Awesome German Food 11/29/2008

The food and service are excellent. Everything I have tried on the menu has been great and the portions are enough for two people. The restaurant just recently expanded and is now taking reservations, which was much needed because the restaurant is always busy. The atmosphere is always cheerful, full of happy diners, and loud with conversation, laughter and music. I highly recommend this restaurant, especially for groups. Pros: Food, service, ambience Cons: A little expensive...$20+ per dish more

Service with a bad attitude and substandard food 12/17/2007

The attitude of the female manager or owner and that compounded with the worst Kaesepaetzle I have ever eaten, made for a bad night. I was really looking forward to going there, and would never go back. She was nasty to begin with when we arrived ahead of our friends who had made reservations (although there is a chance that my friend might have been confused as they do not take online reservations it seems). She had an attitude then, and it got really bad when my food arrived, Kaesepaetzle, just a horrible version of that dish, and she came by to ask if everything was okay (my friend ordered venisson, and got beef instead but they insisted it was venisson) and I told her it was not good. She told me some nonsense about this is how they make them in Munich, and I disagreed, and she reprimanded me and was downright nasty. \r \r I would never go back there. Pros: nice interior decoration - Austrian/Bavarian style Cons: Bad food, bad service more

Best German Restaurant to get Schnitzel and more!!!!! 11/12/2007

I had the Schnitzel and German Bratwurst it is perfect , for the lest Review your get Leberkas ???? I se your never NO German Food !!!! Pros: Food Cons: Preis more

Worst food, worst service, overpriced food, horrible HORRIBLE experience 11/12/2007

We waited forever to get a seat (over an hour, even though there were empty tables), and the only reason we stayed to get seated was that it was raining outside. The owner was very rude and when we finally got a seat, we were promptly ignored for another 30 minutes. \r \r The food was HORRIBLE. My friend ordered sausage and got anemic looking hotdogs that weren't even cooked. It looked like they were boiled for about 2 minutes. I ordered meatloaf and got batter-fried pink ham. They gave me the wrong dish!\r \r Disgusting is the best way to describe the food. \r \r The service was beyond bad. A couple next to us got into a fight because she was upset her boyfriend wasn't yelling at the waiters. \r \r Don't try this place out. Go to Walzwerk instead. Pros: Horrible place, I cannot think of one good thing to say. Cons: Food, service, price more

Fun Filled Atmosphere, with the best German in Town Hands Down! 2/20/2007

My partner and I have come to San Francisco the past 3 years with our friends and Schnitzel Haus is always on our list of must Do's! The moment you walk in the atmosphere is German, and you start to feel right at home! The Waitress and Waiter are very attentive and ultra friendly! We even got them to come party once they closed! No matter who was in the restaurant you never felt like a stranger as you could talk to other tables etc.. just a very festive atmosphere! On to the Food: Awesome doesn't even start!! I was oh so good!! and to top it off, if you are lucky you may even get a special treat from the waitress! (yodle) Anyhow, all in all 10 out of 10 and we will be back next year! Pros: Fun filled Atmosphere Cons: Limited Seating Capacity more

Authentic? No Way! 11/1/2006

By far anywhere near authentic Austrian or German food, a mixture of Austrian-German dishes, with questionable taste (Wiener Schnitzel with anchovy sauce -- holy smokes), prepared for the American palate every Austrian or German finds a bit strange: sweetened meat, strange combination of spices, weird combinations of meat and supplements, far far from traditional. Now, excellent assortment of beer (especially this Austrian Stiegl, oh boy), and wonderful selection of wines (again, try the Austrian Gruner Veltliner-goes with most of the food-delicious). No dishes for the youngsters though, and if they are not accustomed to Austrian-German stuff, theyll have hard time on finding something theyd like. Lastly the price: its difficult to understand why it has to be so expensive; its neither upscale nor exotic enough to justify such high prices. Conclusion: will definitely come back, if not for food and price, but for beer and wine. Pros: beer, wine, some food Cons: price, no kids menu, greasy tables more

Great German Schnitzel 8/4/2006

I'd never been to a German Restaurant, so this was a great introduction. I had the Schnitzel with egg and it was wonderful. For those of you non-schnitzel eaters, the pork schnitzel they serve is very similar to chicken cutlets, except it's pork and the cutlets are thinner and denser. The salad before dinner was a little mundane, but other than that, I highly approve of this place. The potatoes and cabbage were good, as was the apple cider. And they give you a ton of Schnitzel! And the ambience is just what it should be: happy and convivial. It is a little pricey, but I feel they honor authenticism and they serve up hearty plates, so that makes up for the price. Pros: Authentic German Food Cons: A little pricey more

Tasty Food but price-y-er than you'd expect for what you get. 7/22/2006

First, I was disapointed to find out that the Schnitzel is made with Pork, as opposed to the traditional Veal, particularly considering the price - starting at $17 and going up from there. Portion size of the schnitzel was huge, you could easily split one schnitzel plate between two people with an extra side or two. \r \r We ordered the Hunter's Schnitzel, breaded ($19) and a Sausage Plate ($12 if I remember correctly.) The sausage was tasty, the saurkraut it was served with was well flavored, and the roasted potatoes were excellent, as was the potato soup we were started with. The Hunter's Schnitzel was excellent, crispy and good with a mushroom gravy served on top. The Spatzle was hohum, (and a trifle bland to boot), and the red cabbage was a trifle too sweet for my tastes, but if you like sweet german style red cabbage, you'd probably like it. It had a nice flavor, just not my cup of tea. \r \r Service was good at first, the wait person was full of helpful suggestions on what to order, however, she disapeared after bringing us our meal, leaving my glass empty nearly the whole meal, which I found odd because it wasn't as if it was busy (It was late Saturday afternoon, and we were the only customers.) \r \r Anyhow, the food *was* good, just not exactly on par with what I thought it was worth.\r Pros: Food is tasty Cons: Not quite worth what you pay more

Bavarian transplant 1/21/2006

Having lived in Bavaria for 30 years, it is refreshing to see that Walter (owner) has managed to bring the ambiance and essence of relaxed german dining to SF. The dishes at our table were tasty and timely. The prices not outragous and the wait staff friendly. If one needs to go out of his way to find anything negative then it is that the restaurant does not serve any Schnapps. To that ""Prost"" Walter and keep up the great work. Pros: elaborate german menu, fresh ingredients, great service Cons: no SCHNAPPS more

Sehr gut! A must for anyone visiting SF! 12/6/2005

A fantastic meal of Rehragout (deer ragout), a giant beer, and wonderful conversation in this quaint Bavarian-style restaurant made for a superior evening. I have never had such good German food in many years! Don't miss out on this culinary gem! Pros: Food quality, Service, Atmosphere more

Delicious German food!!!! 8/22/2005

This restaurant has some of the best (if not the best) German food I have ever had! My husband and I were in town for our honeymoon and actually ate here three times during our trip because we loved it so much! The owner and waitress are very nice. The beer is great, the food is great.....everything is delicious! Pros: food, beer, people more

Authentic, consistent, and relaxing 8/3/2005

Having lived in Munchen for several years, we tested all of the area's German restaurants when we moved here and found Schnitzelhaus to be, by far, the most authentic and best value. Plenty of street parking, and the owner's personal attention makes you feel like you're a guest in his home in Austria. Everything we've ordered is fantastic, but our favorites are the Rundergulasch (beef stew) and Holsteinschnitzel (breaded cutlet with egg), which come with a great starter (potato soup) or salad. The crowd is always interest, but the beer hall tunes make for a festive atmosphere even when it's not very crowded. We're lucky to have discovered this gem in 1998, and part of its charm is that it has not changed a lick even now that the word is out. If you're looking for the best German food and authentic atmosphere around, Schnitzelhaus will not disappoint. Pros: Authentic food, Atmosphere, Convenience more

best schnitzel in town, but the potato soup... 6/27/2005

I've been a big fan of Schnitzelhaus for several years, and while San Francisco is strangely blessed with great German restraunts, this is certainly the best. The schnitzel is of course the house specialty, and while their jaegerschnitzel is one the best executions of this dish, the non schnitzel items are exceptional too. Make sure and get the Potato soup which is really spectacular. The dining room is quite intimate, but even at it most crowded it is very comfortable. Gemutlich is the word. Pros: Potato Soup, perfect schnitzel, intimate more

The best German Food in the City 6/21/2005

I love this place. It take me back to Germany evertime I step in the restaurant. The food is great they have such a nice waitress and great beer, what more can I say. more

All Good Things 6/15/2005

This is one of the most reliable, good quality food resturants in San Francisco. You can always count on good attitude, good food, clean/comfortable environment. The food is always right on from quality, quantity, and flavor. We take all out of town visitors and locals who have not experienced this little jewel. Everyone we take always goes back. Pros: Food quality, friendly attitude Cons: nothing really more

An Oasis of Cheer in SOMA 6/12/2005

Schnitzel Haus is like home with better food. The sauerbraten is always perfect - almost melts in your mouth. The potato soup is heavenly. The beer is the best in the world. The spaetzl is wonderful. Both the red cabbage & sauerkraut are excellent. German sausages are cooked just right. The ambiance an oasis in otherwise naughty SOMA. (Cleanest bathroom south of market). It's perfect place to take mom or your buddies. Go alone, and surely you will feel like a part of the family. Take a table in the window and watch the never boring neighborhood - or face in and take in the Bavarian/Tyrolean atmostphere. There's something really satisfying about their hearty meals, generous portions, all washed down with great beer. If you can possibly manage dessert - their old-country apple strudel is always reliable. Pros: sinfully delicious, great portions, awesome beers more

A Boot of Beer 6/10/2005

This restaurant is incredible! My father spent part of the sixties in Germany. He introduced us to German food and culture by sending us there as early as second grade. He also requests to go to Schnitzel Haus when he visits. The service is warm, gracious, friendly, and very responsive. The pace is perfect for large groups, especially celebrations. The food, somehow, puts the service to shame! It is incredible, authentic German food with perfect German beers to match. The quantities are awesome (both beer and food), the flavor is incredible. Overall, this is the restaraunt in which to impress your guests with hospitality. Pros: FLAVOR, Service, GERMAN BEER Cons: TAXI's to and from, Busy Weekends more

excellent german food 6/9/2005

Hearty German Feast 6/9/2005

San Francisco has a lot of great food but every time I visit the city I try to make it to the Schnitzel Haus. The food is great (potato pancakes are awesome, as is the schnitzel, of course). Great beers on tap, and no visit is complete without a liter (or more) of great dark beer. This is the place for amazing German food! Pros: Beer more

Excellent authentic German/Austrian food!! 6/6/2005

I have been to many German restaurants on the US West Coast. Schnitzel Haus is by far the best! The food and atmosphere is very authentic and the food is awesome. The beer selection is great. If you want to experience authentic bavarian/austrian atmosphere, you are definitely in the right place, with a great cozy ambiente, pictures of Germany and Austria, German music and you can even get German beer in a ""Maß"" (1 Liter mug glass of beer). If you love soups, definitely try one at the Schnitzel Haus! And of course the Schnitzels are world class! Pros: Authentic, Great food and beer, Cozy Atmosphere more
