For a fun trip on a lazy day, or especially to entertain out of town visitors, a ride on a Washington State Ferry is a must. For about $6 you can enjoy the skyline of Seattle from the deck of the ferry on the Seattle-Bainbridge run, pass Alki, stop for lunch or a walk in Winslow on Bainbridge, and return to the big city. Plenty of photo opportunities, no touristy spiels, and best of all this feels like the real thing because the islanders really do use these boats as part of their everyday life.

This place is about the treatments, not the impression, and the treatments are wonderful. Hot and cold pools, steam, body scrubs where you will enjoy the symbolically cathartic feeling of layers of skin falling away. With an entry fee of $25, and additional reasonable fees for services such as scrubs and massages, you will feel truly pampered without shelling out for the fashionable setting of a more chic spa.

An excursion to World Spice Merchants is a quick round-the-world adventure for the senses. This place is the closest you'll get in Seattle to an exotic third-world spice bazaar. If you need an obscue spice for a recipe and can't find it anywhere else, you'll find it here. It's also nice that you can open the jars and smell and check out what's in there. These spices (and teas) are so different from the horribly bland stuff sold in supermarkets, they're worth a special trip.

KEXP is a unique and wonderful radio station. Depending upon when you tune in and who the DJ is, you might hear just about any kind of music. This is not the "popular" stuff that they play repeatedly on other stations. It is hand-picked music that can really broaden a person's tastes and understanding. Once in a while I'll hear something I'm not too wild about, but that's a small price to pay for the benefit of having an ever-changing smorgasbord of really good tunes.

The variety of some things (particularly meats) is at times sparse, but if it's whole grains and bulk items you want, you'll find them in abundance. Their fresh counter offers a good selection of prepared deli items. My kids also love coming in here because they always let them have a free apple or banana.

Here in Seattle we are fortunate to have access to every imaginable type of outdoor activity. We're even more fortunate to have REI to sell us top quality, reasonably priced equipment for all of these activities. At times I have paid a bit more for something from REI but I have never been disappointed with anything I've bought there. Even their own brands are fantastic. The sales help is also generally very friendly and knowledgeable. They really participate in these sports so they know their stuff!

It really doesn't matter what you see at the Paramount, it will generally be an enjoyable evening. Just entering the building, with its opulent decor, feels special. No chrome or cheap carpeting...

No chrome or cheap carpeting here, but plenty of velvet, ornamental plaster and twinkling chandeliers. The auditorium is also great, with a large capacity that still feels intimate and good acoustics.
