I feel like everyone should know about the best kept secret in Philly...Alissa at Salon Thalia is awesome! I had a facial last week and it was one of the best I ever had. I thought that my last esthetician was great but after seeing Alissa I dont think Ill ever go back to her!! Not only does my skin look fantastic but she gave me a lot of advise on home care without being too pushy and the hand and arm massage was so relaxing. You can tell she loves what she does and really has a great knowledge about skin care. Definitely going to be a regular facial client at Salon Thalia!

Sherry is gifted at cutting hair. She did a GREAT job with my fine limp short hair and has continued to work with me. It now has volume and looks beautifully cut. It takes minimal styling and care. She has the best attitude of any stylist I have ever worked with. She really wants her client to be happy.
Ali does a great facial, leg, underarm, brow wax. She has created an oasis of relaxation that I look forward to.
I can't say enough good about either of them or the Phoenix Salon. And their prices seem very competitive.
Pros: Best haircut I've ever had
Cons: None

I've had hair-salon phobia for most of my life - Ultra changed that! Sharyn is fabulous. She listens to what you want! In my experience, that alone qualifies the salon for 5 stars! She also takes into account what you're willing to do for upkeep. She does amazing highlights (mine lasted 4 months!) and a cut that continued to look great till the next trim. Gia did a great blow-dry to finish the job. All staff is very friendly and down-to-earth. No snobbery at this place - and for one of the first times in my life, I left a hair salon smiling!
Pros: Friendly, laid-back atmosphere, skilled staff
Cons: None

Established a relationship with Ed prior to his opening Salon Vanity, and followed him to the new salon blindly. I respect his work ethic. I respect his energetic, but conscience manner with his staff, as well as his clients. But mostly, I respect his passion and pure love for what he does. I have NEVER instructed him in a hair cut or a color. He's an artist and I have always believed you should trust an artist's instincts. Even if it's MY hair and I'M paying. My philosophy works, because over the years, I have received the most effusive and memorable compliments on my hair from family, co-workers and complete strangers on the street. Furthermore, there's no "airs" at Vanity. It's upscale. But they'll treat you to food, wine, restaurant advice, even a little back massage because they care that you chose them.
Pros: Ed's staff is young, talented, and plugged in.
Cons: Ed books up almost 3 weeks out.

BEWARE - if you use the phone number of Pierre & Carlo you will not be able to reach the salon in the Bellevue. The new name is HALCYON DAYS. 215-546-1283. They took over the salon - they have a lot of experience on running a salon - New York, etc. They have the latest in color, Keratone, process, etc. The salon is being redone and will be the premier salon in the city. Heather is wonderful. They have brought in people from New York so they will have the best professional staff in the city.
Pros: Excellent hairstylists
Cons: new phone number - unlisted

I first arrived at TBK in early September, when I moved back to the city, based on the recommendation of a close friend. I was promptly greeted by a super friendly and energetic receptionist (Mira) who seemed eager to meet me right from the get go. Shortly after, I was introduced to (Biljana) my aesthetician who entered the room in the same fashion. In addition to being eager to meet me she was also eager to get my treatment underway. After patronizing various other places in the city I would say that the level of service was right up there with what I have received in the past from A.B. and far surpassed the previous treatments from Topp***.
Recently, after much debate, I decide to incorporate a hair treatment into my regular TBK regimen. I was hesitant at first because hair has only recently been added; but all my doubts were pushed aside when my stylist (Julian) came in prior to my service just to meet me and get to know my hair on a more personal level! To sum it up in four words ‘it was exactly what I needed.’ I couldn’t have been more pleased with the cut, the color and the education I received while he was doing it. To anyone who has never been to TBK you are surely missing out. Though small, this ‘urban retreat’ is just that. Leave the worries and bustle of the city behind when you walk through the door and be prepared to be pampered!
Pros: Great service and friendly staff

The Pierre and Carlo Salon offers a number of serviced including mud wraps, massage therapy and facials. They are on the more expensive side (starting at $40) and some workers can be a bit pretentious. I have never had my hair done there but my friends swears that Barbara Lutz is the best stylist around.

Saturn Club is a good place for decent hair cuts. You can ask for a trainee, which will cost $20 for a basic haircut and shampoo. The hairstlysts are all pretty nice. I had a lot of problem with the front desk people. They have a lot of attitude and rude about making appointments and accepting coupons (y ou can find coupons online or thru campus publications). The prices for the products were rather pricy. Make reservations in advance, as their time slot fill up. Esp during the school year when Penn and Drexel are in session.
