Penang, a chain with restaurants also in NYC, features tasty Malaysian food which is a bit like a cross between Thai, Chinese, and Indian cooking. The menu is extensive featuring entrees which are big enough for 3 people easily in the low teens range and a selection of "rice dishes" which at about $6 are deceptively inexpensive but are plenty of food for dinner for one person.
Of the appetizers, I highly recommend curry chicken with bread - it's Indian-food like. Of the rice dishes, I like the Beef Rendang which is a beef stew with coconut flavoring. Its definitely worth the extra dollar to upgrade to the coconut rice. Of the desserts, the fried bananas with coconut ice cream are delicious.
The look of the place is very hip and trendy with exposed pipes in the ceiling - hipster industrial. They serve beer and wine, no hard alcohol. Cash only (no credit cards!).
