My favorite place for shopping in Chicago...Hard Boiled is one of a dying breed. A true independent store. The staff is the owner, and he loves what he sells. He's turned his passion for music and movies into a store catering to those of us who enjoy the obscure. Inquire about something no one else has heard of, and chances are you'll get an answer. I know it sounds too good to be true, but if you're an independent music and/or film lover, Hard Boiled is the only place you should be shopping.

A local fixture, Murphy's is the best place in the area for hot dogs, corn dogs and other things of the sort. A great staff really enhances the experience of eating in this simple, kind of divey establishment, which provides a nice contrast to the eateries around the corner. The food is great, prepared fresh while you wait, and they have some of the best fries in the city.

There's not much to say about the Music Box Theatre other than it's simply awesome. An old theatre with a big screen, devoid of the cramped feelings of some of the multiplexes in the area. This is more of a place for movie lovers, or anyone who enjoys the nostalgia places like this offer. Usually showing independents, they also offer midnight movies and matinees on the weekends, the latter typically being something you might take your kids to.

A knowledgeable, friendly staff made this a great place to research some of my available options when shopping for a new computer. They were able to help narrow down my choices and give me a little guidance and direction towards making a purchase, even though I ended up doing so elsewhere. It's nice to have these little establishments around the neighborhood to contrast with the large brick and mortar chains that provide at best half the level of service.

Charming doesn't even begin to describe this wonderful eatery tucked away on Clark St. From the name, you can probably guess that crepes are the main menu item, but there are a few other things as well. The food was great, and fairly priced, and the entire staff was a joy to interact with. Not only was our server friendly, but a few times she started to come over, but noticed we were in the middle of a conversation and waited a few minutes so as not to interrupt, which I found extremely courteous and refreshing. Don't be fooled by the boring bar/cafe look when you first enter - the main dining room is in the back, and beyond that is a quaint and cozy outdoor area, great for cool summer evenings. Overall, this is a great little place that everyone in Chicago should know and love.

The Empty Bottle is everything a live music venue should be - small, intimate dirty, hot and dark. It's slightly uncomfortable, but in an appealing way. It's a great place to see bands playing live music. Nothing more. You won't see fancy Vegas type productions. You won't find ridiculously overpriced drinks. You won't find anything except a basic, no frills bar/club. I am especially fond of this place because they often cater to more experimental bands, which I happen to be a big fan of. If you're looking for something to do, and aren't afraid of being introduced to some new music and spending the evening in a gloriously smoky, dingy bar, you should stop reading and get over there.

A Chicago indie rock institution, I somehow knew of this place even before moving here last year. Upon my first visit, it was mostly what I expected - tons of music to choose from, and a relatively courteous staff. Carrying both used and new compact discs and movies, Reckless is easily the place to go when you're looking for bargains or to find that obscure song you heard on the radio, but can't quite remember who it was by. The only complaint I have is that the selection of actual records is a little disappointing, but I suppose this is true of most 'record' stores these days. But if you're like most and enjoy the small plastic discs you can put in a computer, Reckless is probably the place for all your music needs.

Honestly, I"m not sure why Navy Pier exists. I suppose it's fashioned after boardwalks, but it's really nothing more than a poorly ventilated indoor mall, with the same fast food you can get everyplace else. There is the Children's Museum and Imax there, a few rides outside, but the only reason I can see for visiting the Pier is if you've done everything else in Chicago and just want to go someplace new. If you're a tourist, you can find the same toursity stuff elsewhere in the city, without having to be in a toursity place. If you want to see boats, you can go to practically any spot along the lake. Save your time and your money and experience the city.

Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art delivers exactly what you'd expect. It's a little on the small side, but the exhibits are typically excellent - interesting work that is nicely laid out. No surprises with the museum's atmosphere, though I do find it a bit more welcoming than other museums. If you're planning a visit, be sure to consider Tuesday nights, not only for the free admission to the museum, but also the live jazz and drinks out back. In the summer (when not too hot) this provides a nice, relaxing, casual evening out.
