Well,,, my friends have talked about this place for a while and here is what I found for myself. \r A super old waiter who doesn't seem like you deserve an explanation of anythin...

not impressed 3/19/2006

I read that the apple pan was the best burger in L.A. I went with my hubby and little girl. Found parking in the lot, found three seats at the bar but the guy behind the bar just wanted us to hurry up and order. We got our burgers in this little wrapper and it was ok but not worth over $6.00 each. The bill was high for what you could get at an In and Out for less than half of that plus you leave a tip. I kept feeling rushed and I felt as if the guy was gonna yank the food and cash out of our hands. I would not return. more

The best restaurant in L.A. and here's why. 3/4/2006

Look at the date on the menu. 1947. Got it right the first time. Left it that way. Order a burger, fries, an IBC Root Beer and then finish it all off if you can with a slice of apple pie with vanilla ice cream. This is life what is all about. more

The Only Burger In LA that I Order 2/28/2006

Yes. The Apple Pan's burgers cost more than at a fast food joint, the waiters are surly, the free parking is usually taken and you will probably have to wait for seating if you arrive at a peak time. So why do people literally line up to eat there? Because they make great food. It's that simple. Try not to arrive during a lunch or dinner rush, order the Hickory Burger with cheese or the Steak Burger if you don't like sauce, fries well done and a piece of pie if you have room. I don't recommend the sandwiches, but get one if you don't eat red meat. You wil have an awesome meal and will enjoy it surrounded by a great cross section of west Los Angeles. Pros: food Cons: parking, waiting at peak times more

A waste of calories and money 2/26/2006

I'm not sure what all the hype is about. Just because your father has been going there since the '60's doesn't mean it's a great spot (he may just not be that well traveled) and they may have been charging real world prices back then. After waiting a short while we rolled up to a couple of stools and perused the short menu of items. Can it be true? $6.50 for a hamburger $6.50 for a tuna salad sandwhich. Is that Kobe Beef and Albacore Tuna? Nope, just plain stuff that wasn't anything special. With our $2.00 small fries and tap water to drink, our total was near $17.00! Had planned on a piece of pie, but $5.50 a slice???? I would, but this is not a place to slowy savor food as pie should be. Will I be back? Not in this lifetime. Pros: fast service Cons: price, parking, not comfortable more

NO NO NO! Stay Away! Rip off! 2/25/2006

What a colossal rip off! People go here because it's a tradition and are thus willing to pay high prices for below average food. Why pay $6 bucks for a small burger and $2 bucks for a small plate of fries that aren't as good as In-N-Out? The servers rush you to finish your meal and you constantly have people hovering behind you waiting for your seat. Maybe to some people that's what gives this place ""character"". Don't fall for all the hype. I ignored the negative reviews and now I regret it. more

APPLE PAN IS THE BEST EVER PLUS SEVEN 1/3/2006

Anyone that is saying the food is not worth it is just a regular customer who is attempting to sully the reputation of The Apple Pan in hopes that the line will get shorter. Sometimes there is a bit of a wait and it is honestly the only bad thing about this place. If you people didn't sit there for 5 days after your meal was done and just TALK then the wait time would be cut done. I mean seriously, I NEED MY HAMBURGER, DAMMIT, MOVE! Secondly, anyone here that can make a better hamburger than the Apple Pan, please e-mail me and I will gladly come worship you, for you must be an impressive god of sorts. To the person who claimed Fatburger made a better burger, LOL @ that. Pros: Food is delicious, The pies are yummy, Employees are swell! Cons: The wait can be long more

my favorite place on the planet 12/30/2005

been going to the apple pan literally my whole life--my dad used to go when he was in high school, and i was practically raised on the steak and hickory burgers, each well worth the 6 bucks...each sauce also doubles as a better option than ketchup for fries, which should be ordered well done. the banana cream pie is the singular best desert I've ever had, although the apple is clearly their namesake. i'll admit the prices continue to rise and parking and waiting or sometimes a hassling issue, but the Apple Pan is a true gem. also a great late-night date spot for some coffee. Pros: Steak/Hickory Burger, Banana Cream Pie, Vintage Cash Register Cons: Some parking issues more

good burgers not great-- not cheap.. 12/11/2005

i like the apple pan the burgers are good, the cone glasses they used to (maybe still) use are really cool, but its not a cheap place to eat. They pretty much nickle and dime you for everything and for two people you'll pay around $27 for burgers fries and sodas. Dont ask how it happens it just does. Cheese is like 1.25 extra, etc.. maybe its more.. I think its a good place and the burgers are really very decent but its not quick (sometimes a line) and you feel a little goofy for spending almost 30 bucks on a few burgers afterwards. Pros: good burgers, cone shaped glasses, tillamook cheese Cons: ugly customers, semi pushy waiters, parking is tough more

Over-rated! 12/8/2005

This place has great french fries, pies, and atmosphere. But my advice is not to go there for the burgers. They are so underwhelming and average, if not below average - definitely not worth going out of your way for. I could cook a better burger myself. Barney's Gourmet Hamburgers, Tommy's, and Fatburger are all FAR superior to Apple Pan, and are also in the inexpensive price range. Pros: great cheap fries Cons: underwhelming burgers, scarce parking, crowded more

Authentic burger stand.... 11/25/2005

After finding the Apple Pan listed here on citysearch, I decided to give it a shot. Wow my friend and I was very impressed. When we arrived at the location we were surprised to find patrons sitting in a horse shoe shaped setting. There was patrons waiting to eat standing behind patrons who were either eating or in the process of leaving. We waited for a seat for approximately ten minutes and was seated. From that time, it was ten minutes before we received our food. I had the steak burger and my friend had the house burger. Both was exceptionally good. We shared french fries which was big enough for two people. The old timer working the counter appeared to be rude (intentionally) LOL but it added a unique style to the place. Both of us including ice tea it was a little under $25 a must go. Pros: Food, Authentic Svs more

An LA Classic 11/2/2005

There are very few AUTHENTIC restaurants left but this is one of the few in LA. They not only serve the best burgers _and_ fries in LA, they also have some of the very best pies. All in a wonderfully authentic vintage atmosphere--like stepping back in time. Sit on the right side and let Hector serve you--he's been there for almost 30 years and is lighting fast. If you're a regular you don't even need to order--he already knows what you want. There's even free off-street parking. So if you want a REAL L.A. experience, it's The Apple Pan Pros: Food, Ambiance, Service Cons: Wait more

GOOD AND FAST 10/17/2005

Apple Pan was recommended by my wife's doctor because he is also on a quest for the best burgers in southern California. We sat at the counter and received fast service, but quickly learned it is cash only here. But no worries because there is a bank right next door with an ATM. Burgers were good and juicy and the pie was tasty. If you are up for a good burger with no frills and don't care that this isn't a high priced themed restaurant this is the place to go. Pros: fast, inexpensive, good food Cons: parking more

Extremely Average... 7/24/2005

Having heard so many positive things about the Apple Pan, we decided to give it a try. The wait was not extraordinarily long and we were seated at the counter. The atmosphere is bland, but decent. The food, however, is completely overrated. Don't get me wrong, the burgers are good, but definitely not great. I would rate their burgers as a 6 out of 10, whereas In 'n Out's burgers are 9 out of 10. If you're nearby and don't want McDonald's, try the Apple Pan. But if you're expecting something fabulous, don't go there. Definitely a disappointment... Cons: taste more

THE HICKORY CHEESE BURGER RULES! 7/21/2005

Ignore some of the GHETTO Reviews here. Idiots complaining that they drove too far & didn't like the Food or Service. GOOD! Don't Come Back! Less Traffic, More Parking, and Vacant Seats for the People who enjoy an Excellent Burger in a place where time & flavor has never changed. Get the Banana Creme Pie if You have room! Pros: One of a Kind, FUN, Tasty more

We love the Apple Pan! 7/18/2005

We eat at the Apple Pan as often as possible. We always bring our friends here for the best burgers in town. It's been here forever, and well, so have I, so it's GREAT to have something that stands the test of time. Bravo Apple Pan..keep that great food coming! YUMMY!!! Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Crowded more

BY FAR THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!! 7/7/2005

Apple Pan's Hickory Burger is the best! Add Fries and Apple Pie a la mode YUMMY!!!!!!!!!! The drive (I live 20 miles away) & wait is well worth the food! Delicious!! Just writing about it makes me want to drive there for a burger, I think I will. Pros: Hickory Burger, Apple Pie, Ambience Cons: parking, parking, parking more

You gotta be kidding 7/6/2005

one of the most overrated restaurants I think I've ever been to. The food is marginal at best and the pie, ugh. Apparently alot of people with little taste go there. I went once with a friend from work after hearing about the place. Neither one of us will ever go back. Just plain bad!!!!! more

Big Fan 6/17/2005

I'm a big Apple Pan fan. The ""diner"" atmosphere, cheap prices, and yummy pies for dessert always cause cravings long after I've made my last visit. Since I try to only eat burgers once a month I always look forward to my next visit. It can get crowded during prime dinner time but the wait is usually brief. It's fast food without the fast food feel. more

Apple Pan is the apple of my eye! And stomach 6/7/2005

The Hickory without cheese is the best burger in L.A. No question about it. more

average 5/16/2005

Heard a lot about here and I'm usually disappointed when I'm given the heads up on places. Apple Pan was no exception. My curiosity was always piqued when I passed by it's rustic store front and I finally decided to stop by and try the burger. The place was fairly busy but it was strangely quiet and sullen. I ordered my burger and fries. Expecting a big and sloppy burger, I instead got something that looked as if i got it at a carnival booth. Eating it was a different story. It was actually tasty. The fries were so-so. Although it was better than average, I can't say I was impressed enough to start preaching it's gospel. I might stop by for a quick bite again if I'm in the area. Worth a try. Pros: parking, good burger more
