I love this hotel. Right when you walk into the lobby, you're swept with the feeling for grandeur and romance. There's gold everywhere (I think i'm just particular to gold), and t...

Worst

This was my first time traveling to Las Vegas, my trip was booked as a package deal with 6 other family members, who have been to Las Vegas over 8 times.

Complete Disappointment 1/21/2008

I can't even tell you how great (or not great) the rooms were, because they sold my room to someone else because I didn't arrive at exactly 3pm for check in. I had pre-booked a spa suite online and they charged my credit card immediately. When we got there, the lady (who was like a robot, no personailty and completely unfriendly) began the rehearsed speach of "I apolgize for the inconvience, but your room is not available" when I asked why, she said "it could be because of maintenence or blah blah blah"...then she proceeded to tell me she was going to give us an "upgrade" to a different suite, which ended up being exactly like the standard room, just larger. She didn't even know WHY I couldn't get the room I had already booked and been charged for. I live and work in Death Valley National Park and the Furnace Creek Inn (another 4 Diamond Resort) and I can tell you we do not treat our guests like this. What they had done was overbooked in hopes that a certain percentage would cancel, just so they could stay booked. But unfortunately for me, too many people showed up for their reservations. No manager was around to deal with the situation. I ended up spending 2 hours in the parking lot trying to find another room. I ended up staying at the Rio, which was fantastic. The staff went above and beyond to get me the best room they had available, after telling them my issue from the MGM. Please, if you're going and wanting to check right into a room without hassle, DO NOT BOOK A ROOM AT THE MGM. You will be sorely disappointed. Pros: It looks nice. Cons: Poor Customer Service, Loyalty to Reservations, Compensation for their Error more

Disorganized, careful if you buy your tickets on-line 1/5/2008

Another NYE rant. We got out tickets on-line for five; The staff at the doors had us down for only 3 tickets, what would have happened if we did not have our on-line confirmations on hand? That?s a $300 mistake!! We wanted to gamble on the floor and then come back in and they told us that if they got packed they would not allow it. Seriously? At $150 a ticket? Yes, and what was up with the dance floor? A 4X6 space to dance on is ridiculous for a night club and that empty VIP section in the middle of the floor was a waste of space. Why? I will not go back. However, DJ Homicide rocked, it?s too bad there was nowhere to dance Pros: Great DJ Cons: Small dance floor more

Avoid at all cost! 1/3/2008

What a disappointing place to spend NYE 2008!!! I am still not sure what is it that they charge us for $150, because the only good thing about this place was a great DJ Homicide. There was absolutely no place to dance as the entire central part was blocked with tables and seats for ... yes, exactly who was it for ...Tabu Management people???????? Because except for few old dancers and later on 2 (two) aging sugar daddies nobody was there! Pros: Music Cons: Bad floor plan creates uncomfortable experience more

Lacked Consistency 1/1/2008

My wife and I visited the restaurant with four friends in October 2007. The food, the margaritas, the sangria, and service were EXCELLENT! We all ordered different appetizers, entrees, desserts, and drinks. We were impressed with each of the items. At the time, $$$$ was fit for the quality of the food & service. \r \r We returned two months later and found the sangria to have lost its luster (tasted more like a watered-down fizzy-punch) and the guacamole and main entrees (cochinita pibil & carne asada) to be fair. The service also lost its luster--our main entrees were served but a few minutes after our appetizer (the guacamole) was prepared/served. Unimpressed, this time, we felt $$$$ was far too much for our 'fair' experience. For the caliber the restaurant presents, it should hold up as such on any given night. Pros: ""Excellent"" in October 2007 Cons: ""Fair"" in December 2007 more

One of the best buffets in Vegas 12/26/2007

We went twice and had excellent experiences both times. The food was great. They have a large selection with good standards. We had Sunday brunch (mimosas/booze was an extra $3) and gorged on the made to order omelettes, hot waffles, bagels & lox, prime rib, shrimp, etc. Everything was quite good and the servers were very pleasant. Then we went back for XMas dinner. They set up a made to order mashed potatoes instead of omelettes... brilliant! Also, made to order strip steaks... delicious! Everything was fantastic, although I skipped the Mexican food since I'm from Texas. Next time I'll probably stay at MGM to be closer to the buffet. Pros: Great food, excellent service, tons of choices Cons: can be pricey and crowded on special occasions more

Worth a visit...if you're not paying 11/26/2007

Let's just say that overall, I was happy, but the hefty price tag left me with a little more to desire...thankfully, I was traveling on business, so the bill wasn't completely absorbed by myself. The service was prompt and the staff was quite friendly even if they were a little difficult to understand. The bar is well stocked and the signature key-lime martini is a fantastic after dinner drink. As for the food, it was both great & o.k. I thoroughly enjoyed the yellow fin tuna appetizer. The bone-in steak however was good...not great, and at $50+ for just the steak, I've had better (the chop house in Chicago comes to mind). Note that I also don't particularly care for pre-cut meat (I am a big boy and you gave me a knife), nor did I particularly care for the rosemary the steak was garnished with. The side of asparagus was o.k., but nowhere near worth the cost. Why did I select this place to eat at in the first place...well, it was the end of a long 2 week trip it was downstairs, and I wanted a good steak. That's what I got, a good steak and a hefty bill, but I will say again, that the tuna was a fantastic appetizer. Would I go back, probably not, and I wouldn't recommend it to someone traveling on their own dime. Pros: they take reservarions and the dress code is relatively liberal for ""fine dining"" Cons: hefty cost for an o.k. cut of steak more

Yummy! 11/5/2007

The food was really good! The atmosphere was pleasent and engaging. My girlfriend really likes sushi wheras I'm more like so-so on it. I like to find Japenese restaurants that have a little of both for us each. I oredered the salmon and black cod and my girlfrend had a soft shell crab roll and some other things and she thought it was really good. It wasn't as expensive as they write it up so give it a try! Pros: food and ambience was delicious Cons: Service good have been better more

Maybe Get Mediocre 11/5/2007

My girlfriend and I went to Vegas for the day. we went to the MGM because one of our friends highly suggested this particular hotel. We arrived in Vegast at about 2pm. The hotel was really confusing and we werent' quite sure where to go to check in. Someone finally ushered us over to the check-in. Our credit card didn't go through and the agent in her rush to process us she said we should just leave it open. Not knowing that doing so would mean that we could not use the internet. Our room was really far away from the elevator and it was apparent that the hotel had undergone renovations and the side of the hotel that we were on had obviously not been apart of the upgrade. The shower did not drain properly and overflowed when we took a shower. The room was not at all functional but the bed was super comfortable. The room let all the noise in. Very loud. I think next time we'll try a different hotel and see how that goes. Pros: convienant, good restaurants Cons: loud, pooer servoce more

Avoid At All Costs. (And Boy Does It Cost.) 10/25/2007

A profound disappointment. Based on Colicchio's reputation and a sampling of diner reviews -- including some from this site -- I organized a family reunion and dinner at Craftsteak. Should not have bothered. Almost every aspect of our evening was underwhelming. Let me count the ways. \r \r 1.) The service was horrifically slow. Although we were seated promptly, five minutes passed before a waiter arrived; another ten minutes passed before our drinks arrived; another 15 minutes passed before water and bread arrived. Perhaps we were being conditioned, because our appetizers then took another half hour and our entrees -- ta da! -- arrived almost two hours after we first sat down. \r \r 2.) The steaks, which as others have noted are almost comically expensive, were unevenly cooked. Granted, this meant that half the steak was wonderfully prepared, tender and tasty. But it also meant that half of the same steak was either overdone or dripping raw, not to mention tough and gristly.\r \r 3.) The ambiance is more akin to a Denny's then to place where the per-person check tops $100. The restaurant is theme-park sized, obviously far too large to competently staff. The din is horrible. Four times during out meal waiters dropped plates or glasses -- four times! These thundering events were followed by much shouting and rushing about by the wait staff, and then frenzied mopping and sweeping, complete with chemical aromas. \r \r I could go on and on, but I'm sure you get my drift. We felt cheated and taken for granted, and we're now soured on the whole Craft empire. Had we not gone as a family the next day to Mesa, at Caesar's Palace, the reunion would have been ruined. Happily, Mesa's was quiet, the staff was competent, and food cheaper and much better than at Craft. Had I only known that in advance. Ah, well. Cons: Cost, Ambience, Service, Noise more

beautiful scenery 10/1/2007

we walked by knowing nothing about the restaurant. We loved it. The waiter was great. Service was amazing. They knew the menu and everything they recommended was amazing. the sushi was soft and very tasteful. the dessert was really good too. the raspberry martini was really tasty. highly recommended. more

Class redefined. Not recommended for kids 9/19/2007

Just say Lobster Pie over and over again - this was glorious. The homemade bread, kept warm on the table with the beautiful selection of homemade butters. Extremely passionate staff regarding wines and the compilation of all the foods. The bar staff on arrival can make cocktails you haven't dreamt of and what tastes. Would suggest the quiet, curtained off side booths, your own heaven of glorious tastes and sublime wines to match.. You cannot help but enjoy...enjoy...enjoy Pros: Educate your food palate, savor the good times. Cons: Bright lighting, suggest side booths, which are intimate and keep the world away more

Great Lunch Spot! 9/8/2007

Great lunch//casual dinner spot! We stopped in for a quick lunch and this was perfect! You don't have to settle for bad food to have a semi-casual lunch or dinner in vegas! Our waiter recommended the truffle//blue cheese topped potato chips AND HE WAS RIGHT! They were unexpectedly amazing! Such a great little place to try during your stay in vegas! Pros: Great food, service & price Cons: None I saw more

best electronica music scene I've found in Vegas 8/8/2007

I thought this place was great. I came here on a Friday night with my sister and was bummed at first to wait in line, but then a guy came around and gave cards to all the ladies to get in free. Plus Oakenfold was playing that night, so I was pretty happy just to get in. The bouncer was polite, the bartenders were nice and actually knew how to make a good drink. Prices weren't too bad- I think $12 for a long island. The music was awesome. After about 1am the people that reserved tables are drunk and dancing on the them. This is the only club I've ever been that had a longer line for the men's room than the ladies. (There was probably a 2:1 ratio of men:women) Anyway, I had a great time and I would definitely come back. more

Incredible 7/30/2007

After reading several reviews I had to chime in. While Seablue is pricey it is worth every penny. I came for dinner in April of 2007. Every part of my meal was superb. The service was outstanding, due to the care taken to see that I enjoyed every aspect of my dining experience. The highlight of my meal was paella\r Select Seasonal Shellfish, Chorizo Sausage, Grilled Quail, Saddle of Rabbit I copied the menu page to give you a better idea of the dish. I've had paella around the world and this was by far the best I've ever tasted. more

Amazing for Groups!! 7/24/2007

My husband and I are HUGE Top Chef fans, so for our trip to Vegas we had to see if Chef Colicchio really knew what he was talking about in his sometimes harsh reviews of the contestants. Let me tell you, he has every right to point out every single little flaw because Craftsteak was absolutely flawless!! We went with 3 other couples who have never seen Top Chef and all are picky eaters and have huge appetites. First of all we were seated at a huge circular table with lots of room around it. This may seem like something so simple but it made for really easy conversations and a lot of laughs all night instead of the typical rectangular tables restaurants put groups at. Our server had a great sense of humor and almost insisted on us doing one of the chef's tasting menus. We decided on the $110 a person one which included Kobe beef since none of us had tried it yet. We were really leery that there wouldn't be nearly enough food for everyone but with the a la carte prices we trusted our server that we wouldn't be able to finish everything on the table and it was the best option for our group. We were SHOCKED at both the quality and the quantity of the food that was presented to us! The prawns in the appetizer course were the best shrimp that anyone in our group had ever had. My personal favorite for the entree course was the meat that they served in a little copper kettle that had been cooked for over 18 hours. For dessert, I would have to pick the cantaloupe gelato, I am craving it now!! Honestly, our group was filled with some of the pickiest eaters I know and they all couldn't stop raving about it!! I was so proud to have made the suggestion when two of the couples in my group said it was the best meal they had ever had. For the two of us to do the $110 tasting, 1 Kettel One dirty martini for him, and a glass of wine for me, including tax and tip it was $320 and worth every dollar!! Craftsteak is perfection without any snobby or elitist attitude. Pros: Perfect for Groups, Amazing food prepared simply Cons: Wine and cocktails were expensive but strong and large more

The pools will make you sick! 7/18/2007

You've heard all the hype about the MGM Grand. Now let me tell you what it's REALLY like to stay there. My family and I stayed there last July 13 and we will never return again. They have about 5 or 6 pools that are actually quite small for such a large hotel. The pools are always very crowded and unpleasant. We chose not to go in the pools around noon when we saw how crowded they were and also the temperature was about 110 degrees. So we planned to go out to the pools around 7 p.m. when the sun was lower and hopefully the crowds had decreased. Well, we got out there about 7 and were told that all but one small pool was "closed". They packed hundreds of people into the one pool that remained open and that one pool was scheduled to close at 7:45 p.m. So after 7:45 p.m. NO pools are open! I asked an attendant why they closed the pools so early and he said "the hotel doesn't want people spending time in the free pools when they can be spending money at the casinos and in the shows". So apparently the MGM Grand sees their guests as "cattle" to hurd toward money making activities for themselves. This is insulting considering I paid over $200 for a room there. Seeing the hundereds of people in this one small pool packed almost shoulder to shoulder I decided not to go in but my young son really wanted to swim so I let him go in the pool. When he got out he said "You know, the water tasted salty, not like chlorine". I didn't want to tell him that the reason for that was all the sweat of the thousands of people who have been in that small pool all day. It would have made him sick. It made me sick to even think about it. So there you are. That's what it means to stay at the MGM Grand hotel. That's what you get for your $200 to $300 per night. Have a great trip! more
