Classic Italian Food- Phenomenal Meal Snobby Inflexible Service 11/14/2008

Unusual neighborhood location for this high end classic italian cuisine. Amazing white truffles in season, outstanding hand made pastas, meats, cheese cart for dessert. Mouth watering food at competitive prices more

best italian gourmet food in town, possibly in California,no jeans. 3/6/2007

A friend of mine knowing that I moved here only few years ago from Italy recommended to try Acquarello for a special occasion. I went there with my husband on my birthday. Pros: italian gourmet food, ambiance, service Cons: parking, expensive wine list more

great food, wine and service 6/21/2006

When I first walked into the restaurant, I wasn't very impressed with the decor, but after I had their tasting menu with wine pairing, I thought the food, wine and service was amazing. This is not a hip place to meet people, but if you like to enjoy food and wine, and have a nice dinner, this is definitely the place. Pros: food, wine, service Cons: decor more

TIRED! 10/27/2005

Went to Aquarello with high expetations. Nothing was terribly wrong with the place, but the whole thing just felt tired - like it's past it's prime. The food was good, but uninspired. The decor of a restaurant does not usually make a difference to me, but the decor at Aquarello was pretty ugly. The place felt like it was meant for old people and it seemed that way too as most of the guests were definately over 50. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but this is definately a place to take your grandparents when they're in town - not somewhere you would go with a big group or for a romantic dinner. The one impressive thing is the 700+ bottle wine list, which is mostly italian, but impressive nonetheless. For this kind of money you are much better off at boulevard, myth or any number of places. Pros: huge wine list Cons: boring food, ugly decor, lame atmosphere more

Great dining experience! 8/11/2005

Had dinner recently, enjoyed the chef tasting menu with paired wines, we thought it was very good value as well. Understated elegance, great service and excellent wine list. We will return. Pros: Tasting Menu more

Tired and funky 8/5/2005

This place is just tired. It's in a run-down part of town and is shopworn. Put it out of its misery and shot the place. The food is just not that good and unless you're an old Lady with a lot of money you won;t like it. Pros: nice wine list Cons: over priced wine more

Simply Stunning 8/22/2004

While this place might be a bit too ""old-world"" to younger diners, the food and the service were simply first rate. A true gem in the city. Perhaps people who have been to Europe will appreciate this place a lot better. You have to try the ridged pasta with melted foie butter, black truffle, and the amazing Marsala reduction - it's pure heaven. And probably one of the BEST Italian wine list I have ever seen in this country. Overall the place gives you an elegantly rustic Michelin star deserving feeling. Pros: Excellent food, Great service team, Stellar Italian wines more

fabulous evening 6/26/2004

We highly reccomend this fine restrauant. Everything was great-service, food, presentaion. We will go back if we visit San Francisco again. John and Debbie from Waco, Texas more

Very good but lacking Italian soul 3/5/2004

The food at Acquerello reminds me of restaurants in Italy that look towards France for inspiration such as Osteria Saddler. While the food is very good, it is overly worked and too elaborate in presentation. The wine list however is stunning. All things considered it is a fantastic place to celebrate a special occasion. more

A Lovely Evening 1/21/2004

I took my husband here for his 30th birthday. We had never been to such an upscale restaurant and we were a bot nervous. The waistaff were so nice and gracious to us! They even moved us to a table where we could sit next to each other and hold hands. They recommended a lovely wine for us, and made a special dessert for my husband when they found out it was his birthday. The food was delicious, and the service was unrushed, so we could sit and savor every bite. We recommended this place to my parents for my mom's birthday and they loved it too! Pros: Amazing food, Great wine list, Friendly service more

Best Italian 6/29/2003

I have been going to Acquerello for several years. The restaurant has evolved and has been consistently excellent. Not your typical fare but more refined and sophisticated dining similar to one or two stars Michelin Italian restaurant. Contrary to the many comments I believe the tasting menu' with paired wines is a very good deal (four courses and four wines poured liberally) In addition this is one of the best wine list in town with proper service and glassware. Keep it up! more

The absolute best. 11/5/2002

Over the ten years I've lived here, Acquerello has easily become my favorite restaurant, to the point that I now visit about once a month. The five course tasting menu, with perfectly matched wines, is the way to go. Choosing from the menu, which changes with the seasons, is equally rewarding... a first visit should include the pasta with foie gras, a dish sent from heaven. The service is gracious, timely and non-intrusive. In all my visits, I honestly can't think of one thing that ever displeased me. (** Best of all, even when the place is full, the acoustics allow for normal conversation without shouting. That alone is worth a few points in my book.) Pros: Food, Extensive Wine List, Intimate more

Pretentious. 9/29/2002

This was stiff and pretentious. Uncomfortable and overdone. Food was good, but atmosphere was ridiculous. Restaurant was virtually empty, but still wasn't private because of the bull pen where the tables don't offer individual privacy. Maitre'd was pretentious. Servers were warm enough, although it all felt fragile and like you are eating at your overly critical in-laws with their irreplaceable fine china. Pros: Elegant setting Cons: Stiff, overdone, cloying, pretentious more

Loved it 7/23/2002

All the food my group had was cooked perfectly and tasted wonderful. No mistakes from the kitchen or the waitstaff and the wine makes the meal even more pleasurable. more

Blissful 6/3/2002

Finally, SF offers a real dining experience, service impeccable, food delicious, wine outstanding. This place is truly wonderful! THANK GOD a place that knows how to space out courses, i will go back for this reason alone. So tired of restaurants trying to move you through. Americans who don't get that? Get with it! Not everyone wants to rush home for TV. Pros: Food, Wine, Service Cons: a little bright more
