Worst

The drinks were good, but not fantastic - basically, definitely not worth $11-$12 a drink (or $9 for a beer...!!!???). Music is usually pretty good, but a tad too loud. And, ...

the good and bad 8/9/2008

I love the interior of the redwood room, I love the drinks at the redwood room. I hate the fools that hang out there. My advice, go with some friends for happy hour and be out by 7pm. Pros: ambiance Cons: crowd more

Good to be posh! 5/14/2008

My hairstylist and a few friends recommended drinks before dinner at this bar. POSH is all I have to say. Drinks were made promptly and tasted great. Call girls were available and plenty of Sugar-daddies hovering over us! more

Cliche' 12/4/2007

Cheesy, Cheesy, Cheesy....This place is so OLD news. Everytime I go, it's filled with posers, and ladies of the night! Really, it has turned into a tourist trap. The only way a girl can get a guy to buy her a drink is if she is HOT enough to flag down the bartender so HE and his buddys don't have to wait like the rest of the scrubs. SKIP IT, unless of course your over 40, or lookin to find some trim for pay. Pros: The lighting and cool pictures on the wall.... Cons: The croud more

Great time 9/10/2007

My friend and I were supposed to start out at the Redwood Room and end up at a club. We never made it to the club. We got there early and snagged seats at the bar. This worked out very well because as the bar started to get crowded we offered to get the bartenders attention and order drinks for those who were waiting. Everyone was so appreciative they offered to buy our next rounds. Drinks are pretty pricey but we got all our drinks free. Even though a lot of the crowd was older we met some really cool people. I would never go there to meet a 20 something guy but if you are not afraid to hang out with a more distinguished crowd try it out. more

Super Fabulous 6/21/2007

I have been going to the Redroom while on business trips to SF for the past 6 years, and still like it. This place is always full of businessmen and some really good eye candy, not to mention the music. On my last trip, I even scored almost $250 worth of martinis in a week. Nice place to be if you are a tall southern blonde who has mastered the art of flirting:) Pros: Atmosphere, drinks Cons: price more

HEDONISM 9/30/2006

OK! so I decided to visit again after a couple of years away and the venerable Redwood Room is making a serious comeback! I walked around the room with my drink in hand while my buddies stayed at the bar and met a group of the hottest girls I've seen in a while in the city. Everyone looked great and the crowd was totally engaging. Being able to walk into a bar and meet people shows that everyone is comfortable... this place is getting back to how it was right after Shrager opened it in 2001. The drinks on the menu are tasty and the bartender made a great old-fashioned, the DJ had the crowd flowing and the staff was totally cool. Make sure if you want a table to go to the podium at the front and let the Maitre D' take care of your group. When I decided I wanted to sit with those girls I met, I was seated right between Kiefer Sutherland's group, who I found out was in town for a doc film he just made, and John Mayer, who's playing with Lance Armstrong's old girl Sheryl Crow... this place is still the GOLD standard!! Pros: PEOPLE CROWD ATMOSPHERE MUSIC Cons: no real drawbacks more

Fantastic Updated Art Deco Bar 9/13/2006

My experience at the Redwood Room tonight was phenomenal! The bartenders were quick and friendly and the drinks were unique. The Lavender Lemondrop and the Berry Martini were amazing - these two drinks are must haves if you visit the Redwood Room. The staff was attentive - I was told the story about the creepy people on the wall being involved in a twisted love triangle. This is a spot to check out - great atmosphere, service and drinks! I'll be back! Pros: Updated Art Deco Bar, Service, Atmosphere Cons: Valet Parking is $$$ more

Good if You're a Prude 9/13/2006

We went by the Clift for an unexpectedly brief stay last Saturday night. We were less than halfway through our drinks when hotel security came by to say that due to the behavior we had been exhibiting we had "two minutes to finish our drinks" and then they would return to make sure we were gone. There was no previous warning of any kind. I'm not sure what they thought they saw but I am sure it's nothing you would not see in most any hot San Francisco bar on a Saturday night. To add insult to annoyance, security then followed us to the restrooms and told us to "make it quick". My advice to the hotel is to fire the security team and get one that has some manners and has spent some time in San Francisco. My advice to possible patrons is to go there only if you are (1) looking for a place to take your mother, or (2) not planning on anything beyond holding hands. more

Wow - Great Bar!! 9/12/2006

Went to the Redwood Room last Saturday. I hadn't been there in a few years, and to my surprise it hasn't lost the cool, hip vibe. The music was great, featured cocktails and food were amazing and the service was impeccable. The service was warm and friendly. The changing artwork on the walls is really cool!! I will be coming back again very soon!! Pros: Cocktails, Vibe, Service Cons: Crowded, Difficult Street Parking more

pretty but..... 8/27/2006

This place is gorgeous, but you can tell it used to be a hot spot and is trying to hang on. The crowd wasn't too impressive and the service was hohum. Still love the decor although it could use a little elbow grease to get back to the top notch look it used to have. Pros: pretty decor Cons: getting old more

lost its luster 12/12/2005

i loved this place when it first opened. it can still be a pretty good place to go on weekdays, but fridays and saturdays are all about the bridge-and-tunnel crowd. Pros: location, drinks, service Cons: crowd more

What a letdown! 8/3/2005

What a letdown! On my first trip there, I couldn't believe how bad the service was! Horrible drinks when added with an equally horrible wait staff but a damper on the night. We waited over two hours for a table as several of the booths sat empty the entire time. The next time I pay $12.00 for a drink, it better have some liquor in it. Cons: Overpriced, Too Crowded more

I am in my early 20s and I felt that the 1/16/2005

crowd was just dandy. Everyone and every drink was beautifully made and just divine to take in. Service was excellent and did not snub my friends and I for being young compared to the rest. Also mingled with some very nice people. Everyone was just friendly and the decor was fabulous. Watch those paintings or are they watching you? Pros: well made drinks, atmosphere, friendly crowd more

okay 11/28/2004

I agree that the crowd is on the older side, typically mid to late thirties. The room itself isn't particularly big, but it has a nice, swanky-looking interior with seating along the walls. However, most people are forced to stand as they awkwardly or drunkenly hover with their drinks. The lychee-tini is WAY too sugary, although it is good for a few sips before you keel over from the sweetness. And the bar does get crowded early on the weekends, although I noticed that it was also crowded on the weekdays. There appears to be no advantage to being a hotel guest beyond the convenience of walking downstairs for a few drinks. Pros: design more

Swanky and Trendy...very classy 10/9/2004

I love this place. It's definitely somewhere to go if you want a chance to see some famous faces. A great place to be seen. It gets really crowded on Friday and Saturday nights--hard to find a place to sit unless you make a reservation and the bar is usually packed. But the atmosphere makes it worth it. Pros: Trendy, Ambiance, Unique Drinks!! Cons: , Pricey, Snooty Bartenders more

Nice change! 8/18/2004

I have been a regular fan of Ian Schrager's bars for a long time - but the Redwood Room remains one of my favorites. The service is quick and friendly, the music has improved a lot and yes - they still get quite a few celebrities (contrary to someone else's post). Last night I saw the Wilson's (Owen & Luke) and a few weeks ago Nic Cage! The real secret though is the side lounge - you can usually score a table and the service is much quicker. Rumor has it that this is where Sean Penn hangs on occasion. Pros: upscale, music, special cocktails more

So sad... 7/25/2004

This place is filled with yahoos and wanna be's. There is nothing local or celeb about it. It's a shame because the interior is fabulous and the drinks, food and service are fab too! It feels like a frat party - not the elegant, sophistcated place that it should. Pros: food, drinks, service Cons: , Horiffic crowd more

WAY TOO CROWDED 3/25/2004

Unless you like to be bumped around and have drinks spilled on you by frat boys and old men in suits stay away. The Redwood Room used to be the sexiest destination in the city - now its just trying to be like all the other clubs. The music is too loud and you can't move on the weekends. They pack the place with too many people and you are constantly being bumped from one place to the next. This place WAS romantic. Its not anymore. Cons: , too loud more

too crowded. 12/15/2003

fun bar. everyone is pretending to be someone they are not. it is fun though. always meet nice people. some of the bartenders can be not so nice...have fun waiting for a drink more

wow 12/6/2003

Chichi, really posh. Drinks are a bit pricey, but strong. The crowd- well dressed and beautiful. Loved the "moving" art work! Buy a drink and stay for the atmosphere. At least check it out, just so you can say you've been there! Don't forget to make a trip to the restrooms so you can look at the rest decor in the hotel. Pros: atmosphere/ scene, beautiful people, strong drinks Cons: price more

Editorial
  • The Scene
Ian Schrager, the man behind New York City's '70s glam-club Studio 54, is responsible for putting the shine on this swanky destination. Amid soaring ceilings and polished redwood walls, businessmen scope well-heeled eye candy and vie for busy bartenders' attention. Amorphous wall art appears on a handful of plasma-screen TVs and designer couches line the perimeter, resting atop tiger-striped carpet.

    The Draw
The Clift is a popular place to stay for visiting pop stars, so locals come here to be part of a scene, with hopes of spotting someone famous. The room's centerpiece is a tall, back-lit shelf that highlights the bar's quality liquors, many of which are used in the signature martini drinks, like the delicious Lychee-tini. DJs spin music (Wednesday-Saturday), but this is not a dance club.
