My first trip to OMSI was a school sleepover, 15 years ago. When I was in college I volunteered around the museum teaching people of all ages and demonstrating science to them. I love everything about OMSI - it reminds me that there is a kid in all of us desiring to learn as much as we can about the world around us. Whether it be physics, chemistry, biology, human development, technology, industry, etc., the INTERACTIVE HANDS ON exhibits inspire and help me learn by doing and make difficult or abstract concepts easy to learn and understand.

While a one-time visit can be rather costly, at $15 per person for a non-member, a family membership at $75 per year is pretty reasonable for a museum that provides an excellent program with considerably less endowment funding than a big city museum. They have a decent representative collection of Asian, Native American, European, and American art. The space is well laid out, bright, and comfortable, with a nice museum store, cafe, and a new wing that will be opening October 2, which will house a new space for modern and contemporary art and the Northwest Film Center, among other new resources . Kids seem to welcome, and there are many classes available for younger ones. There are also many events for curious adults, too.

When you go into Quintana you are transported into the world of other cultures as represented in their art. They mostly have things from Inuit to Northwest Indians. This is a wonderful place to go to buy something very special. The exhibits change regularly and every featured artist or collection is of excellent quality.

Located near the entrance of the Oregon Museum of Science and Technology, this is more than a gift store. It is filled with learning toys, science books, and interesting smaller items that relate to science or animals. For a museum store, the prices are quite reasonable. It's quite a large store and fun to look around even if you are only browsing.

More
The Maritime Center near downtown by the river is definitely a small museum, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in performance. The amount of information, displays and exhibits on the shipping and boating industry will delight the hidden sailors in all of us. The center is certainly a great place to take an older child who has interest in unusual subjects or to reminisce of days gone by. When I visited I found it to be almost empty and extremely quiet… so as to hear a pin drop.

I always appreciate a gallery like this one that has open spaces and excellent lighting to make looking at the art a pleasant experience. Their shows change monthly and feature individual artists. The staff is very knowledgeable since they are all artists themselves. The gallery is open seven days a week.

The Pittock Mansion has a charm that can only be described as a time swept piece of magic. The history surrounding the couple that inhabited this mansion can only be described as, whoa where did they find the time. This is an interesting afternoon spent learning the early history about journalism/Oregonian for kids in grade schools.

More
When I went to browse the art at this gallery, I discovered it also held a small wine bar and a downstairs area that serves as a venue for private parties. The decor is suppose to stimulate olden times with a feel of richness and opulence. I personally thought the design of the place was strange and somewhat ugly. There was some interesting art in the gallery though.
