Meiji (mA´jE), a new sushi restaurant named after the Japanese Meiji Period (1867-1912), has opened in the former d. kelly location. Currents owners have glammed up the space with a new granite and Brazilian steelwood semi-circular bar, a centerpiece sushi bar where you can chat up the sushi chefs, and dramatic steelwood installations above both the sushi bar and in the lounge area. The menu features premium nigiri and sashimi -- some selections are marinated in-house, like the amaebi (sweet shrimp) and saba (mackerel). The Makimono list includes standbys like the California and spider, plus signature maki rolls like the koto, with unagi, cilantro, avocado, jalapeno, masago and tempura crunch. Sapporo-style tempura, here made with wild Japanese mountain vegetables instead of ho-hum produce is an appetizer standout (executive chef Ishi spent 15 years cooking in Sapporo, Japan). Entree highlights include teriyaki salmon and tempura udon.

Don't be alarmed if when approaching the front door of Follia, a new Italian restaurant in the heart of the Fulton Market District, you see stylishly dressed mannequins peering back at you. You're in the right place -- the restaurant displays art and fashions by local college students, that you can purchase, or admire while you wait for a table.
The menu changes frequently, but recent antipasti offerings included favorites like caprese salad, plus more unusual options such as salmon and spinach quiche. Half a dozen thin-crust pizzas -- including a quattro formaggio (gorgonzola, Taleggio, mozzarella, and Parmigiano-Reggiano) -- are baked in a wood-burning oven. Several pastas, including a risotto of the day, are available, as well as entrees like veal scaloppine with porcini mushrooms and New York strip steak with fresh rosemary. Desserts are made in-house and generally include at least one chocolate treat.

Centrally located in the Leo Burnett building, ad execs and industry big wigs nosh on a menu that features 35 daily seafood specials, such as pan seared Chilean sea bass, blackened swordfish, pan seared tuna and, when in season, soft shell crabs. Can't decide? All selections can be viewed from a display case near the open kitchen. Land lovers will enjoy the selection of steaks, stir fry and chicken. Sauces generally are Asian-inspired. Live jazz emanates from a grand piano in the comfortable lounge, and the bar remains open 1 hour past the dining room for those seeking a post-dinner respite.

don't know why this place isn't always packed! I think it's excellent... from the seafood to the drinks to the service. Granted it's not a Tru or Trotter's but it's one of the best restaurants in it's category. The Crabcakes, Almond-crusted Trout and blueberry martinis are fantastic!
The Bluepoint Oyster Bar is closed. Owners are planning a new concept for the space (details are still under wraps). Check back for additional updates.

The wine bar and restaurant by the folks behind Blackbird intends to keep things simple. The pared down seasonal menu includes sharable choices like the chorizo-stuffed medjool dates with smoked bacon and piquillo pepper-tomato sauce, and the focaccia with taleggio cheese, fresh herbs and truffle oil. Avec also has a cheese cave, with a collection of artisan cheeses from Spain, Italy, France and Portugal. The cedar-lined dining room is as rustic as the menu. At the helm is Koren Grieveson, who spent five years as sous chef under Paul Kahan at Blackbird.

A rich mahogany wood interior, spacious bar and elegant Italian marble floors give this restaurant a sleek, contemporary appeal. Its seasonal outdoor deck overlooking the Chicago River offers diners one of the best outdoor views of the city's bridges and skyscrapers. It's in a hustling, bustling part of downtown but makes a nice retreat from it. Right across the street from the Civic Opera House, the place does a strong pre-performance business.

Opera, yet another offering from the KDK Group, (Red Light, Marche, Gioco) has opened in the rapidly gentrifying Wabash and Roosevelt area. In typical KDK style, Opera has lots of eye appeal. Unusual light fixtures, exotic silk drapes, a technicolor glass enclosed wine cellar, customized quilted chair backs, rich wall treatments and Asian screens make for a visual feast. Mini private "vaults" provide romantic tables for two or four (the rooms actually used to be movie reel storage vaults in the former warehouse), and the rest of the wide-open room provides lots of people watching opportunities.

Atwood Cafe serves all-American comfort foods and cafe cuisine prepared in a traditional style. Specialties include a pot pie with a flaky buttermilk crust and a maple-glazed grilled pork chop. Pre-theater diners will enjoy the cafe's proximity to the Shubert Theatre, Cadillac Palace and Oriental Theatre.Have gone here twice in the last couple of months, once for lunch and once for dinner, and we have reservations again in the next few weeks. The staff is professional, attentive and aware of time committments. Both times we ate there we had theater tickets and the waitstaff made sure we made it to the show on time! Imaginative menu, delicious food and cool

The Fairmont Hotel has unveiled its version of the "hip hotel" dining experience with Aria and Aria Bar. A separate entrance lets non-guests forget that they are actually dining in a hotel. The globally influenced restaurant has an Asian feel, with granite and black colors offset with depictions of Tibetan deities, exotic orchids and plush furnishings. A floor-to-ceiling wine cabinet (complete with librarian ladder), an open kitchen with a tandoor oven and spit, a dramatic chef's table, and a glass-enclosed private dining room provide plenty of distractions for diners.
The seasonal dinner menu offers more than 15 appetizers, including foie gras, mushroom ragout and sauteed sweetbreads. Hong Kong barbecue duck and lobster chow mein, spit-roasted rack and leg of lamb, and swordfish osso buco style are a few of the entree selections. Bone-in, char-grilled steaks, including a rib-eye and New York strip are among the house specialties. Lunch options include such entrees as Malaysian clay pot chicken, tandoori salmon salad and garlic and chili prawn pad Thai. Breakfast features interesting takes on crepes, hash and omelets, as well as the standard breakfast fare.

Before there was a term for it, Caffe Baci had already perfected the "Fast Casual" concept of dining. For over 12 years, Caffe Baci has been serving upscale coffee, paninis, salads, soups, and hot entrees in Chicago's Loop without the wait that would accompany comparable food in a sit-down restaurant. Executive Chef Jimmy Hamili offers up the best in Italian cooking from his native Rome and has been turning out new specials and old standbys, like the JoJo panini (mozzarella, artichokes, basil, prosciutto, tomatoes and herbs) almost since the beginning of Baci's reign. The bright yet minimalist setting acts like a serene refuge from the office both at lunchtime and after work when dinner entrees are hot and inviting.
