Simple but fancy 5/17/2009

Being inside cafe andree is like being in the center of french cuisine. Foods are very nice and I like when they serve it on time and hot. Price is kinda unfriendly though. Pros: Foods always served good and hot Cons: Not that cheap though more

Have had a better breakfast at McDonalds 9/30/2007

Quite ordinary to say the least. Maybe dinner is better than breakfast, but the waiter seemed as though he had been up all night. The toast was cold. The jam was Smuckers in a little plastic container that we had to ask for twice (and still didn't come). Ordered coffee that didn't come. Water arrived when we were preparing to leave. Cute spot, great food 9/28/2007

I've been trying to give up red meat I think the steak here was good enough to be my last. Fabulous. And the preparation was equal to the steak itself. I went with colleagues and they all praised the tapas. This is a really nice little room, and service was extremely attentive yet unobtrusive. Wine list was okay, but the qulity of the food was exceptional, especially relative to price. more

Cozy, Quaint Space 4/30/2007

I was recently traveling to SF for business and ventured out for a quiet dinner by myself at Cafe Andree (based on the good reviews I read). I was pleasantly surprised by the quaint little restaurant located in Hotel Rex and the attentive, but unimposing service. I had a wonderful churrasco steak (tender slices of beef atop trumpet mushrooms and vegetable ragout - braised to perfection, wonderfully sweet and tender chunks of a variety of root vegetables, interspersed with fragrant mushrooms) accompanied by a glass of pinot noir. I would definitely return to this place in my future visits to the City. One interesting thing of note is that there were a lot of women dining alone in this place - I suppose I can see why - good food, quiet, peaceful atmosphere, but still worthy of notice. Hidden Gem in Union Square 3/7/2007

I was shopping in Union Square with my girlfriend when we stumbled on a hidden gem on Sutter Street! It was this quaint restaurant, called Cafe Andree. It's an intimate restaurant with awesome food. The staff were very friendly, too. It's great to have a restaurant that's so close to Union Square and yet away from the hustle and bustle of shoppers. The food is California cuisine and really gooooood and unique. The price is so reasonable, too! You really can't go wrong. Why go to Scala's where each menu item is overpriced? Great place for dinner after a day of shopping 2/19/2007

I looked up this place on citysearch for a birthday dinner and the restaurant lived up to its 9.8 rating in all respects! The setting was very quaint - library/study room-like - and the service was professional, courteous, and efficient. We shared many small plates and each dish was flavorful and distinct. All of the ingredients seemed fresh and of good quality and the variety of menu items was also a plus. Definitely worth a visit. Pros: conveniently located, excellent food more

A wonderful gastronimical experience 10/14/2006

We arrived early at Cafe Andree as a party of three. The staff was attentive and we were quickly situated. The space is small and cozy as previously described. There was music playing (french) which added a to the atmosphere, but was a trifle on the louder side. I would have preferred a lower volume which would have made for a nice background hum. Overall the volume was comfortable and pretty good for conversations. Pros: Location to Union Square, food, half servings of wine available Cons: Parking was harder to find, thin wine selection more

The service was very professional--our waitress did not remove any plates until we were all finished which shows great manners. I am always last to finish and feel rushed when the plates of others are removed. Cafe Andree got it right! I wish more restaurants in San Francisco would return to this level of etiquette. The food was delicious--beautiful presentation, generous portions and amazing flavors. Some our favorite dishes included the duck enchilada, the fish of the day and the chocolate cake for dessert. Attentive service and superb food 7/3/2006

Argentinian/French food to die for. The empanadas and sweet corn soup were lovely, and every main dish we tried was fabulous. The place is extremely quiet--everyone speaks in low voices, and there's no music in the background. However, the place is perfect for a relaxed evening of conversation and exceptional food. The restaurant is in the Hotel Rex, which is an amazing hotel. I highly recommend Cafe Andree and Hotel Rex. I was most impressed with this restaurant considering we usually go to more expensive and stuffy places in the city. This place has class as well as great service and great food. All the servers were very pleasant and very accomodating. The food was great. Keep in mind that they are tapas (smaller portions) so some of the reviews that you read rant on the portion size without realizing what they are. I prefer the tapas because you can try a bit of everything on the menu and I loved everything. The wine list is not huge, but there is quite a selection that you can chose from. AND, most importantly, the wines were NOT over priced at all. Pros: nice atmosphere, quiet, affordable wines Cons: nothing to rant about here. more

delicious dinner in an intimate setting 5/4/2006

Deciding where to dine when in Union Square is difficult with so many over priced options. The answer? Cafe Andree located within the HotelRex! Location is great since it is near the shops and its quaint size allows for an intimate dinner with one's companion. The menu is diverse and the description of each dish made my mouth water. We started with Arugula salad. My daughter ordered the Rib Eye and I, the Polenta. Both were delicious. Dessert=chocolate torte. Yum. In addition, the service was superb. The waitress was very knowledgable about the wine list and her suggestion of a bold red to compliment the Rib Eye was perfect. Our experience at Cafe Andree made me realize that you can find an affordable, delicious and convenient meal when in Union Square. Not Worth the Money 4/27/2006

I had dinner tonight @ Cafe Andree for the first time and was unimpressed and disappointed by the whole experience. I ordered their special large plate of the evening: swordfish with mash potatoes/asparagus. It sounded enticing but when the food was brought out, the swordfish was smaller than the palm of my hand and my hand is not very big. The fish was also bland as if someone had just popped it on the grill with no seasonsing. And for the portion size and lack of flavor, $21 is alot to pay. The service was absolutely atrocious as the wait staff would just disappear seemingly for hours. This echoes the same lack of service the first time I dined here for weekend brunch. Magnifico! 4/18/2006

Cafe Andree has a very New York-tucked-away-restaurant feel. It is place where one is in no rush, just savoring the company and the food. This is certainly a place for a casually elegant romantic rendezvous, or a mother-daughter bonding after a show or a day of shopping. I feel that I can eat here by myself at any time of day and feel relaxed and safe. I ordered the $23.00 grilled rib-eye steak with grilled asparagus and the $8.00 dulce de leche creme brulee. The excellent presentation was even surpassed by the actual taste and flavor of the steak! The creme brulee was huge, exquisite! Too bad I could only order one entree or it would have been gluttony! I already have my eye (and appetite) on the Beef short ribs, the grilled halibut and the menu staple, the churrasco steak for next time. I SHALL RETURN FOR MORE! The reviews are right 2/15/2006

Inside this charming but unassuming eatery youll find surprisingly affordable quality. Most dishes were better than average, some being exceptional. Small menu manages a variety of tastes and textures. Dishes are reasonably priced with most small and medium ranging between 7-11 bucks, and mains in the 12-20 range. Wine menu is small by CA standards. I recommend the tortilla soup and the steak au poivre. Banana empanadas were beautifully plated! The service was a bit slow, but they were all very polite and friendly when you flagged one down. The seating arrangements are ""cozy"", with most tables little more than a foot apart. Still, the place wasn't overly noisy and the intimate quarters add to the charm. It may not blow away people accustomed to SF's most elite venues, but it's perfect for those looking for great value in a high quality dining experience. Andree is well worth a try. The large loud party ruined the meal 2/5/2006

The food is great, but the large party of ""regulars"" were so loud that we could not hear ourselves think. Made it very tough to have a conversation. Service was slow and the first 2 bottles of wine on their very limited wine list were not available. Another patron was told that they were out of Ketel One vodka. I ordered the tasting menu and was told that it probably couldn't all be there in time given that we only had 1 1/2 hours before we needed to leave for our curtain. The food was really good, but I wouldn't go there again. The management needs some attention. more

Any place that rated 9.9 and had 11 great reviews was worth a shot. The table was ready when we arrived, the atmosphere was cozy but upscale, and the food and service were the same. My daughters loved their dinners -- the steak was superb -- and our other two entrees were excellent. The wine list was good, not overwhelming or intimidating, and our waitress's recommendation was perfect. Didn't sample the desserts, which we should have, as the desserts at the Redwood Room in the Clift Hotel were bland and over-priced. We had a very memorable dinner at Cafe Andree. Excellent. 10/12/2005

In my constant quest to dine in unfamiliar restaurants for the experience, I scanned Citysearch for something unique and was drawn to the high rating and reviews Cafe Andre recieved on this site. So, I went to check it out. FABULOUS!!! My wife and I passed by the restaurant twice on foot without noticing it. Two hotel doormen around the corner had no idea what I was talking about when I asked for the restaurant by name. Finally, we found it. This totally unassuming little restaurant serves some absolutely spectacular plates. I recommend sampling one of each size. In conclusion, it's one of those places in the city I consider to be a hidden gem. Enjoy! more
