Best

Was visiting from New York, and this place was great for lunch! Outstanding service all around. Host was very nice and attentive to the note on my reservation about being seated ...

Worst

One can't deny the quality of ingredients, or that the menu is pretty interesting at the White Dog. However the prices are out of whack with a) the food, b) the level of service ...

Quiet and Quality 4/17/2006

This bar always seemed expensive to me when I lived in Philadelphia, but since going out in New York a lot, it doesn't seem so bad. The drinks are more expensive than other places in Philadelhia, by tthe place is very clean and quit, with polite patrons and a charming staff. When some friends and I showed up late on a Saturday night, they opened up the dining room so that we could all have a table together instead of crowding around the bar. The drinks are named on canine themes, in keeping with the name of the cafe. The food, as little as I've had there, is also terrific. more

organic 4/12/2006

i like that they use a lot of locally grown organic products. i support that. and the food was good, but since i don't eat fish, my only option was an omlette. their menu changes frequently, but on the two occasions i've been there, nearly everything was seafood based. i don't want a crab-burger, i want a burger! the restaurant itself is pretty tight...you have to squeeze betweent ables to get to the bathroom or to the exit. more

A little piece of quiet in the not so big big city 4/5/2006

After spending five years in the city of brotherly love I have come up with my favorite restaurant. When visiting Philadelphia look no further than the White Dog Café. This quaint yet elegant café on the south edge on the U.Penn campus is the perfect place to sip a glass a wine or have a full course meal. The White Dog blends classical cooking with edgy city living. It’s a must eat for anyone passing by. more

Excellent place to visit 2/28/2006

I love dining outside at this place. It's absolutely beautful. Another reason why this place is great, the food is organic and most of the ingrediants come from local produce places. This cafe takes you back to the simple days when things weren't all huffy puffy. You go and sit back and relax, and its just overall and great experience. more

The White Dog 2/28/2006

The White Dog cafe is fantastic. They have indoor and outdoor areas and great food - it's been nationally recognized. They give preference to organic and locally grown ingredients, which is awesome. The place inside is a bit cramped when it's crowded but everyone in there is friendly and considerate so it's not as bad as other places. I had lunch with Ralph Nader here. Both he and it are awesome. You should come here too. more

Excellent West Philadelphia Dining 12/10/2005

Great dining in University City / West Philadelphia! The White Dog is a favorite for students from Penn and Drexel as well as faculty and locals. The crew here puts together an excellent menu that is pretty affordable considering their committment to using mostly locally farm grown ingredients in their dishes. They also have a very nice bar with a good beer selection. I would reccommend visiting their pitcher special from 10p-12a where pitchers are 8-10 dollars, which is a great deal considering some of the high quality brews they serve. The White Dog is a great choice when you are looking for a casual evening out with friends! more

A Simple Restaurant but Unique Nonetheless... 8/10/2005

The menu changes on a regular basis and offers something for everyone. They always carry one or two vegetarian options and pride themselves on using local grown ingredients. They always carry one or two poultry, meat and fish dishes as well. The key to white dog is their combination and how they accentuate so simple as chicken. The flavors are to die for. They have a bar area (with a simpler menu) and a sit-down dinner area. They also have private rooms for parties as large as twenty. They are pricey however, with their entrees costing between 12 and 20 dollars a piece. However, don't let the price stop you from having dessert: their classic creme brulee with a pup vanilla cookie is not to be missed or skipped. They have a fine wine list and the ambience is great. The whole restaurant is nestled in an old brownstone building. Be prepared to make reservations (especially during Parents and Alumni weekends) as this is a local "fancy restaurant" favorite. Still, if you are in the area and looking for a quaint eating experience, White Dog is certainly your choice. Also look to White Dog for their Fourth of July and block parties. For a set price, you get a buffet-like menu and usually dancing. They even close off the entire block for these types of parties! more
