Hits all the marks every time 8/21/2008

The food is authentic and tasty, the service attentive and the decor is great. I've been here with groups twice and the space is always arranged to accommodate us. Having said that, I've also been by myself and with a friend and every time the service is great and the food is top-notch. I assume this place has an off night sometimes, but I've never seen it. Pros: Great atmosphere and food Cons: Can get crowded during dinner more

Good food there or at your place 7/29/2008

This is the first time I've tried ordering pickup from this place. The guy was very nice on the phone taking my order. Although the food maybe a bit more expensive than other places, it is VERY tasty and that makes up for it. The prompt service, hot food waiting for me when I got there and very friendly service. I highly suggest this place for take out in the Union Square area. A new place on my top 10! Pros: Fast service, great food Cons: Can get busy at dinner more

Best nan bread in town 7/21/2008

This restaurant has probably the best traditional northern Indian food around. The dishes is always hot and fresh and good every time we visit. The frozen drinks are wonderful. Everything from the tandoori section of the menu is especially good. The keebabs and masalas are always great and come in large portions big enough to share or take home leftovers. Edit: I attended a wedding catered by New Delhi last month and the quality was just as good as in the restaurant. Making really good food for 300+ people is no small feat. Nice job, New Delhi! Pros: All the food is made fresh to order and you can taste it Cons: Downtown SF parking more

Great food, but beware: 7/10/2008

I went at lunchtime during a business meeting. One other table with customers, and yet the service bordered on rude, and worse, the pricing was 2-3 times my expectation for lunch service. No lunch menus per se, and the actual bill unaccountably charged my $3 more than menu listing. This was one of the vanishinly rare time I have left a 10% tip to indicate dissatisfaction. I'm sure you can find good Indian food elsewhere. Pros: Nice spicing. Cons: Service and price more

Great find, trust the GPS! 4/22/2008

We were tourists in San Francisco and actually found this place using a GPS (it was the closest indian restuarant to where we were), so we had no idea what to expect...but the food was really great. We had ordered different bread, paneer tika and mustard gobi, all of which were superb. The place is quite spacious and elegant, we showed up around 5:30 and got seated immediately. When we were leaving the bar was full and there seemed to be a wait, so get there early. Pros: Great food adn service, close to lots of stuff Cons: Parking. Nuff said. more

The only upscale Indian place worth visiting 4/17/2008

I recently visited New Delhi Restaurant and found that the food was simply exquisite. Every dish was perfectly cooked, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. The lamb (or mutton) was soft and not gamey, cooked in a tasty sauce. The chicken was tender as well, and you could taste all the spices that went into its preparation. The vegetables were nicely done, to the point were you could actually tell what you were eating, instead of just grabbing a spoonful of mush. The rices were great as well as the samosas. Everything was simply well accomplished. The service was prompt and friendly and complemented an overall nice dining experience. Very refined. Pros: The food is all great. Hard to believe, I know. Cons: Parking, but it is downtown SF. more

Best Indian outside of NYC 4/10/2008

We just moved from NYC and were worried we were not going to find a good Indian restaurant, since we love this food so much. But after having gone to New Delhi Restaurant we feel so much better - the food was very good! We went dinner, ended up enjoying happy hour a little longer than planned, but the mango martinis were worth it and the staff was pretty understanding. How great to know we can get excellent Indian on both coasts. more

Stylish and Delicious 3/25/2008

My hubby and I went to New Delhi for our 2 year anniversary. No presents, no extravagant plans...just a nice dinner out. It was amazing and surpassed our expectations. The tandoori platter was served sizzling hot and the other dishes we had were wonderful. Also, the nan bread is served fresh and crispy - they have a tandoor oven in the back and they put it to good use. It reminded me of a place where you would expect a Bollywood star to come serenade you at any moment. Pricey, but worth it for a special occasion. Pros: Wonderful food, elegant atmosphere Cons: Downtown parking - blah! more

Great meal for any occasion 2/12/2008

My husband and I discovered New Delhi Restaurant last fall, and have dined there several times since, both for romantic occasions and for special family dinners with our school-aged children. Each time we have enjoyed gracious service, an upscale tranquil atmosphere, and delicious Indian food. The potato and pea-filled samosas are flaky, tender, and spicy, accompanied by a two chutneys. The Indian chef salad is a great twist on a classic, with tandoori chicken, lamb and paneer cheese. Favorite entrees of ours include the Chicken Korma, which is mild and studded with cashews and golden raisins, the rogan josh - a spicy lamb curry that goes great over the saffron rice and the bay soup, a golden chowder with a ton of sea food. New Delhi periodically holds special events in to benefit local non-profits - which have all been great. Bon appetit! Pros: Great Indian Food Cons: Parking more

Restaurant mentioned in several city guides that stood up to its billing 1/13/2008

We walked to this restaurant that was near our hotel that was recommended in many city guides. we had oriiginally planned to go further away but decided to try this one based on word of mouth recommendations as well as proximity. Upon being seated the menu mentioned they cater to a lot of other people in the service industry (they do this by having an early happy hour and then a later happy hour- very clever). We ordered the tandoori appetizer and the shrimp was amazing, probably my best nibble of seafood on my six day trip in Monterey and SF respectively. I would order it as an entree next time. We then ordered a couple of curries of which you can choose your heat, we asked for ours medium, perfect for me but maybe a little hot for a less adventurous palate. The food overall was delicious with that lovely fragrance of good Indian food and the staff were all very friendly and genuinely seemed to like each other. more

Elegant and Tasty 11/6/2007

New Delhi Restaurant is one of the most elegant restaurants in San Francisco! The atmosphere is very cool and the service is top notch! The Indian food is excellent and a little more exciting that your normal everyday rice-and-curry fare! It's a little pricy but the portions are a good size and the staff is excellent. I think the atmosphere and environment is worth paying for! Pros: Good food, close to lots of stuff Cons: Parking, but what do you expect downtown more

  • In Short
An upscale choice for North Indian cuisine, this restaurant right off Union Square has a dark, wooden interior that opens past the full bar into a large, dressy dining room. The space has a vintage feel thanks to lots of old wood and exposed brick. Dishes include traditional Indian fare--curries, tandoori, rogan josh, tikka masala--and more exotic choices such as kofta shah jahani (stuffed meatballs) and murg akbari (spiced chicken with dried fruits).
