Parthenon - saganaki and more 3/19/2006

The Parthenon is one of the legendary Greek restaurants in Greektown. It may be a bit touristy, but order the saganaki and watch the theatrical presentation as the waiter sets it ablaze. A good way to sample different Greek foods is to order the combo, with lamb, moussaka, and pastitcio. The interior has some attractive murals and may get you in the mood for a trip to Greece. more

MY BIG FAT GREEK TUMMY 3/8/2006

Nothing on their menu is bad. Everything is chalk full of flavor, mostly that of salt and lemon, to be honest. Their atmosphere is typical and normal, even down to the wall paper. I really like their wait staff, they've always been really accommodating. There's nothing too special about this place except that its got a comfortable feel. Their meals are basic and they serve large portions. I've really enjoyed their coffee and desserts, and always wind up eating too much when I go there.Try a gyros platter, its much different than your greasy spoon gyros. Their Greek potatoes are also pretty good. Very salty and very lemony. But sometimes I crave that. more

Great Greek Restaurant 12/29/2005

This place has been in Greek town forever. It has classic Greek food at very reasonable prices. Dinner entries are in the $8-15 range. The menu goes on forever. I love lamb and that is what I usually order when I go here. They know how to make right. It is great; with rice is most delicious. They also do great sea food; red snapper, calamari, etc. You can be sure someone is going to be ordering flaming saganaki if you don't yourself, so you get to shout "Opa!" I remember the last time I was in here there was a table of college age boys next to us. They order the lamb's head, hoping no doubt to gross folks out. It worked. Such fun. http://www.theparthenon.com/ more

Good Greek food 9/5/2005

I recently attended a large dinner party at the Parehenon. We choose the banquet option so we had courses and courses of food for a very reasonable $18 each. The saganaki and lamb were especially memorable. The portions are huge so we couldn't finish it all. The restaurant was loud and festive. Good food, but not the best in Greektown. more

Greek food 8/25/2005

Here the owners make several claims: 1) Their restaurant is the oldest in the neighborhood. 2) They invented flaming saganaki in 1968, and it has since been exported to Greece, and 3) Parthenon was the place that brought gyros to Chicago. What we know for sure: There are more than 140 dishes offered, including sea bass, red snapper, calamari, moussaka and vegetarian preparations. Portions are huge. You can even order a whole roasted suckling pig (feeds 12; call ahead) and lamb's head. The floors in the cocktail lounge feature green Greek marble; the dining room seats 300 and can accommodate private parties. more
