Classy-Casual Perfection! 6/1/2011

Was on a pre-graduation trip with my classmates to gorgeous SF when we were in a jam when it came to a dinner reservation. The bartender at our hotel recommended Max's with a huge smile, and man...it was SO good! After a quick call, they accommodated our party of 12 with no wait. The menu is good - classic sammys, pastas, chicken, burgers, and fantastic desserts. more

Good for people-watching 2/27/2010

Upon recommendation of our bellhop man person at the Westin St. Francis, we walked over to Max's for a late-night dinner. From where we were sitting, the view out the window was of a group of fancy-shmancy hipsters waiting around for who-knows-what (a taxi? a club to open?)... the boyfriend noted that one of the females looked like Lady Gaga. Yes. THOSE kinds of hipsters. I sipped my DELICIOUS peach iced tea and just smiled in agreeance. I don't remember much of the actual dinner, except I don't think we liked it as much... crab cakes. Their crab cakes aren't the best, but they're still pretty good. I'd recommend this place if you're in the area and need a place to grub and be merry! Pros: Open late, peach iced tea, Irish accent-waitress Cons: I forgot to order pie more

Decent Food............ 10/23/2007

My boyfriend and I had breakfast here while visiting the fantastic city of SF. Portions were beyond huge, and service was average. Had no real complaints until I was totally stuffed and waiting for my guy to finish eating, so I was looking around taking the place in, when on the wall behind my boyfriend I saw a ""pest"" of the six legged variety just crawling around like it was his regular routine! Felt kinda ill after that! I know all restuarants have some ""pest"", but when they are sharing a table with you, its just not right! Pros: Huge portions at a decent price Cons: unwanted dining partners more

This place get's it right EVERY TIME! 4/5/2007

One of my favorite places to dine. The staff is always friendly and helpful, the food always generous and tasty. Stay away when the pre-theater crowds are eating, as it will be noisy and rushed. Any other time is fabulous. In the tradition of an East Coast diner, they have a very extensive menu (lot's of sandwiches), and fantastic calorie laden desserts. Prices are very reasonable. Max's is a must if you like good, basic food and consistent great service. Pros: Food, Service, Value Cons: Very busy, chaotic for the ""before"" the theater crowd. more

Eh 3/13/2006

Overpriced and the food ranged from bad to just ""ok"". Do not order the lasagna--it only comes with one layer of noodles and cheese with thin sauce in between. We also had an order of the brisket at the table but it was nothing out of the ordinary. The brocolli was so hard you could knock out the waiter! The dessert was nothing out of the ordinary. I had high hopes but this restaurant is overrated! Pros: nothing Cons: overpriced, lots of homeless in neighborhood, below average food more

Recommended Indead! 7/25/2005

We came at a busy time, had to wait, expected to. But food and service was excellent, I would recommend anytime. Pros: Good food Cons: crowded more

Great Sandwiches, Deli off of Union Square 7/1/2005

I've visited twice so far: once when my father visited, and again when both my parents were out for a visit. Max's has a huge selection of sandwiches which, having been to many a NY deli, are just as good as its east-coast counterparts. The sandwiches are big: not enough for two, but more than enough for one. The pastrami and corned-beef is excellent, very lean and tender. The menu has many options besides sandwiches, but I haven't tried anything else...yet. Deserts look very temping but are very large and by the time I'm done with a sandwich I never have room left! Service is always fast and friendly. Recommend for a great sandwich and meal off the touristy Powell/Union Square scene. Pros: Great Sandwiches, Good Service more

.....WHY? 3/17/2005

Weve ordered from max's for three years. In three years of twice per month ordering I have NEVER had my order actually served corectly. Very frustrating. Poor ""deli"" food. Definetly a west coast deli, and if that is what you are looking for than you found the right place! more

Excellent choice 6/15/2004

We ate there twice. We enjoyed the food both times. The first time they weren't as busy as the 2nd. Luckily we just wanted to order ""take-out"" the last time. It was before the theater and people were being turned away. This was recommended to us by our conceirge and it was an outstanding suggestion. If you are looking for just 'normal food' and nothing fancy this is the place to go. It is a block from Union Square. Pros: Good food, Carrot Cake more

Don't Waste your Time! 1/13/2003

Each and EVERY time we get our food late! EVEN THE SOUP! Take note that their motto is ""Critics are NOT welcome""Geez! I wonder why! It's bad enough that I finish my soda and my soup isn't even there. I almost walked out on them, and even when I spoke to the manager, he didn't really seem to care. Food was good however, but with the POOR service, ambience, and rudeness, I wouldn't waste my time going to this restaurant! There are TONS out in the city well worth my money than this place! Pros: Food OK Cons: Poor Service, Rude more

*shrug* Nothing to write home about 12/5/2002

The food is good and the portions are HUGE, but these guys are a big chain and I have never gotten a very indigenous feel from them. They aren't local and I just get the idea that they are more concerned with their appearance than actually providing a good experience. more

Yum in excess! 11/20/2002

Outstanding food in abundance--great for sharing. Can be noisy when crowded--and frequently is. Great place to be sung 'Happy Birthday' to by the waitstaff. Pros: Great Food!, Lotsa Food!, Singing waitstaff Cons: CROWDED more

Childbirth and corned beef!! 11/9/2002

It's a traditon for me that whenever I have a baby, someone runs out and brings a Max's Ruben to my hospital bedside! I think my childrens' celluar make-up is mostly Max's Ruben since I consumed an unnatural number of them during pregnancy as well. While they didn't do much for my figure, these sandwiches were as comforting as they get. Pros: intense flavors, great portions Cons: loud, inconsistent service more

Best West Coast Deli 10/24/2002

If you are into sandwiches or dinner-sized salads, this place can't be beat! When I have one of those yens for corned beef, pastrami, real turkey or a Reuben sandwich, only Max's will do. And Max's Opera Cafe is perfect befoer the Symphony, Opera or Ballet. Excellent large salads, and they are amenable to substitutions -- a plus for many of us with allergies. They also have great drinks, excellent service. Any one of the Max's can be counted on for a great salad or sandwich. Their lunch specials are really good too. Desserts too - my favorite is the chocalate covered macaroon, but I bet you can't eat it all at once. Pros: large portions, good value, good, friendly servic more

Extra Everything Please! 10/4/2002

Meals at Max's are served in excess, so be prepared to bring a doggie bag home for Fido. Food is generally good and filling. Cons: Generally greasy food more
