The new design of Soldier Field always stirs debate, and sometimes that is a good thing. While the neoclassical colonnade of the old stadium was retained, a funky modern stadium design was plopped onto the site to create an architectural equivalent of a shotgun marriage. The modern facilities are actually quite nice, and the new stadium would look cool if it stood on its own two feet. As it now stands, the design is an architectural compromise.

Wright College is a community college at Narragansett and Montrose. Its campus is actually a relatively progressive design for a junior college. It was designed by the architecture firm Bertrand Goldberg & Associates, more famous for the design of the great Marina City complex. The four classroom and facilities buildings, are connected to a central hub. The largest structure looks like a squashed pyramid.

The Darkroom is a cool club in Ukrainian Village on Chicago Avenue. Its name is a play on words in relation to photography, some of which is displayed on the walls. When the club cranks up the music and the dance floor gets jumping, it gets very difficult to see the photos in the dark room, so just go with the flow and enjoy the variety of world music played here. The crowd is very diverse, which is a good thing.

McCormick Place is a massive convention center by the lakefront. It is perfect for large events like the annual Chicago Auto Show. It is a shame that it is so isolated from downtown, as a network of shuttle buses are always used to move conventioneers to and from their downtown hotels. The Hyatt McCormick is the only hotel next to McCormick Place.

It used to be a rather slick place to see a film, but the facilities now seem a bit dim and is staffed with some people who don’t really care if you are having a good time at the movies or not.

Vic Theatre is hanging on as an old movie theater and concert venue in Lakeview. It is a charming facility, but the interiors are showing signs of wear and tear. The balcony seating is good for concerts if you want to avoid the potential mosh pit of the main floor. The Brew & View is a cool concept where they show two or three movies and sell beer and pizza to create a very informal atmosphere akin to a giant den at a frathouse.

It is not the cleanest or loveliest of movie theaters, but it somehow has a bit of character that is completely missing from the sterile multi-screen suburban complexes. They have four screens and show a decent selection of films.
