cool J. It made for a great time. Pros: laidback, good music, great food more

Nice place 10/7/2002

The food was good overall. The lamb could have been cooked a little more. The ravioli plate was small, not enough for the money. My friend wasn't even partially full after eating. The caeser salad was great. The fried calamari was even better! And they give lots of free bread. The waitress forgot to serve some drinks and was pretty ditzy. The atmosphere was nice but it was a little too dark. Pros: good food, ok portions Cons: horrible service, bad menu, too dark more

Best Mojito 8/6/2002

My Roomie and I went here and we had a blast. Great food and fast service and great recommendations by the staff. and WOW what a mojito and best coffee. more

Tasty, Charming, Inexpensive 7/30/2002

Carmaya has an innovative menu (Parmasan ice cream for an appetizer?) at VERY reasonable prices. I recommend going on a warm, summer night because the outdoor garden is incredibly romantic -- it even has manicured grass underneath the tables! I loved my entire meal from the creative, summer cocktail to the appetizers to the main course, a wonderful spinach ravioli -- it was truly delicious! One improvement could be made in their service. Although fairly attentive, we couldn't derive a lot of information out of our waiter. Other than that, it was a spectacular meal for 3 people -- with drinks(3), appetizers (2), main courses (3) and desserts (2), it came to about $80 -- not bad for an Italian meal that I thought was in the same ballpark as Lupa. Pros: Inexpensive, Romantic Garden, Great Food! more

where's the waiter? 7/7/2002

This could have been a really excellent dining experience, the food and atmosphere are great, exceptional given the price. If only there was a waiter for our section. we had to ask for everthyng after waiting and noticed it wasn't only our table. the hostess and busboy were great. if we had a waitstaff for our table it would have been nice. sevice was non-existent. the wine list is varied and reasonably priced. the pasta dishes delicious and desserts were impressive and well thought out. need to hire more staff. more
