I can eat a cheeseburger at almost any meal, but sometimes I want my Dad's backyard best. I want the thick, juicy, flame-grilled taste with all the fixins. I don't go to Dick's ...

Dick's will never go out of style 8/30/2005

No, you can't get a fancy custom meal here. No, Dick's don't like vegetarians. But when you're in the mood for greasy burger joint food quick with atmosphere, Dick's is the best. On top of which, Dick's on Broadway was immortalized by Sir-Mix-A-Lot. What more can you ask? more

50 years of food so good they line up around the block 8/20/2005

Dick’s Drive-In is a Seattle institution. I moved here from Atlanta, where The Varsity is king, luring in townies and tourists with grease-soaked fries and overloaded chili-dogs for the past 75 years. The Varsity is disgusting. Dick’s is awesome. Where else can you go for dirt-cheap cheeseburger that tastes this good! And the slim cut, crispy fries are delicious (though very greasy). But for my money, nothing compares to the vanilla milkshake—so simple and perfect and creamy, it’s fast food heaven. NOTE: The lines are very long any time of day or night, but the food is worth it, so get over it and wait. more

Good, Cheap, Instant Service 8/19/2005

Dick's puts the national fast food chains to shame. Sure, you don't get any special orders, but why do you need them? At Dick's you get a fresh burger cooked on a grill rather than a microwave, real fries that you can watch the guy shove through the cutter and drop into the molten grease, and shakes that start with actual dairy products rather than chemical compounds. And all for a price that's about 2/3 of McD's or BK. Then, you get to eat in your car and entertain yourself watching all types of people stand in line for their Dick's fix. What could be better? more

Food for the masses 8/16/2005

Dick's has everything going for it on the how to make a fast food chain succeed list. A short and to the point menu, wonderful potato skin fries, great burgers, and very thick, whipped to order milkshakes. There is always a line at Dick's which is as it should be. The market always rewards excellence. The service at Dick's is efficient and fast and the clientele is always interesting. This is a great place to people watch while you slurp your shake. This is a local chain with locations where you live (Broadway,Wallingford,Seattle Center, Lake City). more

Dick's Drive In 7/29/2005

A good solid hamburger restaurant, a local institution that's been in business since 1954. Dick's offers reasonably priced food such as hamburgers, cheeseburgers, the Deluxe (with sauce and two beef patties and cheese) and of course the requisite shakes and soda pop. This one on Broadway is a drive in, but there's a sit down restaurant on Queen Anne. The nice thing about Dick's is that other than the prices, the menu never changes: just straight ahead hamburgers and fries. Good stuff for people who want no frills food. more

Dicks is SO 50's 7/14/2005

Dicks is a place that seems to have stopped time in the 1950's. This is a place that on any given time (up till 2am) you can find the entire parking lot FULL of people and cars. Just hanging out and ordering burgers, fries, and shakes from the walk up window. Dicks does not offer some secret recipie to their food. It is SO greasy! but it has charm and a life of its own. It is so original and I suspect it will not have changed in another 50 years as that seems to be the super secret to their thriving busines. I am not a burger eater so have a hard time here on their tiny menu (no chicken, and no veggie burgers to be found). more

Sure it's a classic, but the food is lacking 7/11/2005

Dick's Drive-In is a classic in Seattle. Residents talk about it and recommend stoping in for their signature "instant" hamburgers. On these recommendations I stopped in to a Dick's in Seattle. Dick's concept of "instant" food is that you have no choice: you can have a burger with a fixed set of topings and no deviation, or you can have a cheeseburger which is the previous with a slab of cheese on top. Personally, I like being able to design my own burger (no mustard, please)! They did have rather excellent french fries, I went back for a second order. It may be worth a try, if you don't mind mustard. more

Indie McDonalds 5/23/2005

Do not make the mistake of customizing your order at Dick's. You look dorky enough in relation to everyone else on Capitol Hill. You order by name only. The food is not better than McDonalds, though one could argue that the fries are fresher. The burgers are tiny and the buns have a slight sweet tate. It's not cheaper, really. But it's open late (til 2 AM) and you get the self-satisfaction of knowing you are supporting a local chain instead of a giant scary conglomorate like McDonalds that could crush you like a bug for looking at it funny. more
