Great Casual Dining, But needs sum season! 12/24/2009

I visited Night of the Cookers, Christmas Eve 2009 with my best friend. I heard about this place from my boss as well as my best friend and they were talking ALOT about how good the food was but I was not impressed, yet it was'nt horrible. I ordered the fried chicken with mac and cheese and a side order of Candied Yams. The portion size was great, chicken very moist but it lacked so much seasoning, Parts of it lacked taste, at times I was biting into pure oil and fried flour, I had to ask for Salt, Pepper and ketchup to spice it up. The Mac & Cheese very bland, a mixture of sharp cheddar used to sharply; Candy Yams was a bit undercooked (just slightly). My friend had the blackened Catfish which she claims was too salty on this visit, but her collard greens were 2 DIE for. We both had sum Fuzzy Muzzy drinks that were too strong for a bunch of weak 21 yr olds new to the alcohol game lol, but they were still yummy after we watered it down. I gave this place 4 stars because the food wasnt horrible (after all we did clean our plates) and the atmosphere is relaxing and calm. Dim lights, elegant seating, great neighborhood, No loud noises, sensual music, good prices and superb service from the staff (Top of the Line, honestly). I would definetly go back for any occasion and try there other dishes. So run to Night of the Cookers now!!!!!!! Pros: Great atmosphere, Superb Service Cons: Drinks to strong, Food was a bit dry more

IGNORE ANY REVIEW FROM 2007 AND EARLIER... 8/10/2008

This restaurant use to be so good but since about 2007 the entire setup is just ridiculous. The food was unbelievably HORRIBLE. Cold, dry and bland. All of the silverware and glasses have stains on them. The drinks are disgusting and the service...I can't even begin to talk about the service. The neighborhood regulars are no more and have to say...this place is now known for having the WORST food in Brooklyn. Pros: It's a local spot and you don't have to worry about reservations...because no one else is going there. Cons: Bad food, watered down drinks, dirtysilverware, slow service...not sure what's left. more

Best place for HORRIFIC service 5/18/2007

I visited on May 18, 2007 with two friends for a birthday celebration. The decor was very nice, but the service was awful. The waiter never said his name and was unavailable throughout the meal. The radio was too loud and so, we had to strain to talk to each other. The mac and cheese tasted like cardboard. The waiter offered neither an apology nor a substitute when he was told abut the quality of the meal. Then, he had the nerves to have added a 20% gratuity to the bill, which I refused to pay. After waiting 15 minutes, we had to walk our check to the register because the waiter never returned. I would not return to Night of the Cookers and I do not recommend it. This place should be avoided like the plague. There is never an excuse for poor service because there are so many other choices. Pros: Clean Cons: You are not valued as a customer. more

really good food 5/26/2006

this is the best food i've had in fort greene. the collard greens were the tastiest, better than at mobay or ruthie's, and the best i've had ever, with just the right amount of seasoning. the bbq chicken was very tender, moist and perfectly seasoned. the cornbread was also amazing--perfect texture, slightly crusty on top and bottom, nice sweetness. stevie wonder (the young stevie) playing in the background, it was really nice. veliis next door may have the decor and the hipness, but the food is god-awful. chez oskar is also over-rated, and cafe lafayette has gone downhill. this is the best food in the neighborhood, and i'm glad i found it. Pros: good food, friendly more

I LOVE ROBERTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 10/16/2005

OH MY GOD!!!So, A couple of friends of mine decided to go out a couple of nights ago and we decided to try out Night Of The Cookers. Let me tell you that the most memorable thing wasn't the food, which was awesome, not the drinks ( Purple Rain BABY!!!), no, It was the service. One person in Particular. Name is Roberto. This guy was amazin'. The amazin stuff began when he got to the table. We began to ask him questions to see how well he knew the menu to which he answered all and then Said "" What Are you writing? A Book?"". He took the time to check on us about 5 or 6 times that night and we never felt abandoned. The food was excellent. P.S. There is a guy who works with ROBERTO which he Knicknames SIDESHOW BOB. You'll Know him when you see him. Pros: Great Service, Great Food, Good Music more

Good Food, Good Staff, Good environment 8/2/2005

I went to this restaurant for the first time this summer, and I had A GREAT time. I took a friend with me who also never been there, and we both were impressed. First, we were seated in the room near the band. I notice how the folks at the bar were howling and cheering the band on, which reminded me of being at one of those vintage jazz club. Our food arrived. I had a stuffed salmon and it was EXCELLENT! The mac and cheese is to die for. You didn't hear me, IT'S TO DIE FOR! The greens were also good. After the band stopped playing, they threw on some house music. Nice. I'm telling you this place is happening. Pros: Good food, Nice staff, Nice vibe Cons: None, None, None more

nightmare of the cookers 5/30/2005

i went back to this restaurant during the Dance Africa weekend at Brooklyn Academy of Music - never again - the service was subpar and so was the food. what i hated was the fact that i ordered a lemonade that cost $2.50 thinking that it would be homemade, nope it was probably Minute Maid or Tropicana. i also didn't like how they had the nerve to add gratuity to the tip to a party of two. i decided to go to Night of the Cookers because my cousin was hungry. she had wanted to McDonald's; i should have listened. we both ordered barbeque chicken, with macroni and cheese, candied yams and spinach. i kid you not: the chicken was simply boiled with barbeque sauced poured over it, the yams tasted like the can it came from, and the mac 'n cheese was watery. Pros: Live Music, Location Cons: Service, Food more

Good for a drink and appetizers 5/18/2005

If you are looking for a place to have a few drinks and good appetizers this is a nice little place to go. Fortunately there are other places in the hood. The service is not that great and a little unprofessional for my taste. I have eaten at this establishment for a while and the service still hasnt improved. But overall the food is decent and so are the drinks Pros: inexpensive, tasty food, convenient Cons: service, loud, dark more

surreal brunch 6/27/2004

It's not so much that I'm angry because I'm too baffled to be angry, but I think that others should be aware of what to expect. I ordered steak and eggs (steak rare, eggs over easy) with a side of grits and a mimosa. The mimosa was warm, steak was well-done and the eggs were weird. The whites were scrambled and tossed in were these orange rounds that I assumed were yolk, but turned out to be cheese. Very strange. Just thought you should know. Also, they added the gratuity to the total even though there were only two of us, but I didn't realize it until I already paid another tip and walked out the door. Pros: large space, live jazz for brunch Cons: , gets orders wrong, secret gratuity added more

U B Da Judge 5/13/2003

Where do i begin. I love the whole jazz concept but it is simply, to loud for the space. The drinks are a great value, but the martini glasses, or as I like to call them shot glasses with a stem is unacceptable. The waiters are to laid back. I have been frequenting cookers since it opened years back and I've seen very little turnover in the staff so I am assuming they don't have to do a good job. Hey judge for yourself, I just think there is serious room for improvment, especially since there are many other restaurants old and new in the neighbor who are on their game. Pros: space, people, drinks Cons: noisy, laid-back staff more

Sophisticated Soul 10/30/2002

A stylish down home dining experience in Southern Soul Food brings a touch of Harlem Renaissance to a newly burgeoning bohemia that promises to be the best of Brooklyn's second coming. The Grilled Portobello Salad is a great starter and plenty for two. The Blackened Seafood Platter, with Catfish, Salmon and Shimp, is a savory success, especially with Candied Yams and Collard Greens on the side. Try the Bourbon Chicken with same sides, too, for a taste o' ragin' Cajun. The Chef's Special Lamb Shank with Asparagus is one of the most succulent I've ever tasted. For a perfect finish, you've got to try the Key Lime or the Pecan Pie. Night of the Cookers is a perfect end to a day at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, Prospect Park or the Brooklyn Museum of Art and a MUST for preshow diners en route to BAM. Pros: Moderately Priced, Hearty Portions, Warm Atmosphere Cons: Limited Parking, Crowded, Dinner Din more

Decent Soul Food 6/21/2002

This place is reasonably priced and has a nice selection of soul food classics but the quality is merely good not great. The service is maybe a little bit too laid back. Overall it's worth a trip. Pros: Nice space, affordable Cons: so-so food quality, laid back service more
