Just off North Avenue is this great Italian place that offers a lovely outdoor patio seating, complete with huge umbrellas for the sun or rain, and gasburners for those cool fall nights. (It's enclosed, trust me, you stay warm). The pizzas are great (woodburning oven), the risottos (3 kinds) are phenomenal (love the one with mushrooms) and the pastas are fresh made with great sauces. I don't know what they put in that garlicky-creme spread they serve at dinner but I could eat it plain, straight out of the container! One of the best tiramisu desserts in the city, but try the tortoni, a spumoni ice creme with rum, almonds and whipped creme--fabulous!

I recently bought a very nice sofa and sleeper sofa (not the ones that pull out) from their clearance center on on West Addison. The floor models are in good shape, with a few scratches. The sales lady was very nice, helped us decide which pieces we wanted and gave us a very good deal. Where they get you is delivery, which can go to $150 depending on how much you spend. If you've got a few friends with a van or want to even rent one, you come out much cheaper.

Ever been in a room of coffee barrels? Almost every kind of coffee and tea you can think of is available at this place. They are shipped from a warehouse in the city. The beans sold by the pound, and they grind them for you if needed. Tea lovers are not left out either; they have loose tea and accessories(infusers, etc.) to go with it. The decor is rather minimal, not a lot of walking room, but there are some cute 'novelty' items for sale too!

Don't know why I love storefronts that are below street level. There's something about looking down into a store that makes it more interesting. The bookstore was great long before Borders made bookstores cool. A tiny coffee station is all it offers the lounger, plus a few chairs, but the selection is amazing and they will order special requests. The U of C uses it for writers and speakers often.

I'm a fickle hair customer, rarely attending the same salon more than a few times, but Sandra's always does such a great job on microbraids! A small salon a few blocks off King Drive, it's by no means fancy. Sandra and her daughters and friends are from African (Ivory Coast?) and work so tirelessly it puts me to shame. They offer a variety of braiding services.

This is the only other gallery besides Nicole Gallery that is owned and operated by an African-american, and showcases art from people of color. The most recent opening featured work by a Hispanic artist, Luis Gonzalez. It is rather small, but the almost 'mural-sized' works make the room appear huge! Local restaurants take advantage of openings to showcase their food and advertise. Brilliant idea!

I always loved Goodman's old theatre off Columbus Avenue behind the Art Institute--great talent, set apart from all the others. But it's new digs on Dearborn in what is now Chicago's official 'theatre district' houses 2 fabulous theatres, and who wants to walk 6 blocks after dinner anyway? Local talent, Broadway plays, a traditional 'Christmas Carol' (and a new one with a gospel-influenced theme) all put a great face on theatre in Chicago! Check Hottix for same day discounted tix if your budget is tight.

This bar along the busy, trendy strip of Lincoln Avenue is the anti-yuppie spot. The TVs might show the Cubs game when it's on, but afterwards it's the odd B-flick drowned out by the punk/rock jukebox. Live performances throughout the week. Upstairs is another bar and a pool table. A friendly, laidback crowd, a good if LOUD alternative to the typical hangout.

Rumor has it Al Capone once owned this club on the northside. A classic jazz club, complete with long, curved bar, huge booths and small upclose stage hosts some of Chicago's (and the country's) finest talent. Aficionados will recognize Kurt Elling, Patricia Barber and Von Freeman among the regulars. Drinks are reasonable, offset by the $14 cover for headliners, $7 after midnight (Sabretooth is awesome). On weekends, loud, smoky, standing room only--what every jazz lover treasures!
