If I didn't have a Restaurant(dot)com certificate for this place I would've passed on going. I don't understand why people rave about it. First, they charge you $18 for a soup-siz...

The best lychee martinis in the world 11/26/2006

My girlfriends and I went to New Delhi restaurant for dinner. Before we sat down for our meal, we decided to have a cocktail in the bar area. The very friendly female bartender suggested their infused lychee martinis. They were absolutely divine, the best cocktail I have had in this city. After we sat down at our table we had to go for another round of martinis. The martinis went perfectly with the fish tikka and navrattan curry. We are definately coming back for more! more

We need a terrific place like the New Delhi Restaurant in Arizona 11/26/2006

Oh my, I would love to tell you about this great indian restaurant called the New Delhi in lovely San Francisco. My husband and I enjoyed the wonderful cuisine. To start we had samosas and fish tikka. It was absolutely delicious. For the main course we had lamb vindaloo and chicken tikka masala. Pros: everything Cons: Parking more

my 3rd time and it is best of the best 11/25/2006

This was my 3rd visit in this restaurant and things just got better and better. I sat down on the bar with my girlfriend and had their lamb vindaloo and chicken tikka masala along with a Taj Majal beer and lychee martini. It was fabulous! The service at the bar was outstanding as well as the restaurant, we were surprised that the mananger/owner (the tall dark haired handsome man) made sure that we were enjoying our food and having a good time. Overall we had a wonderful time at the New Delhi. Pros: flavor of the spices and the service Cons: nothing I can think of. more

Disappointed 7/26/2006

The ambiance is nice, but that's about it. It's overpriced and the service was poor. We ordered a set menu and had to request everything, rather than receiving volunteered service. Upon request, the waiter looked upset. Refusing to open the other half of the restaurant when there was a wait , my friends and I were urged to leave by the waiter. As we were leaving, the manager told the waiter that he did a good job. The food was underwhelming. I prefer Naan N' Curry or Star of India. Pros: ambiance Cons: everything else more

the best Indian food ever 4/2/2006

I found this place in their old location and fell in love. This is the best Indian food ever. I was devastated the day I stopped by and the place was closed. But, I found them again on a trip back to SF, the day before I left town. I contemplated going twice in one day, the food is so good. The butter chicken and the samosas (with chickpeas and sauces, yum) are better than what I had on Bricklane in London. The staff are so nice, welcomed me in when I knocked on their door after hours with a few friends to see if they were, indeed, the restaurant I loved in a new location. They remembered me, invited us in, and offered us chai. I was back the next day for lunch. I'm visiting SF again soon and eating here is at the top of my weekend itinerary. Pros: good food, friendly staff more

Best Indian food I've found around... 5/6/2005

The food is excellent! My family can't come into town without going to New Delhi to eat. They have the best chicken tikka masala I've found anywhere in SF. The garlic naan has wonderful flavor without being overpowered with the garlic. The service is a little slow, but very friendly. Pros: menu choices, atmosphere, food more

Best Indian in town! 4/18/2005

I had dinner here the other night with some friends from New York. The food was great! Probably the best Indian I""ve had in SF. The owner made it a point to come greet us, and the service was wonderful. We ordered a lot of food, but the price was still reasonable. The decor is definetly one of the best I've seen in a long time. Pros: taste, service, decor more

Waste of money 5/30/2003

Ambience doesnt make for everything. Dont bother with this place. Neither is the food great nor are the quantities served. Pros: Ambience, Some food is good Cons: Expensive, Paltry quantities more

Great Food 5/2/2003

New Delhi has been consistently a top choice for me! The food is outstanding. My favorite dishes are many of the lamb dishes because the quality of the meat is so good. The chai and rice pudding are to die for. I have taken several friends to this place and heard nothing but praise. I will continue to return regularly. I highly recommend. (It is a little pricey but worth it for the taste) Pros: Food, Location more

Very good Indian cuisine 4/30/2003

Started with Samosa and Pakoras. These were not as good as they have been on other visits, but were average. Then I had the Keema Mattar. This was excellent! One of my favorite dishes, and much better than I've had at other places. Finished it off with some Chai, which is very good here. They were out of the rice pudding, which was a bummer, because it is the best I've ever had. You have to try it! Atmosphere and service were good as always. A bit pricey, but not out of line for ingredient quality, and other restaurants in this area of town. Pros: quality ingredients,, friendly service, Cons: a bit more expensive, more

Dine like a Maharaja 4/30/2003

Best Indian restaurant by bay, in my opinion. New Delhi Restaurant never fails to amaze me with its beautiful decor, delicious food and courteous service. My favourite dishes are Chicken Tikka, Harialy Murg Tikka and Kashmiri Pulao. The restaurant really knows how to blend flavorful Indian spices to produce those delicious treats. Good job, please keep it up!! Pros: Food, Decor Cons: No valet parking more

Great Indian food in a great setting! 4/30/2003

The quality of ingredients is top notch, but it is the complex blend of Indian spices and consistently high quality preparation that really stand out. The Tandori and Curries are second top notch. I have often brought groups of friends and business associates to New Delhi, and have always been praised for my choice. It's so rare to find a restaurant that all my picky friends enjoy. They also sell their spices, so I picked some up last time. Just the aroma of the spices is amazing. I've been trying to re-create some of the dishes at home. Unfortunately I can't quite get it right, but the excellent spices help make up for my poor cooking skills :-) Pros: Excellent Food, Great Service, Comfortable Atmospher Cons: Hard to find more

Waste of money 4/8/2003

Much better Indian food up in the loin, try Chutney or Shalimar Garden. The ambience at New Delhi is nice but doesnt make up for the mediocre food and poor service. There is no $8.95 lunch buffet even though it says there is on the menu, a tourist trap close to union square. Avoid. Pros: Nice Ambience, Close to Union Cons: mediocre food, poor service, expensive more

Look at the decor, avoid the food. 7/14/2002

The dining room is attractive. It's unfortunate that the food does not match the decor. In fact, the food has nothing to recommend it. Add poor service and high prices to that and you have a bad situation. Seating is usually prompt because very few people will be there so you will have a choice of tables. Pros: The decor Cons: The food, The service, The prices more

  • In Short
An upscale choice for North Indian cuisine, this restaurant right off Union Square has a dark, wooden interior that opens past the full bar into a large, dressy dining room. The space has a vintage feel thanks to lots of old wood and exposed brick. Dishes include traditional Indian fare--curries, tandoori, rogan josh, tikka masala--and more exotic choices such as kofta shah jahani (stuffed meatballs) and murg akbari (spiced chicken with dried fruits).
