CLOSED AND DIDN'T TELL GUESTS WHO HAD RESERVATIONS 5/14/2008

Last night I had a group of 15 going to D.F. for a meeting. One of the members arrived very early and was told by a security guard that the owners of D.F. didn't pay their mortgage so was locked out. So, as someone waited for other group members I went in search of a nearby restaurant that could accommodate all of us. It was embarrassing to me and gave me a poor impression of the character of the owners of D.F. who should've contacted guests who had reservations or, had they not been able to do so, make arrangements with a nearby restaurant and post a notice on the door. Sungari restaurant two blocks down, saved the day. The entire group thoroughly enjoyed our meals there. Pros: None Cons: Closed and didn't advise customers more

Great Place! 5/9/2008

WOW. The drinks are wonderful, the food was wonderful and the customer service was wonderful! When you go there definatly get the guacamole and a margarita to start out the night with. We had my 9 month old daughter with us and I was a little hesitant to go there seeing as its not really a kid friendly atmosphere but I was totally wrong. The wait staff were making her smile and it was loud enough that she was not the center of all the loudness. Others said that it was too spendy but really the drink prices were not that bad. If you get a 12 dollar margarita you are paying for the expensive liquor. Dinner wasnt too bad price wise either. I got the enchiladas and it was only 11 dollars and it filled me up. It got busy at the end of our dinner so the waitress was a little slow on picking up the check but all in all it was a great experience. I will definatly go back. Highly recommended. Pros: great food, excellent drinks, cool bathrooms Cons: parking more

Top 5 Meal Ever! 3/27/2008

My wife and I had reservations for 6:45 on a Thursday night and arrived a little early for a drink. They weren't busy so they gave us our table and we ordered up a house margarita and the chili infused tropical heat. Both were amazing! The ceviche was good, and the homemade guac was great. The service and the main course is what makes this place a 5. We were having a leisurely date night out, so our waitress slowed down the check backs to the perfect time and was so helpful with our menu choices. The lamb shank was so flavorful, moist and tender I was sad when my last bite was gone. Just a wonderful evening out! Pros: Main Dishes and Service Cons: I loved it all more

Good food overpriced and lousy drinks 3/16/2008

I took my fiance' here about a year ago for Valentines day and honestly would have given a 1 star at the time. So I thought I would try and second time just to see if anything changed (by the way looks like a bunch of blogs were deleted that had the same sentiments I did at the time?? (hmmm). Anyway, I agree with Mole and Ceviche's were good. But to my disappointment the service was little subpar and the drinks were marginally of better quality than the last time. I expect for the money to get the same amount of quality. I just don't understand for a $12 drink, why I can't get something of quality that I can enjoy. Again, I've could of given my drink to my kid and they probably wouldn't have known the difference between their juicy juice drinks. Somebody needs to teach these folks how to make a drink?? Other than that, if you're interested in a hanging out in a hip place with decent food, ok service, and lousy drinks be my guest. Pros: Food Cons: Drinks, Service, and overall value more

Good guac. 2/28/2008

I love their guacamole. It is delish. The Amorcita. their strawberry margarita, is extremely addictive and I do not advise trying it unless you want to think about it all day when you're thirsty. Don't miss this place - it's great! Hard to find, though, unless you really know the area. more

love it 2/12/2008

One of my favorite places in Portland. I thought this place was just fantastic. The food is always good, the mexican chocolate, so delicious. The service has been fantastic and not so great so that's kind of a toss up but the food is so delicious it's worth the risk. Pros: Food Cons: Service is a toss up more

Authentic, great service! 1/6/2008

From start to finish, this was a great experience! I called in the morning to make a reservation for that evening not thinking they would be able to get a party of 8 in, and to my surprise, they had space for us and one of the owners actually answered they phone! This was great because he was able to answer all my questions! My husband is from Mexico and we travel there often, so I wanted to make sure the dishes were really what we were hoping for. Lets just say they delivered! The service was promt, friendly and the food.... man, let me just say from the ceviche to the mole, to the tres leches cake, and flan, all of our favorites, they were right on! All of our friends were raving as well, it was a great time for all...and to top it off, my husband felt like he had a taste of home for his birthday! Mission Accomplished! Thanks DF!!!! WE WILL BE BACK! Pros: Food, service, everything! Cons: None more

Best Veggie Enchiladas Ever 12/12/2007

I went to DF with a few friends and I ordered the vegetable enchiladas, very unexpectedly delicious. I want to go back just to eat that again. We also had a chip/salsa/guacamole starter which was good but not as outstanding as the enchiladas. Nice atmosphere, tasty drinks. I'll be back for sure. Pros: Delicious Enchiladas Cons: Parking, because it's in the Pearl more

Wonderful food - great service - WOW - the moles! 10/13/2007

We went to an early dinner before attending a show and were we delighted with our choice to eat at DF. I had read the other reviews so we had high expectations and they were met. The margaritas are delicous and unique - especially the strawberry infused tequila. The guacamole is the best too. We had two of the three moles - the chicken and the pork entrees - and they were cooked perfectly and were complimented by the moles perfectly. Our server was delightful and helpful too. I hope these gentlemen stay in business a long time - they have a winning combination and deserve to have a packed house! The only drawback, which relates to the other diners and not the restaurant, was the screaming and rampant young children. For those of you with kids that are reading this review PLEASE keep them as quiet as possible and at your table. We don't want them wandering around the restaurant touching everything and then standing by or almost on our table. Allowing that behaviour is in very poor taste and not very considerate. Pros: Moles, Service, Tequila Cons: limited menu more

Holy ceviche! 10/3/2007

I am aware that DF is known for their excellent moles. However, my girlfriend and I went there last week and tried out the ceviche starter and WOW was it delicious. The ceviched starter came with 3 different fresh fish ceviched offerings with different flavors. Each one was absolutely scrumptious and the fish taseted as if it had been fresh caught. For entrees we had the tamales and motulenos. We were both very pleased by the complex flavors in each of these dishes. Last but not least, this place had some interesting and delicious cocktail offerings. The "Tropical Heat" is a well balanced mango drink mixed with serrano chile infused tequila. I was hesitant to order this drink thinking the the chile tequila might override the mango taste and come off too spicy, it was not. Also, the "Amorcita", a drink made with strawberry infused tequila was very tasty. I highly recommend this place and look forward to my next dinner there! Pros: Ceviches and infused cocktail drinks more

My absolute favorite!! 8/12/2007

This is the best authentic mexican food I've had. The service is always really good, very consistently incredible food. And no exaggeration, BEST margaritas in the country. My husband and I always get the El Fluido and the El Sabroso, sooo good!!!! I've travelled everywhere and cannot find one even close to the taste and quality of theirs. You have to go!! Pros: Everything! Cons: None! more

Overpriced & average 7/21/2007

I have to give this place credit for their guacamole and selection of salsas?quite nice, really. However, I was sorely disappointed in my dinner selection. I chose the Caesar salad with calamari and ended up sending it back because the salt was so intense I could barely bite into it without almost gagging. The wait staff was nice enough to try to fix the problem, but the second salad came back with almost the same results. My friend tried the mole, but usually the meat isn?t just sitting on top of the sauce. I can appreciate trying to be inventive in the kitchen, but here it?s just not working. It?s completely overpriced also. I would much rather spend my money at Nuestra Cocina where I know the food will be delicious and appropriately priced. Pros: Kind wait staff, good guacamole Cons: Overpriced, not authentic Mexican more

In the mood for Mexican? Down in the Pearl is a new favorite of mine... 5/18/2007

...and spotting my favorite server who also works at their sister restaurant made it even better. The timing had to do with seeing the movies Volver and Pan's Labyrinth. Anyway I stuck to my routine of sitting at the bar to order a variety of small plates, land-sea-air, and came away impressed with how they prepared a Hawaiian fish, guacomole, the octopus cocktail, lengua tacos, and flan. Next time I'll likely do something similar with Pinot Gris, or maybe one of the mojitos or margaritas because they do move a few liters of tequila. Do give DF a try because prices are fair, food great, and service exceptional...I had the most wonderful bowl of soup broth made of chicken, tomatoes, onions, garlic and chilis. Give it a try! Pros: Small Plate Dining, No Doubt the Tres Chocolates Cons: The Offerings Don't Change Much, Similar Menu Throughout the Year more

AWESOME FOOD! 4/2/2007

My mother and I love to eat out and since I have been a pastry chef and have gotten to know quite a few places, this is our one true love. I've worked in another high-end restaurant in the area but my taste buds always go to df - no matter what the flavor I'm craving. My mother loves the Dungeness crab in the spice sauce and I'm partial to the pork tacos, guacamole and lately the green salad with steak - oh my LORD! They have some new tasty treats on the dessert menu, one being a mascarpone maple cheesecake - it will melt in your mouth! The drinks are always right on and the food is plentiful. You would be hard press not to take out-of-town guests to this spot. The colors, the music and the food will tantalize your being. Enjoy! more

Next time we will try something different with better seating accomodations. 3/30/2007

Friday night was my husbands and my first time at DF. We made reservations so seating was prompt. We were disappointed with the orange plastic outdoor chairs, very uncomfortable almost wanted to get up and leave once I sat down. To me one of the things important when dining out is comfort. Our waitress had a larger group that she was waiting on so once we recieved our first beer she didn't check on us much, so we were out halfway through our dinner. Menu was hard to read since I am not of the mexican aunthenticity. Guacamole was great and dinner was ok. I got the chicken tamales which were chalky and not much chicken, my husband got the chicken mole which was tasty but fried. Alot of things on the menu are fried which we try and stay away from. Overall the employees all seem very nice and friendly, autmosphere was pleasing, seating very uncomfortable, food ok, and in conclusion we will not be back. more

The best cerviche anywhere 3/6/2007

I was excited to try DF when it first opened, because I was a fan of Taqueria Nueve. I've been there several times now, and have never been disappointed. The margaritas and sangria are strong and tasty. The fish is always fresh, and the cerviche is amazing(especially the octopus). You don't hear too much about their deserts, but they're some of the best in the city. Service has always been friendly but low-key. Pros: cerviche, banana split, sangria more

Great Upscale Mexican Food 2/18/2007

Three of us visited DF on a Sunday night. We had a wonderful experience! Wait staff was great, Appetizers good, outstanding trout. My friends said it was the best pork they had ever eaten. Dessert was to die for, chocolate yummyness. Definately will be back. more

Great Mole Sauce! 2/17/2007

My husband loves mole sauce and ordered the steak with mole and since dining at df last Friday night he has not stopped talking about it. He loved it! (I had to stop him from licking the plate!) I am not generally a mole sauce fan myself, but ordered the mole with chicken and was impressed. We will be back! Great margaritas. more

Great atmosphere and good food 1/7/2007

We tried DF for the first time last month and overall experience was great! We ordered the camarones for our appetizer and they were delish. The Mole Negro didn't have alot of flavor. The special tamale of the day was very flavorful and not dry at all. The non-traditional tostada on the menu was a winner with our 11 year old daughter. In fact I think I would order the tostada next time. Drinks were good, although we would like to see more exotic tequilas on the tequila menu! Pros: food, drinks, ambiance Cons: not enough variety of tequila more

Fashionable Pearl denizens come for sweeping views and tequila-soaked cocktails. The menu includes Mexican standards such as ceviches, tacos, moles and other dishes such as whole fried trout with garlic, chiles and olive oil. Full bar service includes 40 types of tequila.
