Well,,, my friends have talked about this place for a while and here is what I found for myself. \r A super old waiter who doesn't seem like you deserve an explanation of anythin...

hickory cheese, fries and a diet coke 2/10/2003

Been eat'n there since I was 6 or 7 years old ( 1965 or 66 ) This place has got the greatest tasting burgers in LA I don't how they make somthing so simple so great! It's the order in which they apply the ""stuff"", you know the lettuce mayo pickle and the hickory sause, the bun is always fresh and kinda flat with out sesame seeds, the cheese is chedder I think? Or is the way they plop it down in front of ya...while handing you another napkin and sliding you your water in the little white paper cup being supperted and held by the red plastic cup holder (circa 1947) and he's picking up a tuna sandwich for your buddy sitting next to ya. Amazing...just like a Broadway show. Go in and sit on the right side, you will be back! Pros: service, food quality, parking Cons: in LA I live in Vegas, a little pricy, no breakfast more

Old-fashioned diner 2/8/2003

Just a large counter around a kitchen with a lot of old cooks. The best egg salad sandwich I've ever eaten! It was so huge the bread couldn't even hold it. =) Pros: fast food, good menu Cons: bad seating more

Good but was better! 2/7/2003

I ate here on Wed.2/5/2003 The Burger could be 2oz. bigger The Apple pie is sweeter than in the past. It use to be better but still OK for Lunch if you beat the rush at noon. Pros: Hickory burger, Ham on rye, Apple pie Cons: small fries, seating tight, no bottle coke more

The best retro burger place 2/7/2003

My wife and I have been going there since 1972. Love the food and the atmosphere Pros: Good food, Love the look Cons: Usually a wait, Hard to find parking more

Great pie, bad meat 1/10/2003

My rating of 10 is only with respect to the pie. I ate there on a Sunday, and had a horrible burger made from old meat. I don't understand how anybody can rate this the best burger on the block, much less in L.A.! The apple pie however, is worth driving accross town for -- it's the best apple pie in town, if not the entire state of California. As for the ambience, the place is nice but some of the customers become quite hostile regarding open stools. Pros: great pie, Parking okay, fast Cons: crowded, bad sandwiches more

Great Atmo! 1/8/2003

The Apple Pan is an L.A. experience worth at least one visit. The hamburgers, however, are just OK. I've eaten here several times (a must to bring out of town visitors who are up for a kitchy, old school experience) and find the food just above fast food in quality with one exception, the apple pie is very good! One tip, be ready with your order as soon as you get a seat at the counter as things move fast here! For burgers, I find the Hamburger Hamlet or Coogies to be quite a bit better for just slightly more money (the Apple Pan is not that cheap!) Pros: Fun atmosphere, Great pie, Decent hamburgers Cons: Should be cheaper, Very limited seating, Few hamburger topping more

Best in the West 1/4/2003

The Apple Pan has absolutely the best burgers in the L. A. area. I have traveled 25 miles just to have one. The decor is not much to brag about but the burgers are delicious as are the pies. Pros: good food, good service more

Great Hickory Burger 12/31/2002

Hickory burger with cheese. The best. Also, great apple pie. A little pricy but worth it. more

The Archetypal Hamburger 12/29/2002

The ambience, which has changed little in over 60 years is as much a part of the experience as the food itself. Walking through its old creaky doors, diners are greeted to a semi-square counter with red stools. Servers are effiecient but sometimes aloof. Behind the counter, you can watch your food being prepared exactly as you ordered it. The height of the experience though, is the first few bites into a Hickory Burger, with its slightly toasted bun that gives way to crisp iceberg lettuce, and then, into a deliciously consistent meat patty. This may not be the absolute best (and certainly not the biggest)hamburger around, but it is marvelously constructed and tastes just as good. Given the quality of the food along with the nostalgic atmosphere, you simply can't go wrong. more

21 year favorite 12/18/2002

Glad to know it's still there! I was a regular way back when, loved those cheesburgers and apple pie, simply the best! I'm coming back for more. Pros: inexpensive, delicious, consistent Cons: crowded, tough to park, noisy more

Don't bother 12/13/2002

This place is really not great. The bugers are dry, the service sucks, whats all the fuss about? more

Not worth it 12/12/2002

I agree with user ""Surf"", it's not worth it for what you get. Overpriced. Your money is better spent at Fatburger, In-N-Out, Tommy's, or Big Tomy's (in that order). Any of these will be cheaper and at least as tasty. Cons: Expensive more

Don't relish this Burger 12/5/2002

Don't relish this Burger, really a good burger, caught by surprise though by the relish, seemed more at place on a hot dog. Loved the atmosphere, but when it is crowed you have a tough time finding parking. Service is excellent, even when crowded. more

????? 11/20/2002

Took a bunch of friends there, expecting some good burgers. Nothing spectacular. Just regular burgers that you can get in any town. Disappointed!!! more

Sinful Burgers 11/16/2002

Forget about decor, fancy service, sparkling conversation... When it's all about the burger, this is the place! more

the best ever 11/10/2002

Apple pan has had the same service, servers, and burgers for the past 20 years. When u go there the atmosphere there is burger lover of the famous apple pan hickory sauce of all times more

Cinammon Overdose 11/9/2002

The Apple pan is a terrific lunch restaurant. Don't be in a hurry and bring cash. But get a Hickory,(burger), fries and a slice of Apple Pie with extra juice. Forget dinner that night, but it is the bomb! I used to deliver Coca Cola and I saw all the LA restaurants in the back. The Apple Pan was one of the most appetizing kitchens I have seen or smelled. Each morning they make the Apple pies fresh and the smell was almost like some kind of drug. You could hardly leave!! Try it. more

Gotta go. 11/7/2002

I'd heard about this LA landmark for months, and being on my own personal burger quest, I finally came around. I love the atmosphere, the zippy yet friendly waitstaff at the counter, the no-frills presentation (getting a burger slapped down in front of you with no plate is just fun in itself). The burger, with its thick cheddar slice, relish, and that weird sauce which I still haven't figured out what it is, was also a winner. A ""real"" burger joint in the middle of a whole lot of fake. Pros: Old-school feel, Burgers Cons: Might have to wait, Parking? more

no way! there's much better places! 11/6/2002

You've got to be kidding?! This is an average coffee-shop type restaurant. more
