Facinating Movie House 4/27/2010

Hands down, this is bar far one of the best movie theaters I've been to in Chicago, or anywhere else around the country. The theater is very old, but has been renovated in such a way that you could easily believe you are back in the 1920s. They show the most recent foreign movies, as well as old classics. For a while, they show old classics like Mommy Dearest, or rare comedies such as You Can't Stop the Music by the Village People. If you are going on a first date, this is the place to impress her by showing her that you have a little artistic flare. Music Box is also next to all the bars and restaurants on South Port. I might sound a little biased, but I have been going to this place for years and still love it! more

Cool 5/27/2006

This theater has little lights on the ceiling to make it look like you are under the stars when the rest of the lights are out. This is a charming theater with some history on Southport corridor. I will always go here for the unique feel and good service from the employees. more

A throwback to the old days! 5/13/2006

I have always loved going to this very special movie house. This theatre is one of a kind. I love what they do here. The inside is old time classic beauty and charm. It's kind of cheeky and doesn't take itself too seriously. The have some fantastic movie choices including cult films, cartoons, film festivals, underground flicks, you name it. And some super nice people work here. You have to visit whenever you get a chance. more

Different 5/12/2006

I like this place, because it is decorated well. They put little lights on the ceiling to give a feel like you are outside... might be a stretch, but it is cool. This place is reasonable and there are plenty restaurants around it to get dinner and desert. Perfect place to stop in at for a night on the town. more

Music Box 3/30/2006

Independent films, film festivals, film noir.and a pipe organ are just some of the reasons to check this place out. You may want to visit here because of it's architecture and see how they have restored this theater. For some folks it's the hip neighborhood that draws them here. The Music Box is surrounded by clubs and restaurants and is not far from Wrigely Field. They don't have a lot and street parking can be scarce, so keep that in mind so you are not late for your show. more

Watch movie inside under the stars 3/5/2006

A romantic place to see a movie. It's got a vintage Chicago feel and sparkly stars overhead. The seating is comfortable and the people are nice. They often show independent or old films, which add to the romanticism of the place. I would say that their prices are high, but then comparably speaking, you get what you pay for. It's worth it to treat a special someone to a movie here. more

Great Venue 12/6/2005

The Music Box is a really neat old theater. There is a stage with curtains where the movie screen is. It's really cool to go into this place and sit down and watch a movie. It's sort of like seeing a play with the curtains and such. The beauty of the place makes up for the less than great sound system. more

lovely old theatre 8/21/2005

This is a beautiful old theatre with lots of architecture and decoration. The movies may have an intermission at which time a piano player entertains the audience. Also has a small side theater for smaller audiences. Look up when the room gets dark and you'll see stars on the ceiling as well as the screen. more

Ornate and hip movie theater 8/15/2005

The Music Box shows a variety of independent films that you won't find in your typical chain cinema. The interior decor of the theater is pretty ornate, similar to the Oriental Theater in Milwaukee if you've been there (although I personally prefer the Oriental better...). It's a fun change from the regular movie scene. Tickets are a bit spendy at $10, but that's only a dollar more than a regular movie really. I'd definitely recommend it if you're looking for a different setting, and you're more interested in independent films. more

Music Box Theatre 8/10/2005

Known for it's old-fashioned, un-multiplex decor, this theater is great for finding foreign, independent, classic, or documentary films. It's been a favorite venue at the Chicago International Film Fest. Michael Moore premiered his Oscar-winning 'Bowling for Columbine' in the U.S. here. There is a LIVE organist at certain shows, a great touch for setting the mood. more

Music Box Theatre 8/7/2005

There's not much to say about the Music Box Theatre other than it's simply awesome. An old theatre with a big screen, devoid of the cramped feelings of some of the multiplexes in the area. This is more of a place for movie lovers, or anyone who enjoys the nostalgia places like this offer. Usually showing independents, they also offer midnight movies and matinees on the weekends, the latter typically being something you might take your kids to. more

It's a destination, not just a movie theatre 8/5/2005

The Music Box Theatre is a converted old theater that now shows films and other types of shows. Because it used to be a theater, it still retains the stage space which allows some creative intepretations... for example, every Halloween, the Music Box stages the Rocky Horror Picture Show with live-action on the stage and audience participation. Let's put it this way - this isn't the place to go to for the latest in projection technology, sound, or blockbusters - but it's definitely an experience. more

Independent Flicks 7/19/2005

Music Box is probably one of my favorite theaters to go to in the city. The theater is re-modeled and it looks beautiful. You really feel like you are in the old times. They play great classic films and indie films if you are into that. It's really neat because sometimes they show films with organ music. They also have a discount card that you should get if you go there frequently. more

A classic theater showing classic films 5/17/2005

This theater is not to be missed if you're tired of seeing bad studio movies at the Loews multi-plex near you. The "night sky" ceiling is worthy of a good long stare as is Italian/Spanish facade along the walls. They've got midnight shows on weekends which can be a lot of fun as well. I also recommend showing up early or staying late and enjoying a pint or two of Boddingtons at Cullens next door. Good times at a classic theater! more
