Papa Haydn serves excellent food and dessert, and the environment of the restaurant is fun and sophisticated. The neighborhood (NW 23rd Ave) is fun, and I think adds to the appeal of the restaurant.
The food is delicious and creative, and you have plenty of options. The desserts, though, are a major draw. The cakes, the panna cotta, anything with chocolate -- Papa Haydn knows their desserts and offers a wide selection.
Expect a bit of a wait on weekends, but the wait is worth it (and save room for dessert!).

I was first exposed to Gilt by a friend who knew the owner and worked there part time. I thought the pieces were beautiful and amazing and talked about the shop to my then-boyfriend (now husband!). He surprised me by going in to the shop and talking to the owner and my friend. They both had been there when I was admiring rings so they were able to give him hints/tips about what I had liked. He picked out the most beautiful ring and I love it more every day. I get compliments about it all the time and I love telling people it is a piece of estate jewelry from the 30's. I really like having a ring that is not a cookie-cutter engagement and wedding band set.
Thank you, Gilt for helping my husband way back when... I plan on sending him your way soon... we just moved back to Oregon and just celebrated our 4th anniversary. :)
Pros: Beautiful unique jewelry and expert staff!

Coming from someone who has spent that last seven years of their lives working in a multitude of different retail settings (a few being on Hawthorne) I ask you this:
At some point, shouldn't one be adult enough to take responsibility in knowing what fits properly and what is comfortable?
Blaming Imelda's for purchasing a pair of shoes in the wrong size is a lot like blaming the Gap for buying a pair of jeans that you're too fat to squeeze into. And speaking from experience, it takes more than one or two wears to break in a pair of boots. Fashion can mean pain, kids.
And as far as retail staffs go, I've found the Imelda's girls to be nothing but friendly, helpful and honest.
I know... It's scary and off putting when sales clerks try to help you and a complete and utter outrage when they don't help you enough, right? Yeah...
Besides the outrageously high husband stealing rates, retail is supposed to be fun, Portland... lighten up!

I have been a huge fan of Imelda's for a number of years (from before they moved to their new location directly on Hawthorne), and have consistently depended on Imelda's for my cute-shoe needs.
In the new location, which is quite a bit larger, I have also found that they have a much expanded selection of interesting and fun handbags (in addition to many more shoes!).
If you are looking for something fun or funky, I recommend a look at what Imelda's has to offer.

My friend and I went into Charlotte's for an appointment during the sample sale. Our girl Rene took us to our private suite, asked me all kinds of questions about my preferences and brought me a gorgeous array of dresses. She even brought me a dress in a fabric I didn't think I liked to make sure we could really cross it off my list. We had a lot of fun together, she helped me feel like a princess, and I walked out the door with a dress... on my first day of looking as well! I hope to take my bridesmaids back for their dresses as well. I have every belief that they will take as good of care as my bridesmaids as they took of me. (unlike experiences I've had at the big box bridal store).
The only con was we had to take our shoes off and leave them at the front... my friend and I had a SATC moment and recalled the episode when Carrie lost her shoes at the party... thankfully that didn't happen to us, but I wasn't super excited about taking off my shoes at the front, though I probably could have taken them with me. ANd really, it was for the protection of the dresses, so it wasn't exactly a con.
LOVE THEM!!!
Pros: Individual appointments
Cons: shoes off!

I bought my wedding dress from Charlotte's. It's a wonderful experience to try on dresses there--they are very nice, and have beautiful "trying-on" rooms. They don't accept returns, which is normal, but the only con was that they were the ones who measured me, and then picked the size of dress to order accordingly. The dress was a bit tight when it came (no, I hadn't gained weight!), and they wouldn't exchange it. Make sure they order on the bigger rather than smaller side.

A large selection of herbs are available in bulk rate. These organically grown plants can be purchased by the ounce either whole or crushed and ingested as tea or put into capsules. It is important to research the books that they sell in order to know how to administer alternative medicine. There is a large reference book on display that has exact formulas for exact dosages. This book was written by the store's herbologist. It is available for purchase.
Many medicines are derived from these herbs. It is believed that using the herbs directly are healthier than using the synthetic concentrates produced the corporate drug companies.

I simply love this place. I could wander around for days at a time. This place is a book lover's dream. The building takes up a full city block and has several floors. There are books for just about every taste. Plus they buy books and seem to give a fair deal for them.
Here is a place with books for every taste and every budget. Go see for yourself.
