The minute you step into the Apple Pan, you forget you're in the middle of the uppity Westside. The waiters are old, curt, and not overly gracious, and the decor, as noted by other reviewers, probably hasn't changed much since its inception in 1947. The vinyl chairs at the counter are a little loose on their bases, the drinks are served in paper cones and styrofoam cups, and you don't even get a plate for your burger--it's in straight paper wrapping. Overall, a cool and unique place, especially in this part of LA.\r

But beyond the setting, the Apple Pan isn't unique enough for the price you pay. Burgers are no better than In and Out, and are blown out of the water by Fatburger--they're done on a griddle, so they're soft and greasy rather than rich and roasty. Fries are perfectly crispy and creamy on the inside, and the apple pie is well spiced with crisp crust, but come on... I went with two friends, and between us, we had three burgers, two plates of fries, two drinks, and two slices of apple pie, all of which was good, but not spectacular. Our bill? A cool $50 with tax and tip. For $50, I'm heading toward the Nook, which is a gourmet burger worth paying for.
Pros: unique setting, gruff old waiters
Cons: price, run-of-the-mill food, very limited menu options
