Fun ambiance with great beer selection, but long waits for parties of less than six and very poor service. Food is average, typically heavy and greasy classic german food, but fai...

A Surprise 10/15/2005

I did not have a high expectation, but I was pleasantly surprised. The host was courteous, even though the wait was long. He recommended the specials to us. When we were seated, we ordered potato pancakes, suckling pigs, leg of lam, venison sausages. They were beyond our expectations. The side dishes were as well. Especially the creamed spinach. I feel oliged to write a postiive comment here because we had a great time. Bring friends, its agoing to eb a great night out Pros: Group, Food, Beer Cons: wait more

Authentic German food at it's best 8/6/2005

I've been here several times with either a large group or a few friends and it's always excellent. The food is amazing and the servers keep your drinks flowing and make sure there is plenty of food on the table. The portions are huge, so come hungry! If you've never been there, you sit German family style meaning you could be seated with other couples or diners at these long wood tables. Makes for an interesting night! The jagerschnitzel and meatloaf are some of the favorites, but feel free to ask the servers for suggestions on both the meals and the beer as there is a huge variety of authentic german brews. Pros: Great food, Excellent service, good atmosphere Cons: No parking, Big crowds, small bar area more

it's wunderbar.... 4/16/2005

i 've been living quite a few years here now in san francisco and i love going to the "SUPER KUECHE". i'm german myself and everytime i go there it reminds me of good old germany. the food is really good and so is the whole 'family' vibe of the restaurant. especially sharing the tables with new people is a very traditional european element. and the food....it's WUNDERBAR. suppenkueche's beer selection is fabulous...hey, what else is better than going to this german restaurant after a long day of work and treat yourself to a nice tasty beer? PROST! more

Keep driving...not worth it 2/19/2005

This is a resturaunt that ""could"" have been good....The food is good enough - BUT THE SERVICE is tired and unmotivated every day of the week ( when they are open) the ATTITUDE of the staff is pitifful. I've been there a few times with friends. If you go in with someone the staff knows (and likes) you might get some service and treated ok - if you walk in and they don't know you - well - my advise is simply... ""move on"". The emperor pancakes are good at Sunday brunch if they don't burn them first. And if you really want a treat ask the waiter (with the blank stare) to discribe the morning meatloaf; you'll surely run for the door. Pros: german food Cons: bad german food, horrid service, sharing tables more

It is german food 9/19/2004

It is a german restaurant, and I like what we got. Big tables all right, we had to share the table with others, but it is part of the scene. Parking is not an east task. Pros: inexpensive, fun experience Cons: , sharing table more

Genuine charms 2/13/2004

I walked in with a friend by accident, and was not too impressed with the menu when reading it. But once we got our dishes--- pork loin in mushroom sauce with salad and sauteed trout--- we were both very pleased. The pork loin is in this perfect sauce I can ever dream of in German food. Another nice surprise is the salad dressing, which is excellent. Service is warm and friendly, and the place is very unpretentious, cute, and dim at night where people laugh and cheer. Will definitely go back. Pros: Yummy food, Service, Setting more

Great Place 7/1/2003

I echo the others who point out how refreshing it is to find a place that serves ethnic food without turning it into some California fusion crap. You wont find seared Ahi or mango chutney here. I can't comment on whether the food here is authentic, but I can tell you it's great. Heavy, filling and full of flavor. If this is what the Germans were eating all those years, I don't know how they had the energy to start all those wars. more

A rare German import 6/7/2003

What a cool place. From the large on tap beer selections to the very, good and well appointed menu of German fare this place makes me happy as a little girl. Deiter would be proud. The offbeat, semi rustic backyard/barn table layout is quirky, but really well suited to a place that got it's start decades and decades ago. It's really worth a little time to check out their website for the history behind this place. They are few places in this city to enjoy a plate of schnitzle and a good dark lager. Pros: food, beer, atmosphere Cons: location, parking, reservations more

Egad its bad 6/2/2003

I have friends that force me to eat here every once and a while and I can honestly say that although I might wind up going there, I will never eat that horrid food again. Even the sole was bad. How do you manage that? The beer is pretty good though. more

Fusion, schmusion 5/31/2003

This restaurant is a rare bird - it appears to be actual ethnic food, as opposed to "Californian-German". The venison & cabbage here doesn't come laced with fava beans and arugula, and there's no "ahi tuna 'sauerbraten'." Just the straight stuff. And it's great! A wonderful departure from the SF gastronomic norm. Also a good place for groups and for out-of-towners who want something fun and different but not overly fanciful. I've been several times and never found myself disappointed, but maybe that's because I always make sure to get something with spaetzle... There are a few nice German wines, but it would be a shame not to take advantage of the beer. Enjoy! And if you don't like the idea of sharing a table with strangers... lighten up. Pros: Rare cuisine in SF, Fun atmosphere, Good value Cons: A bit crowded more

Pleasant Surprise 2/6/2003

I've heard about this restaurant for years, but have never tried it because I was afraid I wouldn't like German food. What a mistake! It was GREAT. The Ravioli appetizer was delicious--as was the pork with mushroom sauce and spatzle. The staff was extremely friendly and they have a wonderful selection of beer. Thumbs up! I'll definitely be going back. I think it would be fun to celebrate a birthday or special event with a group here as well. more
