You won't be disappointed. 2/16/2012

Every time a friend from out of town we stop here. The food is fantastic, great portions, hot and fast. The atmosphere is just right- friendly, not uptight. Be sure to try them out. You won't be disappointed. more

Great! 8/30/2011

This place is great. Whenever I find myself on that side of the hill, I head over there (which is usually a Monday, so I get really sad that they're closed.\r \r Love the Hickory burger and cream soda. Standing doesn't usually take too long, unless you have more than 2 people. \r I went with my friend and my son, stood for about 5 minutes before getting 3 seats. The waiter got us our food pretty quickly and made a slice of cheese with a smiley face in it for my kid. He loved it. \r The waiter is surly, but he's never been rude to me ever. \r \r There are a few pro tips, though:\r 1-Park down the street a little bit. The parking lot for the Apple Pan is like 3 spaces. The parking on the street is good for about an hour, which is all you'll need.\r 2-There are only 20 seats in this place. It's not a sit and dine experience. It's an eat on your lunch break, then gtfo kinda place. They have to keep the customers coming and going, otherwise you have a crowd of people out the door waiting for half an hour for one seat. If you want to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee, order it to go or head to Starbucks. Which brings me to...\r 3-Order it to go. I love the burgers, but I don't like crowds. This place gets crazy crowded around lunch times.\r \r The parking issue caused it to lose a star, but great place. more

Simply the best pie and burgers! 8/3/2011

I am here in line at least three times per week. Extra time in the gym is a must but it is worth it! It is no secret in West LA! more

Really Enjoy The Food!! 7/25/2011

I enjoy their food here. I don't know if it's also the same chef cooking as the one in Top Chef this season, but at least I like the super fast way they get the food out to you, without feeling hurried. More accurately, I think I should say that the food comes out in successions, at the perfect timing. more

Where Is Chalie Collens when u need him????? 6/11/2011

For all you ""OLD timers"", And I do mean OLDDDDDD. Remember the ""kid"" as you entered on the west side in 1962??Guess what? THAT be me, and I gotta tell ya, the ""pan"" was a great place to learn about life! Joe Kelly was the boss, and C.P. collens was the day time chief ,OK he was the flipper of the meat LOL LOL. Grover Thomas Was the other ""chief"" He was always know as BUCK! The food was the finest then, and it still is. Just a few bucks more!!! Back then, the average guest check was under $1.00, and if I got a quarter, I was a happy guy. Lets all hope that places like the ""pan"" will always be around. It taught this old man, how to be a good man..... Have a great Life Dennis Richards La Quinta Calif more

Best Burger and Fries 2/19/2011

I've been coming here for 20 years off and on. Whenever I return I have to order the same thing: Hickory Burger and Fries. The sauce and the burger are made perfectly and the fries have that perfect crunch. \r more

Burger Heaven 12/21/2010

I've been coming to Apple Pan for over 20 years. When I lived nearby, my boyfriend & I would eat there weekly. Hector always knew what we would order & start it ahead of time, so we'd have our food ready to eat when we sat down. I go there as often as I can now. I always order the hickory burger with cheddar cheese and my fries well done. YUP, heaven on earth. more

Greaseland 12/6/2010

Well,,, my friends have talked about this place for a while and here is what I found for myself. \r A super old waiter who doesn't seem like you deserve an explanation of anything on the menu. The burger is the standard ground meat you can buy anywhere. They just add a little greese to give it the special apple pan taste. Their secret sauce is ketchup and relish ( maybe a secret in the early 1900 when they first opened). I would go with Islands burgers which very close by any day. Don't always believe the hype. I could stick my thumb in grease and you would say it's delicious. more

Overrated, over-priced 9/14/2010

This is one of those places where I'm absolutely convinced that the ONLY reason people THINK they like it is because it's been around forever. I'll break it down in 3 ways: Taste, Atmosphere, and Value.\r \r 1) Taste:\r Not even close to one of the best burgers I've ever had (that honor goes to Fergburger in Queenstown, New Zealand). While not terrible, it's a bit too greasy for my liking, as the quality of the beef is simply average, and the condiments/etc. are run of the mill.\r There are SO many other places, including many chains, that are just much better--Five Guys, Fat Burger, and Fudd Rucker's, just to name a few.\r One thing we found hilarious is if you ask for it ""medium rare,"" they say ""they're all medium rare."" If you ask for it ""medium well,"" they'll say they're all made like that. Whatever.\r \r 2) Atmosphere:\r One thing it is NOT is outgoing/ friendly. I'll second what someone else said with the sense of urgency. You do not go here to have a meal and a nice chat with friends. You go, you get in, don't ask questions about the menu, eat, and you get out.\r Not much is here--mainly just a large U shaped counter. And nothing has changed in probably decades, including many of the old employees. I think that would be cool if the old dudes were nice, but they come off as surly and impatient most of the time. The only thing that has changed over the years seems to be their outlandish prices (more on that in a sec). Overall, as much as people WANT this place to be ""charming,"" we found it to be anything but.\r \r 3) Value:\r Flat out, it's a bad value. No one should have to pay upwards of $14 for a burger, drink, and fries, at an ""old school"" place like this. It's a sham. There are places that cost HALF as much and taste TWICE as good (if not better) and have BETTER atmospheres.\r \r Overall:\r Once you get over the hype, take a step back, and really compare it to either places of either much better value (In N Out Burger) or atmosphere/taste (Father's Office [though note I hate the cramped feeling in their SM location and lack of reservations]), or both (Fergburger), you can't help but scratch your head as to why anyone TRULY likes this place. It's just another place that people in LA like to brag about going to because they think it's cool because OTHERS have thought it's been cool for decades... even though in reality it's average, at best. more

Definitely the BEST BURGER I've ever had!! 5/5/2010

These are by far the best burgers in L.A. and probably the world!! I think the service is fantastic, I've never had to wait for I long time, the only thing I do agree with, in relation to the other reviews, is, that the prices are quite high. But they are totally worth every single penny! Pros: Delicious Cons: Parking more

It's about the EXPERIENCE 12/7/2009

This is one of LA most controversial burger spots, and all the excuses for the nay-sayers are illegitimate, to put it lightly. Adored by all the folks I grew up with on the Westside, the Apple Pan is a historical landmark of epic tastiness. Pricey? Yes. Worth it? HELL YEAH! I highly suggest the ""Hickory Cheesey,"" the Hickory Burger with a thick slice of Tilamook cheddar, and their near-perfect fries. The burger's barbecue sauce in combination with the chunk of hand-leafed iceberg lettuce ""set off"" this burger. It is my favorite burger in LA (along with the Double-Double, and the burger at Father's Office) The place hasn't changed much in the past 50 years, as you may notice from the original counter top and swivel stools. The waiters range from the smugly rude little fella on the left counter, to the always smiling Gordon on the right side. Gordon is the gray-haired monster of a man who is always working late nights, and is always happy to refill your ketchup plate without you needing to ask. I suggest sitting in his section; the other waiters can be a bit abrasive during rush hours. The fact is: you can get a very good burger at In-n-Out, but it doesn't have the same feel, the same taste, OR the ambiance. Even during my periods of unemployment, or as a struggling college student, I would happily pay 10 bucks for a burger and IBC root beer, here. The taste and the satisfaction after crammin' down a Hickory Cheesey at midnight is unmatched. And the hordes of people who line the walls during peak lunch and dinner can attest to that fact. If you haven't tried the place, save up your pennies, and hit the A-Pan at 11 o'clock at night, with a mellow beer buzz. You will almost certainly return for another experience... and another... and another. Pros: Tasty burgers, old school feel, great fries, open LATE Cons: Standing wait during busy hours, pricey, cash-only more

Excellent food if you can deal with the place 7/21/2009

We went there today for the first time. When we sat down, we could see the counter man was in machine mode. Fast, fast, fast. Don't ask stupid questions. Give me your order. I had a tuna sandwich with swiss cheese on toasted rye. Came out just as I asked and delicious. My wife ate an egg salad sandwich and she loved it. In the meantime, people are starting to congregate around you watching as you eat. Don't take an extra minute or someone will be upset with you that you took too long. Unique place with good food, but we won't be back. Too frenetic and high pressure. Just not worth the hassle. In addition, their signature apple pie wasn't that wonderful. OK, but I've eaten way better. Pros: Excellent Cons: Frenetic place more
