great selection of records but... 4/13/2010

the two stars are for the records because honestly they usually have a pretty nice selection of stuff quality stuff. at least they used to before i decided i could no longer support that store. the customer service is horrendous. this is coming from somebody who believes that the customer is wrong more often than not. mark has his good days but can sometimes be pretty snide. also, don't go in when he is on the phone or you will be waiting a loooong time. the irony is that they have a no cell phone sign in the window. dan is admittedly pretty cool and friendly. there's one girl who works there (or used to) every once in a while who very rudely refused to put on a record that i wanted to hear. there was a used record that i was interested in hearing and asked her if i could hear it quick in the time between when she was switching her records. she acted very offended and told me ""no, we don't do that here."" i've worked at multiple record stores where that's been standard practice and i'm more than happy to put something on for somebody. i could go on and on with my bad experiences and horror stories that i've heard....in short, this place has good records and i know i'm missing out on some finds but i just can't bring myself to spend my money there and support this store. they also do charge fees for tickets now (as do most places...just updating the other review) and watch out for the huge laundry list of ludicrous rules behind the counter. Pros: tons of new and used vinyl, unique stuff Cons: rude staff more

One of the Best Nation-wide 3/10/2009

I tour the US a bit and I shop many record stores across the country. Treehouse is among the best there is. They really have it all: New and used vinyl - cd - dvd - 45s. Secondly, the selection is fairly priced. Thirdly, they know the music; past, present and in some cases future. Treehouse is a great resource for this town and something I am proud to have here. more

Great guys who know their stuff. Tickets to local venues, without Ticketbastard fees! 10/15/2008

I am not the typical record shop customer. Generally I walk in, browse a little, pick stuff up as if I'm going to buy it, but end up putting it back on the shelf. Okay, so that might actually be typical.\r \r I am not really the typical Treehouse customer. I usually go in to get tickets to local shows, talk baseball with Dan and pretend to know more about music than what's in my collection. \r \r I will say that I have gotten albums at Treehouse that I know I couldn't have gotten anywhere else, including The Black Crowes' latest on picture disc...something I'm guessing people weren't beating down the door for. From the time I've spent in the shop I can tell you that Mark and Dan (along with everyone else on the Treehouse staff) really know music. \r \r And if they don't have what you need, I know they'll do their best to get it for you. Pros: Great selection, great staff. Cons: No liquor license? more

Best service in Minneapolis 11/16/2006

Honestly, this store is the best in Minneapolis. They stock stuff that no other record store in the area has. Their 50 cent bargin bin is superb for finding lots of old records and they have an amazing selection of new records, especially if you're into experimental music (this place stocks lots of great experimental vinyl and CDs, many of them extremely rare). They also have a great selection of new 45s. They may not have a lot in quantity, but for what they lack in that they make up for in quality. Also, the staff is really nice and they've held a great place in the Minneapolis music scene for many years. So, if you're into buying vinyl, CDs, or would rather get the true experience of buying music (instead of sitting on your computer and downloading MP3 files) Treehouse is definitely the place. Support this place before the cold and virtual world destroys all of the cultual and physical artifacts surrounding music that make this city so great. Pros: !!! more

Best record store in the Twin Cities! 6/12/2006

This cozy dump has everything I love about old-fashioned record stores: a knowledgable staff, a steady flow of interesting new and used music, and plenty of VINYL--served straight up with minimal fanfare and heartfelt convictions. They also pay more than other places in town for used records and CDs---just bring them your sister's old Supertramp records and the like. The owner, Mark Trehus, has been around the local music scene forever. He isn't at the store as often as he used to be (I heard he has some serious health issues), but he knows more about records than practically anybody I've ever met, and he certainly isn't afraid to let his opinions be known--about music, politics, or just about anything. The manager, Dan Cody, is up on all the latest indie-rock releases, and he looks like he probably has some opinions about his favorite restaurants to boot. There are other people working there part-time, notably Clint Simonson (of avant garde cult label Destijl Records) and Terry Katzman (of Garage D'Or & Oar Folk fame), making this place THE hipster record outlet in Minneapolis. The Fetus and Cheapo may have bigger selections, but this joint has just about everything you need without having to wade through a bunch of crap in order to get at it (if they don't have it, they'll order it!). Support 'em now, before they go away like Let It Be and the Root Cellar. more

Beware music fans 8/30/2005

Treehouse Records is the best source for vinyl in Minneapolis. The first time I went in there several years ago for vinyl, I spent $150. Treehouse is good for everything, new or old, used or imported it's seriously a danger zone for music heads. The owner is very laid-back and friendly. Don't go too early though; he likes to sleep in and opens late on occasion. Pros: Vinyl heaven, great selection, free street parking more
