Best

Pesce is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. They have a great selection of fresh oysters (try a vodka shooter here!) and a decent wine list. You can't go wrong with any...

Okay Food, Small Portions 6/7/2004

First off, they shoved us into a dark dingy corner at the back of the restaurant. And to top it off, the portions were extremely small and pricey. Quality of food was slightly above average, but I have had much better at other San Francisco establishments. Pros: Friendly staff Cons: , small portions, pricey more

a MUST in SF 3/13/2004

where to begin on this absolute GEM of a place? I travel the country during business trips and eat at new places across the counrty almost every week and this place is one of a handful anywhere that I would easily call the best of it's kind! Go there, try 6-8 small paltes with a couple of friends, leave happy and if you're lucky enough to meet the owner "Reza", it'll complete your Pesce experience. Try the: grilled sardines, octopus salad, braised tuna and the smoked platter all with a glass of Toasted Head Chardonnay or the Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc and you'll thank me. more

Venice on Polk? 1/16/2004

If you're missing Venice, then come to Pesce! Wonderful seafood small plates, served by people with a passion for where they work. Fun, affordable, and innovative. They've also done a beautiful job with the decor. Mangia! Pros: variety, service Cons: parking more

Always a good time 11/7/2003

Fabulous oysters, excellent food, thoughful winelist, friendly yet efficient service. One of my favorites in SF. Pesce has expanded to a full liquor bar. Pros: Oysters, Service, Atmosphere more

craving seafood? go pesce! 7/16/2003

been here twice so far and enjoyed every plate! the service and the ambience is great but best of all is the food. very creative, fresh and just plain delicious. if you are a seafood fan and want to try some innovative dishes with the venetian influence, this place is a must! try the crab cakes, grilled sardines, drunken tuna, squid ink risotto, etc.... the menu also changes and they have a special of the day board to keep it fresh and new! i'll definitely keep on going back! Pros: fresh seafood, oyster shots Cons: parking more

small plates that aren't ripoffs 7/2/2003

Pesce serves up some of the tastiest and most creative small plates (Italian) that I've seen. Best of all, given the size of the small plates (larger than many other places) and the execution, the prices are reasonable (each of us paid $30, including tax, tip, and wine, and walked away full). I would definitely go back (wish it was in my neighborhood) and would definitely recommend you go. We had crab cakes, lamb shanks, English peas with bacon and carmelized onions, and a smoked fish platter, but the standouts were the olive gnochi with rock shrimp and the dungeness crab on top of a crisy risotto pancake. Get those last two! Desserts were fine but not outstanding. The best was strawberries with zabaglione and sweet balsamic vinegar. Service is efficient, not over-friendly, not overbearing. The restaurant is a little loud, and tables are on the small side. more

Bring a Skinny Date 12/31/2002

The food was o.k. The services was o.k. The ambience was o.k. But WOW great bathrooms!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pros: Crab Cakes, Oysters Cons: small dishes more

Eat Here - Period. 12/2/2002

It is consistently delicious, probably some of the best, straightforward food in San Francisco. Truly, eating at Pesce is a delightful experience. It is so nice that someone in this business is paying attention! Pros: simple, delicous food, chic atmosphere, great sangria more

IF YOU SKIP THIS PLACE IT IS YOUR LOSS 11/21/2002

Absolutely one of the best meals I have ever had in the city. This little known place is just the find me and my friends were looking for -- neighborhood atmosphere, authentic Italian seafood (if "real" Italian is your crave), friendly service and best of all, great prices. What's different about this place is the small plates allow you to have a bunch of great tates vs. the typical standard 2 to 3 course thing. Best bests: Swordfish rolls, Bacala; Halibut and my friends favorite, the Cioppino. Wish you well, don't hang out for long as others will flock and then I'll have to wait in line for dinner. Pros: Awesome Italian Food, Great Wine List, Knowledgable Servers Cons: A Little Load, Parking more

Fab, fun, and fresh! 11/19/2002

Pesce was so much fun!! Not only was there a sense of warmth and friendliness inside, but everyone seemed to be having actual fun...like in a beer commercial. It seemed as though everyone was thoroughly enjoying the food and the service and the vibe that was going on. The crab cakes were from heaven, the scallops were the freshest I'd ever had, and the scalloped potatoes were so great, they beat even mom's. I can't wait to go back and have the vanilla bean gelato again! The service was so attentive and full of smiles that I felt like I had met a new best friend. Pesce was a warm, fun, young, and cozy place to have a drink, eat some fab fare, and spy on the hip crowd of San Francisco. See and be seen! more

Beauty in simplicity 9/16/2002

I have just had a 30th B-Day celebration with about 50 people at Pesce and let me say everyone should have a party here. I have dined at both Antica and Pesce a number of times and never tire of them. The food is some of the best in the city (and the most straight forward) and the family-like service is very good. The Squid Ink risotto and the Scropino are amazing at Pesce! These guys know how to do it! Pros: Great Value, Food and Wine, Parking Options more

THE BEST ITALIAN SEAFOOD! 8/13/2002

If Venetian style dishes are your desire than this is the only place to go. When we go to San Francisco we always trry to get into this spot but the lines were crazy. Now that they take reservations, we've been twice. Try the grilled calamari with potato and celery, and the halbut baked in an amazing tomato, wine and herb broth, the lamb shank with orzo, and the oyster shooters. Everything we ate here was wonderful. Go early on the weekends as it gets rather crazy later in the evening. Charming servers, good wind offerings Pros: good prices, take out available, fun atmosphere Cons: no parking, can get noisy more

Great Food, Ambiance and Sangria! 7/24/2002

As if the food wasnt incredible enough - the staff and crowd will create a great mood for night out on Polk Street. This is a friendly, stylish addition to the block, with a newly updated menu that will blow your socks off! I used to go before they changed the menu and now I like it even better! Small and large dishes are great for sharing and the wine list (and yummy Sangria too) are perfect. If you are lucky to get a seat outside on a warm evening its great for people watching- its a great place to hang out! Pros: Welcoming, Friendly, Stylish more

great for a balmy night 6/12/2002

I went there on a Tuesday night with some girlfriends. We sat outside and people-watched while drinking some good wine. The food was really good including the seared ahi on mixed greens ($15.50), a really great penne arrabbiata ($7), and a yummy caesar salad ($7). The wait staff was very friendly and easy-going. Definitely will be going back very soon. Pros: great food, friendly staff, great prices more

  • In Short
Diners can sit either at the zinc bar or in the mahogany dining room. The menu features the regional seafood cuisine of Venice, Italy--specifically the small-plate dishes known as "cicchetti." Akin to Spanich tapas, the Venetian specialty includes dishes like braised octopus salad with potatoes, celery and garlic-lemon vinaigrette, or seared day boat scallops on arugula with roasted fennel. Full-size seafood dishes are also available.
