This must be a joke- ""best burger LA?"" 3/6/2009

Something is dreadfully wrong with the rating of this restaurant. I have been meaning to get a burger here for years. I have always been thwarted by the lack of parking or crowd at the counter. I finally made it here yesterday with my wife and we were extremely unimpressed. The burger was really small! It costs $6.50(ala carte)for a burger the size of a McDonalds regular hamburger with lots of lettuce added. You get no fries for that price. It actually tasted ok, although overpowered by pickles and condiments. But, it is $11 for the same amount of food in a Happy Meal. And no I dont think McDonalds is great, I am just using it for a size comparison. I think it is the old world 1940's charm drawing in the crowds. ""The Counter"" in Santa Monica had a significantly better burger. Dont believe the hype surrounding The Apple Pan! Pros: old world charm Cons: value and parking more

Go somewhere else for your hamburger or pie...You've been warned... 12/23/2008

I just ate at the Apple Pan on Pico in Los Angeles tonight, and yes the burger and fries were very good?not the best?but very good, but they will NEVER see my George Washington?s again and here is why: A single patty basic hamburger, size no greater than the single at In & Out Burger or a single at Wendy?s or McDonalds that only comes with lettuce, pickles, mayo and their sauce costs $6.50! I added small fries to that for $2.20 and no drink, no cheese and nothing else?came to an unreasonable $9.30 with tax, not including a tip for the gruff service. \r \r After I left, I felt that I was really taken, or as my mother would say, ?they have some nerve!? This Apple Pan hamburger and fries tastes just the same and not better than the one at In & Out Burger all over California and if you go there?the same exact single burger and fries would cost you less than $3.50! Now folks, please keep these other things in mind. Add a slice of cheese: $60 cents and a drink: $ 1.75 and you will walk out of there paying $12.00 for a thin fried burger, small fries and a drink. Still hungry?order their Apple Pie Slice: $5.00 a slice. Now, $5.00 is not bad for a nice sized slice with chucks of apples, but not the small 3-4 fork serving that they give you there. Now your bill is up to almost $18.00 with tax, and no tip. $20.00 for one person to have a complete hamburger meal at this place: As my mother your say again: ?They have some nerve!? But folks--It gets worse?there are NO TOMATOES. (In & out on the 1.75 burger has a tomato or two.) I ask the waiter who says, ?use the sauce.? \r \r Go somewhere else unless you have a lot of money to burn or want to walk away hungry?there is nothing historic , fun or memorable about this place except how you paid 3x the price for a fast food hamburger and how they are probably still laughing at you.\r more

Burger Paradise--and Great Grumpy Waiters 12/4/2008

For those of you who were waited on by the ""grumpy old waiters"", do us a favor and don't come back to the Apple Pan. You obviously haven't been waited on by the professional staff (Gordon or Hector, among others) over the past thirty years. These guys are pros, the burger is the center of the universe for those of us who know burgers. Thanks for offering your opinions, but just don't take up a seat at the counter and keep the rest of us waiting.\r MA Pros: Hickory Burger with Cheese, Apple Pie Cons: Parking more

Hands down the best burger and pie in L.A. 12/4/2008

The Apple Pan has been around for at least 50 years. Same guys have been the servers for almost that many. Quick service, consistency, quality ingredients, and amazing burgers and pie. I've been going there for 20 years. Pros: Hickory Burger, Steak Burger, Tuna Sandwich, and all Pies Cons: They need a ""take a number"" system to seating. more

a burger plus pie makes me very happy 11/14/2008

i love the old-school charm of this place and cannot resist the burger (nothing fancy, everything just right) and the cream pies. Pros: everything more

Women beware!! Don't be mistreated by grumpy old waitors with no manners. Horrible attitude. 10/17/2008

I completely agree with the last review. We also had a grumpy old waiter. This individual doesn't say a whole lot and has a thick accent. I have heard from others how rude he is when he is upset. Ironically, they all were women.\r \r I thought this place was convenient late at night and a casual place to drop by. Last time, I drove 1 hour to eat there. I was with my girlfriend on a nice date when the nightmare began.\r \r We ordered full meals and were enjoying our drinks when we were told that after one coffee we had to buy a full order of another coffee or leave. We were not even there for twenty min and did not even digest our food. We were still thinking about eating pie. Well, this waiter started to yell out that we had to eat and leave for other customers to have a seat. I went to the bathroom and while I was gone he was rude to my date, yelled at her telling her to get up and signaling for other customers to come and take her place. When I came back I could tell something was wrong because she was standing . So I asked the waiter why he was being so rude and he didn't say anything. After I walked away from the situation while opening the door he started to yelled to everyone in the restraunt ""You eat, You Leave"". So, if you want to sit and relax and enjoy a nice meal stay away from Apple Pan. This is the worst service ever. It ruined our whole night. She was so upset of how he treated her and it was embarrasing. A NIGHTMARE!\r \r As for the food, it's a hamburger like any other served fast food style. Not worth it. Cons: Disrespectful staff, Food is just like any fast food but more expensive. Women Don't go alone!! more

Simple Comfort Food 10/15/2008

Apple Pan has simple yummy burgers and some of the best pie in town! Be prepared for some grease. And at least a 15 minute wait for your counter spot. Pros: heavenly pies Cons: crowded, dirty counters more

What kind of business is this?! 9/16/2008

I guess you get the service you pay for...If you got the chance to try the food! I read on MSN how great these burgers were, so this past Sunday Me, my husband and kids decided to take a drive out there all the way from the Riverside area(about an hour drive) to try these so called ""BEST"" burgers. When we get there, there is nowhere to sit, very small and no one to seat you, you have to wait till someone gets up and hound the people eating making sure someone else waiting will not steal the seats you are eyeballing! After 15 to 20 minutes, just enough seats open up (6) Since we were waiting for a while, I sent my kids over to the mall to use their restroom. As me and the hubby sat down, the waiter, a big old grumpy man asked us about the open seats. We told him we were waiting for the kids, and that we would just start ordering for them. He then started babbling and yelling "" I will not serve you, I wont, i wont serve you!"" I was like what? He kept saying it over again and I just got so mad and totally embarrassed that he started yelling at us like that, that we got up and left! We drove all the way out there for that!! I call the manager on the phone and get this, he says yes I know, and I know he is rude and mean! What?! Those people are so stupid! What kind of business is that? I would not reccommend this place at all!! I cant tell you if the burgers were good, since I was rudely ""not served"" but if you have a manager knowing he has a rude employee and telling a customer, what kind of business is that?!!!! By the way, they looked like In n Out Burgers to be quite honest! Pros: Across from the mall Cons: Rude, service is bad, small, nowhere to sit more

Really good burgers 9/14/2008

My husband read something on MSN about this place and since its right down the street from us we wanted to try it out. Over all really good food, everything on the menu is really good. The only bad thing that I have to say about the place is the seating is all bar seating in a U shape. We had our 7 month old daughter with us and there was no room for a stroller. It was also really smoky in there. So we ate as fast as we could to get out of there. Another thing is be prepared to stand and wait for a seat, because the seating is minimal. So the only reason why I didn?t get it 5 starts is because it?s not baby friendly. Pros: good food Cons: seating more

Best service and best burgers! 8/4/2008

Historic burger joint from the 40s. Service is snappy and the burgers are amazing. The apple pie is also to die for. Maybe not the best place for a romantic date, as only counter seating is available, and it is limited. Expect a wait during busy times. Pros: burgers, fries, value, cheap, fast, service, historic Cons: limited seating more

Apple Pan's Hickory Burgers are the best! 7/27/2008

After driving by the Apple Pan for years, my boyfriend and I finally made it to the famous diner, and all because of a blurb we read in the current issue of Sunset Magazine. Yes, it's pricey, but the burgers were worth it. We ordered the hickory burger and a steakburger ($6.75 each), plus two orders of fries ($2.50 each), which we could have easily split. We didn't save room for the pie that time, but we will someday soon. \r \r The biggest downside for us was the seating situation -- it was awkward and a bit cutthroat. But as soon as we sat down and ordered our food, everything fell into place. If you're someone who needs a lot of attention and likes to be waited on, this may not be the place for you. On the flip side, if you consider yourself thick-skinned and someone who likes to get to the heart of matters quickly, then you might really enjoy the old diner experience that the Apple Pan has to offer. more

THE MOOD IS SUPERB 4/21/2008

Best joint ever! I had my first cheeseburger there. DA BABWEY ID DA BET! This is just to get to the 100 characters that I need to write the review. Pros: IT'S GREAT more

Good but not great 3/22/2008

The burger is good, don't get me wrong but what you pay for, In-n-out gets my vote. Thrity dollars for two people ( no Alcohol) shared fried and one slice of pie......meaning, its not that good. \r \r Cool place but too pricey for what you get. more

Been going here since before I can remember! 3/4/2008

I guess there are ""all kinds"", but the person who reviewed Apple Pan with the heading ""the worst"" is definitely NOT my kind of guy/gal!! My grandma started taking me to this restaurant when I was still a pre-schooler (was there such a thing in the 50's?). We walked from her home on Military Ave. where I would stay with her on the weekends. I have always loved their Hickory Burgers and even the grumpy old men who prepare and serve them. I can still picture in my head one of the waiters from my childhood. I've lived on the east coast now for almost 35 years but try to get to West L.A. whenever I can while visiting famly in So-Cal, just to savor another Hickory Burger and childhood memories. Still love the burgers there!!! Pros: Great Food Cons: Have to wait for a seat more

Great Hamburger Joint 2/27/2008

I had the Hickory Burger and split fries with a friend, was full and loved the food. Seating can be a bit of a free for all, and you should go in with the expectation that you?re swooping in on people?s seats as soon as they're done. It is a bit overwhelming ordering the first time and you need to know what you want, otherwise you will feel rushed by the guy behind the counter (keep in mind, they just want to feed you and get you out quick to make room for new people).\r \r A few reviews complained either about the lack of menu selection or quality of food (actually, it was because of those reviews that I felt compelled to enter my own review). All I have to say is that this is an old fashioned hamburger joint, and what you see is what you get. If you?re looking for a gourmet burger experience, well, this isn?t Father?s Office. I went in there just for the food left satisfied and would of course return.\r Pros: Great burger Cons: Getting a seat more

The worst 2/16/2008

I felt compelled to write my first review, do not waste your time with this dive. How this place has stayed in business 50+ years is beyond me, I don't understand how it made it even 50 days. I went with a friend not long ago, we've both eaten a few burgers in our time, and we both agreed that this was, by far the worst burger we have eaten since high school (remember the soyburgers at the school cafeteria?). I would not recommend this place to anyone, even if the food was free. Pros: I don't ever have to go back Cons: bad bad hamburgers, did I say bad? more

Meh... 2/14/2008

So first off...I don't eat beef, and I KNOW people say these are great bugars and I can't judge that. I came here at lunch with 3 of my co-workers. The seating...I understand; that's the way it is. There's just not that great of selection, it's WAY over priced (almost 20 bucks for two people and I didn't get a drink or burgar!) and you leave smelling like meat the rest of the day. Pros: Good Burgar? Location Cons: Size & Smell more

Excellent burgers & fun atmosphere 2/13/2008

My husband and I go to Apple Pan a couple times a month. The burgers and tuna sandwiches are wonderful. The servers have worked there forever. Its nice to be able to see the same people each time we go to a favorite spot. Very old school. Pros: Great food, classic atmosphere, unique experience Cons: parking, 20 min wait sometimes, cash only more
