Pluto-Fast, good and somewhat easy on the wallet--at either location you won't go home hungry 9/26/2007

I have been to both locations and find either location identical. A nice alternative to restaurants with wait staff. The salads are really great, as you have a large variety of veggies to chooze from plus you can prevent the ""drowning"" of the salad by asking the preparer to ""go easy"" on the dressing or ask for it on the side. Two sizes of salads, small variety of bread to choose from to go to with salad. You may also add meat or chicken to the salads. sandwiches are also good, nice variety with contemporary combinations to round out. (hello pesto, peppers, horseradish, & varietal cheeses) Soups vary daily and can be overly cooked tasting, but still better than anything out of a can. Servings are generous sized. Vegetarian or Carvnivore will find something good to eat. Great for families as the noise level tends to be high if crowded, so one more crooning kid won't make a difference. Well priced for the city, two adults tend to be able to knock off dinner for around $12 but we don't buy into the high priced bottled drinks. Everything is ala carte, so you can mix whatever you want and come out happy. It's fun to get ""thanksgving"" any day of the week, turkey, mashed spuds, gravy and even a side of crannies! Staff is very friendly, seating area pretty clean, easy access to silverware, water etc. Pros: Excellent food choices, nice variety of menu items, accessible, fairly quick depending on when you are there Cons: Parking is a hassle at either location, salad dressing can be too much but staff will adjust, can be noisy when busy also open seating can be a problem when busy too. more

salads 8/7/2007

Best place for salads since all made to order and can get everything one wants ? even topped with meat! Narcissists go crazy! Everything is fresh. more

Great cheap eat! 10/19/2006

Yummy cheap eat! Fresh and healthy salads, soup, sandwiches, and sides make this place a goldmine. Custom-made salads are nothing less than a delicious bargain. Don't be intimidated by the staff's fast-paced cafeteria-style routine. They are quick, efficient, and accomodating...and they know how to move the bustling line of people. I crave this place at least once a week, something that is hard to do in a city with its great list of eateries. Don't miss out on this neighborhood must-have! more

Great Salad, Sandwich and Sides 5/20/2005

Been to both Pluto's in SF. I like the grilled chicken on foccacia and my wife gets a big salad with grilled steak customized to her tastes. (Inside tip: the one on Irving seems to more generous with the salad fixings.) It's no frills dining in a comfortable (a bit loud at times) atmosphere. Like a sports bar for heathy people. Garlic curly fries. Yummo. The desserts at the end of the line are very tempting but control yourself and you'll feel better for the rest of the day. We can all use a bit more ruffage in our diet. Pros: Healthy, Comfortable, No frills Cons: Parking more

Great salads/sandwiches/sides, no frills 3/6/2005

I'm not sure where all the complaints about the service are coming from. You don't go to Pluto's to be swept off your feet - it's cafeteria-style, after all. I think if you're clear with the people behind the counter they will accomodate your requests - but you have to be able to jive with the fast pace and sometimes hectic atmosphere to get your request across quickly and loudly. Pluto's is a great place to go to get a customized big salad, an offbeat and delicious sandwich, and possibly a side dish or two. It's not a place to take a first date or to expect to be pampered. If you want to skip the huge line in peak hours, phone in your order. Due to the nature of cafeteria-style ordering, you can jump the line and go right to the register, even if you plan to eat there. more

Perfect & Cheap 10/31/2003

I'm surprised anyone has service complaints here - I find all the service folks great. Food is cheap, generally healthy, tastes great, and I get it in a hurry. LOVE it. A city gem. more

Fab Food... 7/29/2003

Pluto's has great food - salads, mashed potatoes and stuffing are all delicious. It's very cheap and if you make good choices can be very healthy. Admittedly it's not big on service but when you stand in line to get your food I'm not sure how much service you can ask for. Overall is a GREAT value for the money. Pros: Great Food, Quick, Cheap Cons: Can be crowded, Limited Seating more

Salad store 6/5/2003

Good salad and decent sized portions. It is pretty straight-forward. Seems like it gets large after-gym crowd. The line is long and seating is limited. more

Good food, bad service 2/21/2003

You'll have to put up with the bad service (and rudeness) for the cheap and fresh food at Pluto. Salads are always great (with a variety of ingredients even like walnut). Take your chances if you want to put chicken on your salad though because I had always got rubbery chicken. Oh btw just stick with the menus and don't ask for substitution or extras or refill because they will ignore you. Pros: Fresh salads, Cheap eat Cons: BAD SERVICE, RUDENESS more

Best Quick Dinner 9/24/2002

Best salads with choice of grilled chicken or steak. Great homecooking. Pros: Inexpensive, Best Salads Ever more

HORRIBLE SERVICE/ Great Food 7/6/2002

If you like rude people that make you feel like you are lucky to be in their presense and good healthy food, go to Pluto's. Dont think about your order, dont change your order, dont ask for extra's, dont ask the cashier to refill your drink...just eat your food, damn it. Seriously, in a city with thousands (well, hundreds, anyway) of restaurants and hundreds of choices, you would think the art of service would be present; well, not at Pluto's. EVERY TIME we go there, the service and attitude is consistantly rude. Friends agree. But the food is great! So if you want good food and poor attitude, Pluto's is the place. Pros: good food Cons: service, poor attitude, rude more
