I consider myself a sushi connoisseur--I travel frequently for work and have tried varied sushi establishments in many cities. I was excited to try Tsunami but had a dissapointin...

WAY OVER PRICED AND WE LEFT HUNGRY......................... 10/9/2007

We went on a weeknight so it was not crowded. I have never been to a restrauant where there isnt any type of place mat. The food was way over priced. The rolls were not rolled tight so everything fell apart the minute you put it in soy sauce. Portion size not worth the money. Taste was good, I have never been to a sushi bar where there wasnt a least one japanese chef working. Did not meet expectations... If you want real quality sushi go to Sushi Express on 7th east and 7800s. They have great quality fish and very reasonable prices............HOLE IN THE WALL BUT WE LOVE IT.. YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED :) Pros: Taste Fine Cons: To small of portions for the money more

Why bother? 4/5/2007

For a great sushi restaurant you need great sushi period. Then comes the ambiance, service, etc. and Tsunami didn't impress me at all on all of those accounts and I don't see wasting my time and money here when the Happy Sumo is so close by and has the best sushi I've ever had. Then I would go with Takashi. And if they weren't around I'd go to my local supermarket and make my own. Don't bother. Cons: Sushi more

Best sushi in Utah hands down! Super fresh fish, skillful preparation, great service! Kid Friendly! 4/3/2007

After trying quite a number of other Sushi restaurants throughout Salt Lake and Utah counties, we have settled on only 1 restaurant (2 locations) where we will actually go for Sushi. We are done with the airheaded waitresses at Happy Sumo, and the careless preparation and non-fresh fish there. We have never had a bad experience at Tsunami ever, and we have been dozens of times now. We go at least 3-4 times a month, and never miss an opportunity to bring a new friend or give a glowing recommendation on Tsunami.\r \r We have a 2 year old and a 5 month old. Our friends who often accompany us also have young kids. The staff have been nothing but accomadating and welcoming to us and our kids every time. If we go in a big enough party on the weekends to the Ft Union location, we even get sat upstairs which is nice since the kids can get up and wander around and play without bugging other customers.\r \r Salem is a great manager. Hillary and Jillian are great servers. We've had countless other good servers, they just don't stick out in my mind as well as these two.\r \r Our favorites include: surf & turf roll (not always listed on menu), green goblin (ditto), sunshine roll, shrimp tempura roll with soy paper (less expensive alternative to sunsine), aloha roll with the jalapeno and mango, crunchy tuna roll, tokyo cowboy, fire breathing dragon roll, montauk roll, and at the very top of our list is the escolar nigiri. I will usually get 4-8 pieces of this nigiri each time I go, so good!!!\r \r The valet parking at the Ft Union location is nice as good spots are hard to come by. Tsunami not only takes but encourages reservations, in stark contrast to places like Happy Sumo where we have had to wait upwards of 90 minutes or be told by an ignorant waitress 2+ hours before close that they won't be able to help us at all. My only complaint about Tsunami is that there isn't a location in Utah county, although their 2006 expansion to Ft Union is definitely a step in the right direction. Pros: Upscale contemporary decor, fresh fish, lots of variety in the menu, talented preparation, great service, take reservations Cons: none! more

Excellent and creative rolls, Super fresh, Great staff, Would def go back 3/23/2007

I went to Tsunami in Midvale with a bunch of my friends last week. I was really impressed by the clean and beautiful interior. It is such a pleasure to see that the moment we step into the restaurant, we are greeted with smiling and friendly faces. From the hostess to the server, everyone was so welcoming and had such a positive attitude. We had a great server who took her time to explain the menu to us in a very entertaining way and at the same time made us feel very relaxed and happy. We ordered a number of things including the Miso Marinated Black Cod, which was so fresh and delicious that it seemed like they just caught it right before they cooked it. We ordered the Seared Ahi salad to share along with other small plates like the fried spring rolls, both tasted excellent. The fried spring rolls didn?t seem very Japanese and more like Vietnamese or Thai?regardless they were some of the best fried spring rolls I?ve ever had. Next we ordered a bunch of sashimi. The yellow tail was firm and fresh. Yummy. We also ordered a lot of rolls like Montauk, TNT, Tokyo Cowboy, Sunshine and Aloha. They were all fabulous and I would highly recommend any of those! What I really liked about their rolls versus other places I?ve tried is the freshness and flavor; the rolls here are so much more creative than other places. Our total evening was great and we really enjoyed ourselves very much. The staff is attentive and the food is among the best. Our food bill was pretty pricey but then again we did order a bunch of food. We would definitely go back. Pros: Clean, Nice Decor, Great Food & Staff, Fresh Fish more

Server cheated us on our gift card 2/25/2007

The food and atmosphere were excellent, but when it came time to pay our server cheated us on our gift card. Said there was less money on it than there actually was. So he either pocketed the money or whoever sold it to our friend pocketed the money. Either way it kind of ruined us on the place. It's unfortunate because they do have some tasty sushi.\r \r Cons: Service!!! more

Awkward Customer Service 1/20/2007

Tsunami used to be one of my favourite spots to dine at. However, my last visit wasn't so impressive. I made a reservation for 9. I had arrived 10 minutes early to wait for our name to be called. I had to go up to them and ASK because the time of our reservation had passed! Friday is busy but HONESTLY, that's why I called in a RESERVATION! \r \r And our waitress! Jamie! - we were all talkative, joked around - we joked around with her a bit; she had absolutely no sense of humour. She didn't even act like she wanted to be there. I wasn't impressed with her attitude. \r \r Still more...The bill ended up being around $180 for all of us. There is a courtesy tip for $26.00 or something around that in the high 20's (since we were a party of 6+). With all the confusion as we were all paying for ourselves we ended up being $10 short. We told her, we added the remaining we owed TOWARDS THE FOOD onto the tip line. She gathered everything up to make the charges. She came back, ""You owe $10 more still..."" she didn't make eye contact either! So my friend handed her a credit card to charge the $10 on. After a while we thought about it, What do we owe her? We already paid the difference and the tip! So one of the girls politely went over to ask her and the Jamie got really defensive stating that we put it on the tip so that money went towards her tip. She could have told us that when we told her what we had done! She said she couldn't credit us back and the only way to correct the charge was the cross out the tip. If we hadn't have asked she would have jipped us $10 on top of the $26.00 tip that we had already given her. Very underhanded!\r \r There are a few really nice waiters and waitresses but there are just a few there who make you feel unwelcome or like you're putting then out of their way. It's super slow on busy nights, which is fine. I realize that all of these inconveniences have viable reasons, but annoyances are annoyances. Enough is enough - but I'll be dining elsewhere. Pros: Very awesome atmosphere... Cons: Lack of staff morale... more

Horrendously Slow Service - Gave Up! 1/14/2007

The food may be great or it may be mediocre, but I will never know. My husband and I went to Tsunami almost two hours before a movie we were planning to see was scheduled to begin. When the host asked if a table was okay with us, we expressed a preference for another table that was beside the window. We then waited nearly 20 minutes for a waitress to greet us. When our waitress finally did come to take our order, she was very accomodating and comped us an edamame appetizer. Her friendliness and accomodation made us willing to look past what had been an error on the part of the host. My husband and I ordered the tempura vegetables (good but ridiculously small portion for the price -- there is little expense involved in tempura vegetables, and small does not always equate with chic) and a sake sampler. We ordered three sushi rolls for our main course. Our drinks were slow to be delivered, but I thought the vegetables were timely. However, after waiting an hour and twenty minutes from the time we were first sat at our table for our sushi, my husband and I realized that we would not have time to enjoy our pricey meal if we were to make the showtime for the movie we were planning to see. We left $7 for the price of the sake sampler, took our coats and left. I have *never* walked out of a restaurant before; we are generally eager to see the best in a waitress/restaurant. However, there is no redeeming such ridiculously slow service. Pros: Nice Atmosphere Cons: Slow Service, Small Portions more

Great sushi, try the apple/pear saki, but make sure you know the hours 12/27/2006

I have been to the Tsunami in Midvale a few times and have loved it every time. I have always had prompt and personable service. The sushi is really good too. Well, about as good as you can get in Utah anyway. :) Very fresh and good combos. I usually have a hard time deciding what to get and have never had an objection if I ask to change the rolls a little to suit my tastes. My only ""complaint"" is I don't like how they close between 2 and 6. (I showed up at 5 once....) So be sure you know their hours before going. I also had my first taste of a Saki I actually liked when I requested the Apple/Pear saki the last time we went. It was sweet and soft. Oh and the last time I went, there were two kids who were well behaved (and were only moderately loud on occasion) and were not causing any problems. :) Pros: food, service, sushi Cons: hours more

Kids Not Welcome!!! 9/6/2006

One little peep out of the kids will get you a visit from the hostess- Our recent visit to the new Tsunami Restaurant off Union Park resulted in a vow to never go back. I was not impressed with the sushi, small slivers of fish topped their sushi rolls, and the taste was mediocre at best. Most appalling however was the way their hostess handled a complaint by a guest about our child making noise. ""What can she do to get my child to be more quiet"" is a clear sign that they want to provide you with the check and send you on your way. Dont get me wrong, I fully understand that people go to dinner to enjoy the ambiance as much as the food, but kids or no kids we all should be able to enjoy our sushi. This restaurant is in a strip mall with highchairs available for children giving no indication that they prefer you to leave the kids at home. But make no mistake about it, kids are not welcome! Pros: Ambience different Cons: Rude, sushi was mediocre at best more

Not So Great Sushi 8/28/2006

I took my bo to Tsunami last night for the first time and was told it was really good, but after trying it for myself, I came to a different conclusion. The food was very much mediocre (my least favorite compared to anywhere else I have ever had sushi!) and very small portions for the price. I suppose the price is a little higher than most, but that is by just looking at the menu. Once you receive your small portions of food, it makes it that much more expensive for the money. You can pay less at Ahh Sushi, Happy Sumo, Ginza...any of the regulars, and pay a little less, and get much larger portions. (As an example, if you order the tempura vegie plate at Ahh Sushi, it is huge, and is around $7. We ordered the same appetizer last night at Tsunami, w/i $1 of the price at Ahh, but there were 6 pieces of tempura vegies on the tiny plate. It is a mound of food at Ahh Sushi.)\r \r I was also told it was really nice inside, and romantic, but it was also just mediocre. It felt more like a lunch spot, casual dining, than something really nice, and/or romantic.\r \r It is an ok place, but not really worth it unless you just happen to be close and not near another sushi restaurant. Pros: Somewhere new to try Cons: Overpriced for the small portions, bland, nothing impressive more

Positively GREAT Sushi! 8/10/2006

We found this place through a friend, thankfully! It's by far the best sushi in SLC, in my opinion. We drive from another county to eat there. Always great service, prompt seating and fabulously fresh fish. Do yourself a favor and order at least two Sunshine Rolls! Pros: Everything...food, service, ambience Cons: Maybe parking, but only a problem on weekends more

Bad Attitude 7/24/2006

Why do hostesses at restaurants seat people where THEY want - rather than where the customer wants? We went and the place was almost empty - yet - the hostess sat us next to the only other table in the restaurant, a group of noisy teenagers. We asked to be moved and she said she couldn't. Huh?\r \r Food was okay but pretty pricey. Miso soup wasn't hot enough. We spent the whole night listening to the teenagers...not fun. The manager didn't seem to care that we weren't happy so I guess she won't care if we don't come back. Pros: Decent sushi Cons: Hostess & Manager Don't Care more

I highly recommend it! 6/25/2006

Well at first I was a little skeptical about eating here, mostly because I went with friends who arent very fond of eating sushi, or have never eaten sushi at all. The place was busy but surprisingly the four of us were seated at the sushi bar; it was a Friday night too. The chef was nice enough to point us to a few of the popular rolls after I explained to him that my friends werent sushi connoisseurs. One friend who once threw up the first time I took him to eat sushi seemed to eat and enjoy everything we had that night, whether it was raw or cooked. I think the freshness of the fish probably made a huge difference in why he liked it this time as opposed to his first time. My other friends werent as bold and ordered the ribs or chicken teriyaki, which were both fabulous, especially the ribs (I highly recommend it). It always nice to go to Japanese restaurants and have options for non-sushi eaters and avid sushi eaters like myself. Most Japanese restaurants Ive been to offer either really good sushi but no non-sushi items or okay sushi and okay non-sushi items. This restaurant seemed to offer the best of both worlds, pleasing the palates of both types of people. Ill definitely eat here again the next time Im in Utah. Pros: Good Rolls, Fresh Fish, Excellent Ribs more

Tsunami - A trip back to Japan 6/1/2006

Tsunami provides a very traditional atmosphere with the wall-to-wall decorations and authentic environment. Although the sushi was just average for me, it is still very satisfying for a hungry stomach. Pros: Nice atmosphere, Good parking Cons: Dull service more

Authentic Sushi with Spectacular Service 5/30/2006

Never have I had such great sushi anywhere! With the added bonus of friendly chefs, Drew, Kirk, and Stan, coupled with exceptional service, the atmosphere couldn't be better! I plan to make this a regular stop when in Salt Lake City and will highly recommend that my friends and cohorts do the same. Even the sushi novice will feel right at home. Pros: Food, Service, Price Cons: limited parking more

Excellent food, great service! 4/19/2006

I rearry enjoyed my stay at the Salt Lake City Tsunami Restaurant. irecomended this restaurant to everyone my friends. Terashima-san arigatou! Pros: Food, Service, Sushi Cons: nothing more

Not worth your time or money 4/16/2006

Being a sushi aficionado, I've given this restaurant several chances to prove its worth. However, the service was slow on every visit and more than once I was seated in a drafty spot by the front door. While the sushi was mostly alright, the memory of being served a couple of less than fresh pieces on one occasion still lingers and will deter me from any future visits. I recommend Takashi, Kyoto or the Happy Sumo instead. more

Excellent Sushi 4/10/2006

The sushi at Tsunami is awesome. It is up there with Ichiban Sushi and the service has always been great. Friendly staff. Cons: small restaurant more

surprisingly called sushi 2/18/2006

I went to Tsunami during my ski trip with low expectations being from California, which has abundantly authentic sushi bars. The rice was not seasoned to the Japanese standard. fishes were shipped from CA. I was clueless as to their claim a fusion restaurant, which were tempura-dip fried rolls, BBQ ribs, Vietnamese springrolls. I will call it international food, but diffinitely not fusion. Bring in a real fusion chef. But their location, next to a threater, has helped the restaurant. Not recommended to Californians, real sushi eaters. Pros: Locations, Locations, Locations Cons: food, food, food more

Excellent food and fair priced lunchs 2/17/2006

The teriyaki steak and dumplings or the mixed tempura plates are both excellent, along with the sushi. A little pricey, but worth it. Pros: quality, location Cons: a little pricey more
